NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) involves students in Years 3, 5, 7
and 9 from all states and territories in Australia and is overseen by each school. If your child is in one of
these years, the program will assess their skills in four areas - reading, writing, language conventions
(spelling, punctuation and grammar) and numeracy. These are the skills every child needs to help them
progress through school and succeed with future work and study opportunities.
NAPLAN tests skills that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. It is not a test your child
is able to ‘prepare’ for. These national test results provide information on how your child is progressing and
performing in the key areas of literacy and numeracy and also help to support improvements in teaching to
benefit your child
The assessments happen nationwide every year
The NAPLAN results have been finalised and once again the students have done a great job. Reading once
again has been a highlight ,in particular, with the high fliers going beyond the scale. It is of course so very

important that children can read as this opens up their opportunities for learning other disciplines. Our
children who have had less English experiences are doing a great job as well. Their reading is well
advanced when compared to State figures. This is also borne out in Writing where these students are nearly
at the State Mean! Numeracy is above State and some of the high fliers in Year 3 have gone off the scale.
Individual NAPLAN results will be sent home soon.

Enrolments for 2015
Grade 3/ 4 Incursion
The grade 3/ 4’s as part of their Inquiry invited an aboriginal gentleman called Sean to come to Kensington to talk
about the many aspects of being aboriginal, his culture, music and art. The children were entranced as Sean shared
his experiences, history and stories and he played the didgeridoo amazingly. Ashton in Luba’s grade was so
impressed that he brought his didgeridoo along and played it very well for his classmates.
Athletics
We have an amazing number of 14 students heading off to the next stage of athletics at the Keilor Athletics
centre. Next Tuesday the young athletes will represent their school and try to get to the next level of
competition. We wish them well. Congratulations to Nucci for all the extra training she provides for these
students at break times.

Student Wellbeing
Koala day!!!!!
On Tuesday the 9th
of September the Greenies will be running Koala Day. This will be a free dress day so please bring a
gold coin donation and a fun spirit.
Koalas are disappearing. Loss of koala habitat and koala food trees (eucalyptus leaves) is the leading koala threat.
We are going to use the money to sponsor a koala on the school’s behalf. Please visit www.savethekoala.com if you
would like to find out more about why koalas need our help.
Also for any Preps & 1-2s who want to come and have a fun time we will be running an awesome disco in the hall on
Koala Day. Perhaps you’d like to come dressed as your favourite animal.
We Hope all students can join in and help us raise some money for such a good
cause.
Student Wellbeing – Bounce Back Protecting ourselves and standing up for others against bullying.
It is sad to think that some children may bully others and enjoy seeing them feel bad, especially when we know the
negative outcomes that result for the bully and the negative impact bullying has on the academic, psychological and
physical wellbeing of young people. All schools have some problem with bullying and the effectiveness of the school in
dealing with bullying is best measured by the way in which a school is able to develop a pro-social culture where bullying
is not tolerated. Some of the strategies to prevent and manage bullying that we put into practice include:
Raising awareness about what bullying is and developing anti-bullying policies
Regularly taking steps to gain a clearer picture about what the level of bullying is within the school
Activities and actions to prevent bullying including attention on school and classroom cultures, structuring safe
places and stimulating playground activities, supportive peer networks, rigorous teacher supervision, teaching of
skills and attitudes that encourage student reflection and awareness of bullying and action they can take against it
Clear steps and strategies for managing bullying that does occur
In the classroom program at the moment, students are learning the meaning of bullying: when mean things are
deliberately done to someone over and over again to try to upset or hurt them. It is different to mean behavior more
generally. It is of course wrong to use mean behavior at any time, however we only use the word bullying if a person is
being treated in this way regularly. Bullying behavior can be physical, verbal, emotional and can be direct (hurting, name
calling, put downs in body with body language or words etc) or indirect – such as telling lies about someone or their
family, telling others not to include someone or spreading rumours. We know that bullying can also occur on line through
games that allow players to communicate with each other (eg Clash of the Clans), through social networking sites, emails
etc. and as parents, it is important to understand the degree of connectivity children have even when ‘playing’ on line. In
this Bounce Back unit, students will explore why some children may bully others, how put-downs create a culture that
allows bullying to happen and what everyone can do to prevent bullying and to act to stop it when it occurs. The clear
message is that bullying is totally unacceptable and that it is everyone’s problem. We all need to take responsibility to
challenge the use of put downs (at home as well as at school), to think for ourselves about what is right and to stand up for
others at school and in the broader community. In this way we will create a culture at school, in families and in the
community where bullying behaviours have no space to flourish.

