Meet Doc Whipple, one of our Community Am-bassadors. You’ve seen him volunteering at our Chatham Farmers’ Market tent and paper shred fundraisers. His involvement with the Center be-gan after he and his wife read a bulletin at the post office listing the Center’s activities. The Men’s Dis-cussion group was on that list, and his wife sug-gested he try it out. He did and he’s been coming to the Center ever since. As a Community Ambas-sador, Doc tells everyone to try out and experience the Center for themselves because there’s such a wide variety of programs and activities to choose from. While he and his wife have participated in many programs and events, he especially enjoys the Men’s Discussion group. Participants talk about current events, sports, and whatever topics spark interest during lively and engaged conver-sations. He encourages attendance and adds, “We must be doing something right because the group keeps on growing.” (The Men’s Discussion group meets Fridays at 10:30AM. No member-ship is required and there is no fee.) Doc and his wife have lived in Chatham for 50 years and raised their two children here; they also have three grandchildren. Fun Fact: Doc, who was in the shipping industry before retiring, got the nickname “Doc” when he was a child. There was a need to distinguish between him and another boy with the same first name in ballgames. One day, a player announced to him: “beginning tomorrow, you’ll be called ‘Doc’.” The player had watched the ‘Howdy Doody Show’ featuring the show’s organ player — Doc Whipple. A number of years later our Doc Whipple met that Doc Whipple!
