their ‘Head 2 Heart’ weekend. The weekend saw students from disadvantaged backgrounds spend some time away from home at the College, enjoying many different activities. A significant number of our students and staff were involved in participation and organisation of the event and I take this opportunity to thank them for their support of what is an extremely important programme in the lives of these young people. Sympathy On behalf of the St Virgil’s College community I would like to extend our sympathy to Fr Brian Nichol’s upon the passing of his mother. Fr Brian has been a wonderful supporter of our Junior and Senior Schools over a number of years. His mother was given a fitting send off at the Cathedral on Monday. College Athletics Carnival Next Friday, August 28 is the annual House Athletics Carnival at the Domain Athletics Centre. This event is particularly significant as it is one of the few opportunities where both campuses get together as a College for a major event. Details of the day, specific to students at each campus, are included in other sections of ‘The Star’. I ask that parents and students check these details as required. Parents are more than welcome to come for any or all of the day to watch the activities unfold. Old Virgilian Data 2017 marks the centenary of the Old Virgilians Association, which was founded founded in 1917, just six years after the founding of the College. The Old Virgilians Association have organised many events to take place during 2017 to mark the centenary. To make these events a success the organisers need accurate contact details for all old boys of the College. Within our community there are many parents, grandparents, uncles and close family friends who are Old Boys of St Virgil’s. It would be greatly appreciated that when you are visiting the school during the next few months that you take the time to check with the office staff to ensure that your details or the details of family members are still correct. Alternatively you may wish to email Mrs Monica Nugent ([email protected]) with the following details: Name: Final Year at St Virgil’s (eg: Grade 12, 1982) Address Mobile Phone Number Email Thank you for your assistance with this important task. Father’s Day Breakfast – Junior School A reminder to all dads at the Patrick Street site that the annual Father’s Day Breakfast will take place on Friday September 4 at 7.30am. The Junior School Parents & Friends Association organises the event and if you are interested in helping out in any way we ask that you please contact the Patrick Street office or Mrs Simone Ashby at [email protected] This year the event will see the drawing of the Parents & Friends thermomix raffle. A reminder if you have not purchased a ticket in this raffle, please email Mrs Susan Roberts at [email protected]. ‘The Best of Croon’ The Parents and Friends Association are pleased to present the amazing ‘Croons’ at the JPC on Wednesday September 23 at 7.30 pm. Following on from a sold out Theatre Royal season of “Return of the Swing”, Andrew Colrain (Old Virgilian and current parent), Colin Dean and John X present an amazing show with Matthew Ives and his Big Band and the Croonette

“Family is the key term for the school as they don't believe they can bring about this significant change without the support of parents and the broader community”. Greetings from New Zealand!

I have had the good fortune this week to attend the National Edmund Rice Education Australia Deputy Principal's Conference being conducted in Christchurch, New Zealand. The conference is being hosted by St Thomas of Canterbury College, an EREA Associate School. St Thomas has a very interesting story to tell of hosting another school on their site at the time of the devastating earthquakes. A number of schools were destroyed and for the period of their re-build were hosted on site by another school, so two schools on the one site. So as to accommodate the hosted school St Thomas had to radically change the way they operated, in particular they significantly shortened their school day. They have since continued with the shorter day model because they found that their data clearly showed that for some reason their academic outcomes improved significantly after moving to a shorter day. Perhaps we won't mention this to our boys!

Touchstones of the EREA Charter

Liberating Education We open hearts and minds, through quality teaching and learning experiences, so that through critical reflection and engagement each person is hope-filled and free to build a better world for all.

Gospel Spirituality We invite all people into the story of Jesus and strive to make his message of compassion, justice and peace a living

reality within our community.

Inclusive Community Our community is accepting and welcoming, fostering right relationships and committed to the common good.

Justice and Solidarity We are committed to justice and peace for all, grounded in a spirituality of action and reflection that calls us to stand in solidarity with those who are marginalised and the Earth itself.

St Thomas are leaders in Indigenous education and emphasised the importance of these cultures being embedded in all that they do, particularly the curriculum. All students celebrate the Maori and Islander cultures of their "family". Family is the key term for the school as they don't believe they can bring about this significant change without the support of parents and the broader community. There is much all of our schools can learn about inclusiveness from the experience of St Thomas. I look forward to the remainder of the conference as it focuses on 21st century spirituality and particularly Catholic education in the 21st century. Absentees Parents are respectfully reminded to please advise the Office as soon as possible if their son is absent for the day. Our rolls are a legal requirement and provide essential data about the whereabouts of your son, particularly in the advent of an emergency evacuation or lockdown. Please use the College website or phone the Office to notify your son’s absence as soon as possible on each day he is absent from school. Thank you for your support with this important matter.

