Looking for a fun activity to enjoy with your mentor?

Homemade Sprinkler

Cool off with a homemade sprinkler!

Take a 2-liter soda bottle, poke holes in it. Attach to a garden

hose via a male-to-male adapter that costs less than $5 at Lowes or Home Depot. Toss

over a tree branch and let hang. You can adjust how the

water sprinkles by adjusting the water flow. Who comes up with

these brilliant ideas?

Mentee section

Take advantage of your talents now! Use and improve your skills while you have time. It may become a hobby to enjoy once you're good at it! Let’s say you are enthused about classic cars. You can take time to learn more about them and maybe even eventually learn about restoring them!

Relax! Summer isn't ALL fun and games. It can also be a time for resting your brain after all that hard work at school. Go ahead; sleep in if you want. Watch some television, walk around in your bare feet… just whatever puts you in a calm mood.

Sign up for a sport. You will learn to work in a group, which will be beneficial in life and it will be fun. Choose one that you truly enjoy or that requires the skills that you have (such as hand/eye coordination). There are always summer sports camps and some schools may have sports in the summer, such as track and lacrosse. If you can’t join an organized team, get your friends together and play informally!

Start skateboarding or another new outdoor activity!

Take this time to achieve your goals in life. Now you can actually work towards them without the worries of what others at school will think of you. Go ahead and lose weight, clear up your skin, pursue a hobby, feed your knowledge, just whatever floats your boat.

Go places! Go to the mall, the beach, the library, or wherever alone or with a group of buddies and just hang out for a while. You can also have a party or sleepover if you're allowed. Now you don't have to worry about your parents saying, "No, because it's a school night."

Donate to charity or volunteer. During the summer there may be a lot of crusades for childrens’ donations going on. No money? No problem! Start a fundraiser to help support a good cause! Have a garage sale, a yard sale, a bake sale, a car wash, anything!

You can go even deeper than these suggestions if you like. You could take time to write a novel, find out who you truly are, discover the meaning of life, look for true beauty, or have some "family time." Now that you don't have the stress of peer pressure and studying, you CAN.

The next 10 items on our list for mentors and mentees focus on developing a more meaningful relationship with your mentee. Sharing things you like about your mentee, showing an interest in their activities and learning about their hobbies are all easy and effective ways to show you care!

41. Share a verse, quote or saying that’s meaningful to you. Write it down on a card for them to keep. 42. Talk about dating, relationships, and love-lives, including your failures and successes. 43. Ask them about their favorite cartoons. Look and laugh at them together. Show your favorites to each other. Amazon Prime has a lot of older cartoons that are fun to watch and reminisce about your child-hood! 44. Have them invite a friend to your next get-together. Observe how your mentees relate, then offer feedback at your next one-on-one meeting. 45. Observe how your mentees relate to you. Pay attention to your “gut reaction” to them. Your feel-ings and impressions are useful data about your mentees. Think about comments you could make to them and how you could help them with their people skills.

Notice how mentees talk and act with you in your meetings. Are they often late? Always making excuses about why a plan won’t work? Failing to notice or thank you for actions on their behalf? They’re probably

also displaying these responses with others and—unknowingly—sabotaging their success. Pay attention to your reactions. With care, give your mentees honest feedback on how they present themselves, and how

this affects you. Offer to coach them if they want to improve in these areas. — Linda Phillips-Jones, Ph.D., Psychologist

46. Go shopping at a thrift store. Buy something for your mentee and yourself. 47. Have them look into a mirror while you tell them four things you like about them. Be sure to include character qualities, not just looks. 48. Listen to their favorite radio stations, and mention artists and songs you liked. 49. Have them look into a mirror and say two things they like about themselves. 50. If you can’t attend your mentees’ special events, get someone to videotape them, and then enjoy the tapes (and their explanations) together.