Prep D Stories
Prep D have been using pictures as a writing stimulus to
help us write our narratives.
Here are some of our stories. Enjoy!
In a spooky home whenever you ring the doorbell a big crab would cook you for dinner. One night Smellyman and Cleanman rang the doorbell. The crab came out of the home and cooked them up. Fireman and Iceman battled the crab and they cooked him up for dinner. Sam Prep D
One day there was a crew of bats in a freaky house. When somebody rang the doorbell the bats would come down and eat you. One day the tooth fairy had enough of the bats eating the people. So the tooth fairy killed all of the bats. OWEN Prep D
One day there was a scary house. In the house was a witch with a big nose. The witch turned everything scary. A dragon came and burned the witch and the people were happy. Setara . Prep D
In a freaky house there was a witch. She made lots of very bad desserts. One day a boy came to the house. Then the boy came into the house. Luckily the witch was frozen because the sun came up, so the boy put her in the bin. Isabella Prep D.
At a haunted house there was Frankenstein and a Vampire. Frankenstein knocked on the door and the Vampire tried to suck his blood. But Frankenstein shoved garlic down the Vampire’s throat and killed him. Zack . Prep D.

Up Up Up and away
Into the light of the sunny day
The view is so great I can see the bay
I smell the smoke from the campfire cooking
I can feel that the devilish drop is brewing
3, 2, 1, I hear them shout
Now I am spinning around and about
I soar through the air like a kite on a string
Oh no! I think I am going to fall
But then, “you’re fine” I hear Dave call
Now I let go, I can’t believe I was scared
I am even doing some poses in the air
I start to swing slowly, slowly
I slowly come to the ground and everyone’s clapping
After that I am a very happy chappie.
Starting Week one Term 4 the Care

enable parents to book children in to the
Care Program for permanent or casual
days much easier.
This new streamline system allows
families to easily make a new enrolment,
change old enrolment details and make
casual/permanent bookings and
cancellations all from the comfort of your
own home.
The online system will be used for before
school, after school and vacation care
enrolments and bookings.
For families who choose to use this new
system the benefits include:
Being able to change your own bookings
in the care program systems.
Clearly viewing available places on each
day and when your child is able to be
booked in.
Being able to view what days your child is
booked in permanently and which days
they are booked in on a casual basis on a
user friendly calendar.
Attaching or updating any relevant and
important medical information including
medical action plans. Immunisation
certificates can be uploaded as part of the

enrolment.
Parents will only be able to see the details
relating to their own child/ren.

We from far away by Bilal
Valley Under the Rock by Libby
We from far away We, from far away
Took a long trip there Took a bush walk there
Into the crave highway Narrow descent,
To the obese airport Steep stone stairs,
Seeing the plane to America Found a rock cathedral
And the haze of mountains In mansions of green, We arrive to America Ancient secret cavern
Pillars holding the airport Glistening, serene.
Like the pillars in the cathedral cave The song of songs as there
Signs that are confusing The heartbeat of the earth
Never we've seen before The oldest story known
We go to the hotel Of life, of death ,re-birth
In Miami, this is were we are The songs of songs was there
The maid speaks the same language Where beauty rules supreme But in a different accent Enfolded in its splendour
It was hard to understand There was another voice we heard
I'm here far away Echo from those shimmering walls
We, from far away, Took a bush walk there Narrow descent, Steep stone stairs, Found a rock cathedral In mansions of green, Ancient secret cavern Glistening, serene. The song of songs was there The heartbeat of the earth. The oldest story known Of life, of death, re-birth. The song of songs was there Where beauty rules supreme Enfolded in is splendour We dreamed within a dream There was another voice we heard Plaintive, distant, hollow, Echo from those shimmering walls
We from far away Took a car drive Along the high way Until we found the sea We swim under the pier Cleaning our body Drying our self with a towel Go back in the car Time we go home On the side high way The water drops from the sky We get home The house has lots of water on it When we get in-side it is warm By Aston
Night at the Motel
We, from far away,
Took a bush train
To the country
The country air
Is fresh and crisp
Found a lizard
In the country sand
Walked to the Hotel
Better ten the city hotels
The songs of the radio
The water dripping down
The coolest bed ever
Full of bedding
The voice of the T.V