September 1st has been called by Pope Francis as a Day of Prayer for the Planet. It needs a lot of prayer! I was thinking how this might be done and decided that it had to be out of doors, preferably at night, gazing into the heavens. So I have volunteered to run a Prayer Service along these lines at St Therese’s parish Moonah. Their Parish Council thought it was a good idea. I hope we can work something up at school as well. There may be some vague expectation that we can get to another planet if we have to, so it’s worth looking at some science. The nearest sun to ours is Alpha Centaurus, the bright pointer to the Southern Cross, furthest from the Cross. (To digress into Astronomy, it is a binary star and maybe a three star system, but to keep this simple….) It is about 4.22 light years away. A Space Shuttle at 23.300kph would take 165 000 years! We need to look after the planet we have! Many politicians and commercial power groups seem to be hell bent on continuing to damage it for various reasons. May we pray:

Gracious God, your amazing love extends through time and space, to all parts of your creation, which you created and called good. Your covenant with the human

family is remembered in every rainbow in the sky, symbolizing your promise of love and blessing to every living creature, and to all successive generations. In Jesus, you invite us to enter into a new covenant, in communion with all who

seek to be faithful to you and to do justice. As people of faith, we are called into covenant. Your covenant of faithfulness and love extends to the whole creation. Today we pray for the healing of our planet that present and future generations

may enjoy the fruits of creation, and continue to glorify and praise you. I have learnt many things over my life, most coming from my mistakes. I have learnt that: “Being close to creation is to be close to the Creator, and that is a healing place.” For me that is the sea, for others it maybe mountains, forests or….. Go plant a tree!

Justice and Solidarity We are committed to justice and peace for all, grounded in a spirituality of action and reflection that calls us to stand in solidarity with those who are marginalised and the Earth itself. Edmund Rice Education Australia Touchstone A challenge for all of our boys now and into the future is to stand in solidarity with those who are ‘blessed’ in the eyes of our God – the peacemakers, the merciful, those who thirst for justice, as well as the poor, the powerless, the excluded, the marginalised, the humble and the suffering. Often, in the business of our day we forget to look for those who are blessed in God’s eyes and needing of our support, encouragement and time. It is always heartening to see many of our boys genuinely looking out for each other. Often, there is an endless stream of boys helping another boy who might have been injured whilst on the playground. Or, there is always the small gesture of congratulations, a high five, a pat on the back or just a smile, when another boys is acknowledged for an achievement – and not just from those in his class. In some ways this is relatively easy as we have a level of awareness of those we spend our days with. The challenge for our boys now and into the future is to look for the ‘blessed’ that will cross their daily paths in the days and years to come.

Assembly – Grade 4 On Friday, August 21, Grade 4 will lead our assembly which will commence at 9:00am in the Hall. All parents and friends are invited to attend. (apologies for the incorrect date in last week’s Newsletter). Art Exhibition Ms Stary is busily preparing for our annual display of the boys art works which have been produced during the art lessons this year. We have changed slightly the timetable of when art lessons occur which has assisted in achieving works of art of a very high standard. The Art works will be on display in the Junior School Hall from Friday September 4 until Thursday September 10. All parents, friends and relatives are warmly invited to visit the Junior School Campus to view the pieces of art. Fathers, and grandfathers, are especially encouraged to have a look when they join us for our Father’s Day breakfast on the morning of September 4. House Athletics Carnival Our annual House Athletics Carnival will be held at the Hobart Athletic Centre next Friday, August 28. Details about the day as well as important travel arrangements are coming home with the boys today. All boys, parents and families are reminded that attendance and participation in the House Athletics Carnival is compulsory. The notice will also be on the College website ‘in the school bag.’ Please return the replies as soon as possible so that necessary arrangements can be made. Parent Volunteers This item has been in the Newsletter but will potentially start to have a very big impact very soon. Any adult working in regular close contact with children are going to need the ‘Working with Children’ card. It is a relatively easy process but very necessary. If you do not have the card, we will not be allowed to have you assist us with all the activities that we offer. Please read the information below and complete the application process as soon as possible. Catholic Education Week Mass Last week, our Grade 6 boys represented St Virgil’s College at the Catholic Education Week Mass for the greater Hobart area. Our boys were also the choir that was assigned with the task of leading the congregation in their singing – no mean feat as the Cathedral was packed with approximately 600 students and staff in attendance. Angus Paynter (Grade 6 C) was also the cantor for different parts of the Mass – a job he undertook with great reverence. I was very proud of the boys and their efforts to lead the singing in front of such a gathering and the wonderful support that they received from Mrs Williams and the Music Department. Half Way Day Walkathon All boys and their parents are asked to finalise the sending in of their walkathon cards and donations as soon as possible. Some boys have said that their card has been misplaced, lost or thrown away. This does happen in many households and is understandable. What we would really appreciate is any donation monies to be sent in as soon as possible so that we can forward our College donation to the Mary Rice Centre as soon as possible. Parents are asked to contact the Junior School Office to assist with this please. Book Week Next Thursday, the Junior School Campus will celebrate Book Week with this year’s theme being, “Books Light up our World.” Our boys have been doing a variety of activities during library lessons in readiness. Next Thursday, August 27, our boys are invited to more actively participate in this year’s Book Week theme as follows: Dress Up

