DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S WIFE’S APPEAL

Lion Ann Stafford

Once again to everyone,I’m really getting excited about District Convention in Belvoir Castle. It’s going to very different and there should be something for every Lion totake back to their clubs. And what a great venue! The MS Society haveprovided lots of goodies which will be on a stand at Convention. Please have a look at what’s available... There’ll be items to purchase and take away with you but if you needfurther items or help with something you’re organising everything you need should be available via Caroline Kew... [email protected]

It was great to see Lion Lucia Green (left) on Facebook looking so fab with her MS collecting tin in the local supermarket... Thanks for that effort Lucia. I’m a great fan of the Message in a Wallet (MIAW) project. This is, of course, in addition to the Message in a Bottle (which stays in the fridge). MIAW enables a Message to be carried on the person. I know there have been lots of comments made that emergency services do not look in wallets. However, I recently heard great the great news that Derbyshire Constabulary are now actively supporting this project. Emergency services will try to find out who they are dealing with – and please remember it’s the message that supplied in a clear plastic – it is not designed solely for a Man’s Wallet - it can be easily carried in a purse or hadbag. Please do consider supporting MIAW – I’ve told many with MS about this and they consider it to be a great idea.

My thanks to you all for your continuing support for MS.

Lions Club supplies - DID YOU KNOW?If you need to obtain supplies from theLions Clubs International catalogueyou could make a big saving ifyou place your order via ourMD Headquarters team. It’s recommended that Lionswishing to purchase goodsmake their selection from theLCI web site and thene mail their order to MDHQ.Items will be added to MDHQ’s weeklyorder to LCI enabling big savings on postage.

NB: some Clubs have paid as much as $17 postage on a $2 purchase... so it does make good sense to use this helpful service

Our Bright Ideas feature has had a regular spotin Update E since July 2015. Now we eagerlyawait the decision of DG Paul on which of theseideas has been selected as a prizewinner .District Governor Lion Paul will be presentingthe prize at District Convention on 12 March atBelvoir Castle...

All of us receive mail from organisations who print their logo and other slogans onto their envelopes. This is a great and inexpensive way of keeping an organisation’s identity in the ... So why don’t we do the same? Setting up a template to print envelopes is an easy matter and once done you can quickly print them off complete with Lions logo, the name of your Club and whatever additional information you choose... For example a web address or a slogan such as

can be included. Far too often we overlook the vitally important need to present our organisation and our own Club in a a slick professional manner. Adopting this idea is one way that we can all improve how we promote Lions Clubs to others... to those who support our work and those who may one day wish to volunteer their services to a smart and well run organisation.

This Month’s idea came from Update E’s Editor and so will not be considered for the prize beingpresented... The contenders for the District Governor’s award are again shown below...

can be forgiven for thinking that inducting new members is like waiting for theproverbial bus - you wait for ages then three turn up all at once.Helping the club to go from strength to strength the three new Lions, Janice Cook, Sue Crew andCarol Tinkler, were all welcomed into the Club’s community and now as a District it’s great that

can be used to endorse that welcome.Pictured above at the Induction Ceremony are: Lion President Mark Langley, 1st VP Lion Ros Webber Jones (Sponsor) ,New members Sue Crew, Janice Cook and Carol Tinkler and finally Lion Tamer - Bob Booth(Sponsor)

Lions of Zone H recently attended aMeeting held at The Ear Foundationbuilding in Lenton, Nottingham. Thevenue was chosen as Lions were tomake a substantial donation to assistwith the work of the organisation.Lions were welcomed by FoundationCEO Sue Archbold PhD, her husbandBrian and Fundraising Coordinator JoCollinson.Sue Archbold gave an inspiring insightinto their work and the development ofthe Foundation since conception in 1989.The Ear Foundation brought cochlearimplants for children to the UK andnow provides services to bridge a gapbetween clinics (where devices are fitted) and communities wherethey’re in everyday use.

Zone H Lions aid to hearing...

The newly opened Ear Foundation building is equipped with the most up to date equipment and theirvision is for deaf children and adults to have the opportunity to hear, communicate and develop spokenlanguage through utilisation of the latest technological interventions. The visitors were given a tour of the centre and were able to see the new facilities including their SoundSpace - Hearing Technologies Room. They were enthralled with some of the most amazing and stateof the art technologies now available to those who use the services there.A cheque for £5,000 was handed over to by 1st VDG Lion Balvinder Sokhi on behalf of Zone H Clubs...Nottingham West, Radcliffe on Trent, Vale of Belvoir and Notts/Derbys Hemlockstone. The donationwhich also included a contribution made by Coningsby and Tattersall Lions, will be used to help in theenhancement of adult resources at the centre. If you would like more information about the Ear Foundation go to: http://www.earfoundation.org.uk/

NOW is the time for us to plan how we will celebrate this great year!

