Following the game today, the Dodgers will fly to Denver and begin a three-game series with the Rockies tomorrow afternoon in the Coors Field lid-lifter. On Monday, the Dodgers continue their six-game road trip in Chicago, with the first of three games against the defending World Champions, including the Wrigley Field home opener. The Dodgers went 11-8 against the Padres last season and have not lost the season series to San Diego since going 8- 10 in 2010. Since the start of the 2011 campaign, Los Angeles is 74-41 (.643) against the Padres, including a 39- 20 (.661) mark at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers won their first day game on Monday and this afternoon will look to stay perfect when the sun’s out. Last year, Los Angeles was 28-16 (.636) in day games, compiling the best winning percentage in the Majors. GET WELL SOON: The Dodgers would like to wish best wishes and a speedy recovery to former All-Star Pedro Guerrero, who is recovering from a stroke in a New York City hospital. Guerrero, 60, was a five-time All-Star during his career, which went from 1978 to 1992 and he played in Los Angeles from 1978-88. Guerrero was the 1981 World Series Tri-MVP, along with fellow Dodger greats Ron Cey and Steve Yeager. BMAC IS BACK: Veteran right-hander Brandon McCarthy will make his first start of the season this afternoon against the Padres, after going 2-3 with a 4.95 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) for the Dodgers in 2016. McCarthy, who began the 2016 season on the disabled list following April 20, 2015 Tommy John surgery, returned on July 3 and went 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA (4 ER/22.1 IP) in four starts, before being placed back on the DL on Aug. 14-Sept. 25 with right hip stiffness. McCarthy went 1-2 with a 5.63 ERA (10 ER/16.0 IP) and 11 strikeouts in five Spring Training starts. He last pitched on Saturday in the Freeway Series, allowing three runs in 3.0 innings and striking out four. BOBBING AND WEAVING: The Dodgers look to close out the series by facing a familiar foe today as Padres’ starter Jered Weaver has logged 11 career starts against Los Angeles (6-3, 2.66 ERA), including six at Dodger Stadium (1.98 ERA). Logan Forsythe, Joc Pederson and Corey Seager have all homered off Weaver, while Forsythe (.313--5-for-16), Adrián González (.3084-for-13) and Chase Utley (4-for-10) have enjoyed some modest success against the Southern California native. THE CLOSER: Last year, Dodger closer Kenley Jansen became just the third NL pitcher all-time (since saves became an official statistic in 1969) to record at least 45 saves and 100 strikeouts in the same season: NL, Pitchers: 45+ Saves & 100+ Strikeouts in Season All-Time Season Pitcher, Team Saves Strikeouts 2002 Eric Gagné, LAD 52 114 2003 Eric Gagné, LAD^ 55 137 2004 Eric Gagné, LAD 45 114 2011 Craig Kimbrel, Atl 46 127 2016 Kenley Jansen, LAD^^ 47 104 ^ Won NL Cy Young Award ^^ Won Trevor Hoffman NL Reliever of the Year Award SOURCE: STATS, LLC MEN IN THE ‘PEN: Last night the Dodger bullpen fired 4.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and one walk. Kenley Jansen (1.0), Alex Wood (2.0) and Sergio Romo (1.0) all made their 2017 debuts in stellar fashion, contributing to the 3-1 victory. In three games this season, the bullpen has posted a 1.80 ERA (2 ER/10.0 IP) while striking out eight against just one walk. In 2016, the Dodger bullpen combined to set a franchise record with 590.2 innings pitched and 607 total appearances, both of which led the Majors. Despite the high-inning count, the bullpen excelled and was one of the best units in baseball, ranking among the MLB leaders in ERA (3.35, 2nd), opponents’ batting average (.221, 2nd), strikeouts (633, 1st) and WHIP (1.16, 2nd). A LOOK BACK: The Dodgers posted a 91-71 record in 2016, en route to their fourth consecutive division title and a trip to the NLCS, their fourth appearance in the LCS in the last nine years since 2008. It marked the first time in franchise history that the Dodgers reached postseason play in four straight seasons, and they became the first club in NL West history to win the division four years in a row. Los Angeles won 90+ games for the fourth consecutive season, a feat that had only previously been accomplished once in team history, 1951-56 (6). THE ROSTER: Two Dodgers are due congratulations for making their first active Opening Day rosters, as Grant Dayton and Andrew Toles took part in their very first Opening Day on Monday. Of the 25 active players who appear on the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster, 17 were also members of the club’s 2016 NLCS roster against the Cubs. Sunday, the Dodgers placed five players on the 10-day DL, retroactive to March 30 (Pedro Báez, Andre Ethier, Scott Kazmir, Josh Ravin and Brock Stewart), who join Yimi Garcia (60-day DL) in comprising the club’s six-man DL. Of the 25 players on the Dodger roster, nine countries are represented (Cuba, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Puerto Rico, USA and Venezuela). THE DOC IS IN: Dodger skipper Dave Roberts is at the beginning of his second season as the Dodger manager, following a 2016 campaign in which he was named National League Manager of the Year for his work in guiding Los Angeles to its’ fourth-consecutive NL West Division title, despite having 28 different players spend time on the disabled list. That was the most for any team in the last 30 years since at least 1987. Roberts became just the second rookie manger ever to lead Los Angeles to a Division title, joining Tommy Lasorda (1977). He also joins Lasorda (1983, ’88) as the only Dodger skippers to ever win the Manager of the Year Award since its inception in 1983. The rest of the Dodger coaching staff remains intact from last season: pitching coach Rick Honeycutt (12 th season); bench coach Bob Geren (2 nd season); hitting coach Turner Ward (2 nd season); first base coach George Lombard (2 nd season); third base coach Chris Woodward (2 nd season); bullpen coach Josh Bard (2 nd season); assistant hitting coach Tim Hyers (2 nd season); quality assurance coach Juan Castro (2 nd season); and catching instructor Steve Yeager (6 th season).