Boys are asked to choose any main character from a book they have enjoyed.

Bring their costume in a bag to school on Thursday August 27.

Bring the book that the character is from.

Make a Light or Lantern that Shines

Boys are asked to create a light that shines on books, when reading.

Battery powered torches, tea lights, head torches or circuits, BUT nothing flammable.

Incorporate this into your costume.

The boys will show off their creations to each other after Recess on Thursday August 27. Parents & Friends – Upcoming Events Father’s Day Stall & Breakfast Details about this year’s Father’s Day Stall and breakfast will be coming home with the boys on Monday. This notice will also be on the College website ‘in the school bag.’ P & F Fair Meeting The final meeting in readiness for this year’s Junior School Fair will take place on Wednesday September 2 in the Junior School Library commencing at 7.00pm. Junior School Fair – Sunday September 13 Planning is well underway for this year’s Junior School Fair. Please make sure you have the date in your calendar as it is expected that every boy will be in attendance. Please check your son’s bag and the ‘in the school bag’ section of the College website so that you can stay up to date. Parent Volunteers The College as part of its commitment to community and the integral home-school partnership, welcomes parental involvement in a wide range of College activities including music, sport, canteen, camps, events, classroom help, tutoring and fundraising activities. With new legislation for volunteering coming into effect on April 1 it will be essential that all parents having a ‘Working with Children Card’. These will be required for all community organisations including scouts, sporting clubs, art, craft and music activities – any activity that brings adults into regular contact with children. More information about the Working with Children Card (including online applications) can be obtained through the Service Tasmania Website – http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/working_with_children/application Calendar update Parents and guardians are reminded to subscribe to the College’s online calendar. The great advantage of this is that if there are necessary changes to dates these changes can be made immediately. Another solid performance by the team as they head towards the final in just over a week’s time against Hutchins. Clearly they were a level above the opposition. Whilst it’s sometimes easy to become complacent, the boys maintained a good level of hockey to ensure scoring was regular and maintained focus for the majority of the game.

DIRECTOR OF IDENTITY M R S RE N EE MA C G R E GO R The 20in20 Campaign Mrs Bridget Jenkins Throughout the week staff and students began their letter-writing campaign to various politicians questioning our government’s treatment of asylum seekers. At first most letters were sent to the Prime Minister Tony Abbott and the Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten asking simple questions such as ‘Can you tell me why children are in Immigration Detention?’ and ‘Do you think children in immigration detention are safe?’ Later in the week letters were written both to the Minister and the Shadow Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Peter Dutton and Richard Marles. In the next few days the intention is to write to the Tasmanian Senators from the major parties and independents. In light of recent news reports coming out of Nauru and Manus Island it will be very interesting to read the responses to our questions from our country’s leaders. You can register for the 20in20 campaign as an individual, with a friend, as a family, or in your Pastoral Care group. You can also just write one or two letters, it all helps. An outline of how to write a letter to politicians, their contact details and

further help and suggestions are all available in the Welfare folder under 20in20 Campaign. There is also an opportunity to write letters together at lunchtimes throughout the next few weeks. M R S BE V P E T TI T Homework Club Homework Club has enjoyed record numbers of students this year and offers boys assistance in a wide range of learning areas. It is held in the College Library, each Wednesday from 3.30pm – 4-30 pm. A milo and biscuit awaits all attendees as well as specialist help in all subjects from members of staff. Special thank you to Mrs Laurie Wolfe who has been working tirelessly with many boys – and achieving great results! Homework Club is open to all students. Please register with Miss Dalton – [email protected] Maths tuition is also available to students each Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunchtime in the Library. Reconciliation Group Ms Claire Graham Last Friday Mr Leigh Oates came to St Virgil’s to run a workshop for the Reconciliation Group to build a traditional Tasmanian Aboriginal dome hut from the North West region. The hut was built over a frame made from tea tree and layered with stringy bark. It is now a water proof structure that could stand on our grounds for many years to come as a reminder of both past Tasmanian Aboriginal traditions and the continuation of their culture through to the present day.