2017 - 100 years of service

LCIF’s history is filled with high-impact projects, meaningful partnerships and the kindness and effortsof Lions. With continued support the aim of LCIF is to continue to expand its programmes, far intothe future, to enable improvements in lives of countless people around the world. In addition to helping many local projects with matching grants the LCIF record of achievements isa truly amazing catalogue of huge success. Here are just a few key ponts...

1972 First grant of $5,000 awarded for flooding in South Dakota1973 Melvin Jones Fellowship created1984 LCIF partners Quest International to implement youth development programme1985 First major catastrophe grant of $50,000 given for earthquake relief in Mexico1989 Sight First programme begins and goes on to prevent serious vision loss of more than 30 million people1999 Partnership agreed with The Carter Centre to combat River Blindness and Trachoma in Latin America and Africa

2001 Start of partnership with Special Olympics to provide vision screenings to athletes through the Opening Eyes programme

2002 LCIF joins with Johnson & Johnson Vision Care to develop and manage Sight for Kids and provide vision screenings and eye health education for children in Asia. 2004 Lions mobilize more than $15 million for South Asian Tsunami Relief, at this point the single largest disaster reconstruction project in LCIF history

2005 Lions raise $5 million for relief work following Hurricane Katrina2007 LCIF named World’s Number One Non Governmental Organisation by independent Financial Times study2010 Support given to UNICEF to continue School in a Box programme2012 $10 million raised for vaccinations through the One Shot, One Life: Lions Measles Initiative as part of a challenge from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.2015 LCIF and partners celebrate the donation of 500 millionth dose of azithromycin, an antibiotic used to fight trachoma

It’s also worth mentioning thatLCIF regularly contributes toprojects instigated by MD105 Clubsand also respond generously todisaster funds and projects that arebeing carried out within the UK.Currently the following grants arebeing considered:105BS Day Therapy Unit £24.2K105E Air Ambulance Ventilator £13.1K105 Lifeskills Adolescence Resource £52.8K

That’s a massive amount of aid for the UK andanother indicator that LCIF is a successful partof this great organisation in which we shouldall rightly feel proud to be involved.

Lions... quick to lend a helping hand at the heart of some of the World’s worst disasters

THE ZONE CHAIRS’ COLUMN

Lion Wally Goldspink is a member of Boston Lions Club and has served as a Lionwith that club for almost 38 years. He was for some time the Boston Leo ClubAdvisor and he has served as Lion President on two occasions. His current positionas Zone Chair is the first District Cabinet role he has undertaken.Lion Wally believes that one of the keys to successful Lions activity is all aboutgetting out and meeting your public.... Here is his round up of Zone ‘C’ activity...Welcome Fellow Lions to I’m callingI’ve really got to kick off this short article by saying -If you’ve not yet registered there’s a last opportunity to do so and come along (if only for the businesssession on Saturday March 12th). Its your chance to meet Cabinet Officers, have your say and agood day out. The format now is far better than in the past so... come along and see for yourself! When I’m asked what we are doing in Zone ‘C’ I have to answer, ‘most of what we get involved inis similar to what we’ve done in the past’ but, we are always looking for new ideas. Like many othersI do feel that if what you’ve always done successfully continues to bring funds to your charity account, then why change it? Do it and enjoy it! Enjoyment should be the key factor in all we do.The strength of any club is in its membership and the ability that each member has to contribute.Having a membership of 25+ is, admittedly, a bonus (if all are attending meetings regularly andcontributing to the clubs well being). Zone ‘C’ is fortunate and benefits enormously from having strongclubs with some long standing experienced members.Having said that it’s with sadness that I have to report the closure of , a Club with 23 yearsof service. On a brighter note are looking to a brighter future, hopefully withnew members enrolling to support the sterling work being undertaken by Lion Margaret Erentraut.

ZC Lion Wally Goldspink

Their efforts have enabled them to buy three defibrillators within the Louth area. Our for this fiscal year is to help provide mobile chemotherapy treatment units for “TheHope for Tomorrow” organisation. You may have read about this in last month’s edition of .Clubs have been amazingly generous in their support and so far £5,500 has been donated withhopefully a little more still to come. So, there we are... I hope that this short resume of our activities in Zone C will have been interestingand informative for you all. You can be certain that in this Zone there is a great deal of resolve anddetermination which ensures that the Lions Clubs International is well represented and very successfulin living up to our ‘ ’ claim.