This excursion will involve a lot of walking, if there is a medical reason that your son cannot walk long distances please contact the College. Boys will need to wear their full sports uniform. They will also need to bring a water bottle, enough food and snacks for the whole day, Geography Book and pen. It would be much easier for the boys if they bought a smaller back pack. We will be departing at 9.00 am and returning by 3.00 pm. If you or your son have any questions concerning the excursion please contact Mrs Saxton-Hillier.

SPORT 1st XVIII Football Grand Final

Mr Mark Beck

The First’s football season finished on a disappointing note last Friday against New Town. In what was a high standard of school footy, New Town just had the edge and got over the line by 9 points. It ended the St Virgil’s Tassie Hawks Cup ‘3 Peat’ dream, and while devastated to lose, the disappointment of the boys shows the commitment and love they have for the College. For this we are extremely proud of them.

With many state squad and rep squad members (and coaches) from both sides, the skill level and attack on the footy was high. New Town had the edge on the outside and were probably a little smarter setting up around stoppages and contests. Best players for the saints included Jesse Clements, Micah Reynolds, Lachlan Gadomski and Tom North.

For the year and in no particular order the four standout players were Ryan Sproule, Riley Hooker, Harry Richmond and Micah Reynolds.

We thank Mr Dalton, Mr Diienno, Mr Waddington and Mr Canning for all their hard work and assistance this year. We also thank other staff members, parents and ex-students who have assisted in some way.

‘Our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising everytime we fall’. The Saints will be back!!’

Grade 7&8 Football

The SVC Gold team won the SSATIS Grade 7&8 football competition with a resounding win over St Aloysius. Playing inspired team football they piled on goal after goal, whilst keeping their valiant opponents to just two goals. 2015 House Athletics Carnival Date Friday August 28 Venue Domain Athletics Centre Time 9.30am – 3.00pm Participation This event is part of the College educational programme and is, therefore, a day of required attendance for all students. Boys who are ill on the day will require notice of absence to be communicated to the College Office by 9.00am on that morning. Attendance checks will be taken during the day. Students will not be permitted to leave the venue until the official dismissal time. All boys are expected to participate in the events scheduled for their Grade group. Whilst not all boys are talented athletes this is a day of active participation where athletes and non-athletes alike are encouraged to contribute to their Houses. Every participant in every event gains House points! General Behavior Expectations in regard to language, behavior and appearance will be enforced. It is a day when the College is on public display. The equipment that we use must be treated correctly as most of it will not belong to us. Students are reminded that they are required to follow the directions of staff and parent officials. The disposal of personal items of litter in the appropriate receptacles is a must. Clothing The correct College Sports Uniform is to be worn on the day both to and from the Domain. Boys may participate in the College athletic, basketball, or football shorts. Slip, slop, slap advice should be followed. Spray jackets should be brought in case the weather turns cool. The house colored t-shirt is a requirement. Bags Boys are to only bring their school back pack on the day. They will take it from event to event during the day so they will always have the appropriate equipment and refreshments with them. Food Boys are responsible for their own food on the day. The canteen facility at the Domain will not be open. Boys are asked to limit their intake of food to appropriate time breaks in the programme. Large amounts of “junk foods” should be avoided. Sandwiches, fruit and water-based cordial are best. Officials Any parents who would like to assist with officiating are more than welcome. If you have some time on the day and are able to help please contact Mr. Dalton at the College on 62496555. Even if it is only for a part of the day your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Cancellation Should the morning of the 28

thappear so dark and gloomy that we consider the carnival could not provide the experience

for the boys that it should, a cancellation will be made. Notice of any cancellation will be communicated on the College web site, as well as group email at the earliest possible opportunity. If the carnival is cancelled the boys are to come to school as normal but there will be no Canteen available.

Sailing: A Signal from The Admiral

Br Peter Flint

It has just been too cold for sailing of late. Once the winds get a bit warmer we will commence.

The sailors have been attending regular Wednesday lunch time meetings, and attendance has been good. (I am sure the Wagon Wheels have nothing to do with that.)

At the last meeting the following items were presented.

A report on Angus Price’s fourth place in the International Titles.

A presentation on Right of Way rules by Jack Kennedy.

An update on the AFYC developments as available.

The possibility of a sail to Montrose.

Tentative thoughts about competition training over the holidays.

Qualities needed in the College Sailing Captain for 2016.

Close engagement with a tangible punctuality re-inforcement agent.

The interest and enthusiasm remain strong so hopefully the weather will warm up a bit soon.
