spring break

LIZ DZUROSENIOR PHOTOGRAPHER

If you’re stuck at FAU as a campus resident, or you’re a commuter student and broke during spring break, we’ve got some ideas on how to

spend your free time. The UP has printed summer guides the past

two years on places and activities in south Florida for students to get out and have fun while they’re away from school.

This time around we compiled a special guide concentrating on making the best of your spring break without having to travel far or spend a lot of cash.

We’ve made it easy for you and have picked the best beach, a worthwhile food spot and a bar with kick-ass drinks in locations close to campus. And we didn’t forget about the Jupiter residents — we predict turtles and pirates in your immediate future.

But first, you should probably update your wardrobe by getting a new bathing suit and outfit if you’re going to be out and about. To make this happen, we’ve got a simple style guide with examples of new fashions that will help you look like you belong on the beach.

If you’re really trapped in the dorms or Village Apartments, we’ve compiled a scavenger hunt of random and interesting things that can be found on the Boca campus.

Keep this issue handy during the break so you can grab it and go to create some awesome memories that your out-of-town friends will be jealous of when they return to school.

It doesn’t have to suck because you’re stuck

Spring break is when you’re supposed to hit up the beach for a whole week of fun in the sun. But if all you have is that color-faded bathing suit balled up in the back of your dresser and an

old T-shirt to wear over it, don’t bother leaving the house. Here are some style tips on spring fashion trends to bring you up

to date:

GuysGo for a pattern with a pop of color. Don’t over-do it with a busy print. Stick to a two- or three-colored scheme.

Bathing suitsGirls

Mix and match your bikini separates. Pick a solid color for one piece and then grab a crazy and colorful print for the other.

GuysTanks and shirts with some stripes and no bold logos are what you have to look for. Bonus points if it somehow matches your board shorts.

cover-upsGirls

Light but loud colors, floral patterns, and flowing tops are what it’s all about.

Dressed up yet dressed down is the key. A button-down and khakis can seem a bit formal, but a woven look to the fabric will keep it casual and more comfortable.

DRINKPepe’s Hideaway1045 E. Atlantic Ave.

Delray Beach, FL 33483(561) 276-3570

Pepe’s Hideaway might sound like some sort of gentlemen’s club, but if you can get past the street-front

shops, you’ll find a little hole-in-the-wall bar that always seems be on a happy hour special and has good music playing from the jukebox.

The décor is mostly horse racing photos and jockey shirts, but there’s also a prominent amount of Boston Red Sox memorabilia. As long as you’re not wearing a Yankees jersey, the bartender will serve you cheap beer and keep you entertained all night.

There’s also an open pool table in the middle of the room and they hold poker tournaments a few nights a week.

A1A and Atlantic Ave.:Take any exit out of the Boca campus and head east. Make a left onto Federal Highway and head north. Go right onto Atlantic Avenue, head east and park anywhere.

There’s lots of free public parking all over the avenue, and you can walk to the beach from there. You can also park at the meters on A1A, or at Anchor Park, which is a bit south of Atlantic Avenue on A1A.

EATCrepes by the Sea

6 NE 5th Ave.Delray Beach, FL 33483

(561) 243-2004

Crepes can be eaten for breakfast or lunch or as a snack. This thin French pancake can be used to wrap an omelet, sandwich meats, salads or sweet

desserts.Crepes by the Sea has a menu with traditional French-

style crepes, like the Lox and spinach breakfast crepe. But they also have an inventive and humorous style, like the ham or turkey and cheese crepes called “Ricky Bobby” and “Jean Girard” — references to Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen’s character’s fight about crepes or “really thin pancakes” in the movie Talladega Nights.

The dessert crepes are the best. You can choose your toppings. Desert crepes can come with Nutella, maple syrup, brown sugar, powdered sugar, freshly sliced banana and strawberries, whipped cream or ice cream. There’s even a PB&J crepe.

To compliment almost any selection of crepe is their coffee, made from a home roast. You can choose from an espresso, macchiato, café latte or cappuccino, or get any of that iced with an option to make it an ice cream float.

FUN FACT: The crepe mix they use is kosher.

The public beach covers a lot of area, so there is plenty of space to pick a spot where you won’t feel too crowded.

It’s close to downtown shops, restaurants and bars.

DRINKIrishmen

1745 NW Boca Raton Blvd.Boca Raton, FL 33432

(561) 368-1129

I might be a bit biased because they sign my paycheck every week, but the Irishmen is a great spot that’s right off campus with great

drink specials during the week.College Night is Monday and Thursday, where

the best deals are pitchers of beer for $3 or a mixed-drink pitcher for $7.

Although the pitcher specials start at 7 p.m., the bar can look kind of like a ghost town before 10 p.m. on Monday nights. But during those last 3 hours of business, the DJ starts, the place gets packed, tables get pushed together for beer pong and then it’s a cool place to be.

On Thursday’s College Night you’ll probably run into the FAU Rugby team after they get out of practice. They’ll be sweaty, smelly and possibly singing or chanting but they know how to drink and have a good time.

The gift that keeps on giving can be found on Wednesdays, because it’s 2-4-1 from open to close. Not only do you get free beer, wine and mixed drinks, but you also get a wooden nickel to redeem your free drink that you can keep to use another week.

EATCannoli Kitchen

2001 N. U.S. 1 Boca Raton, FL 33431

(561) 338-2929

Choosing a slice of pizza has now become almost as hard of a decision as picking an ice cream flavor. At Cannoli Kitchen, they

offer a wide range of very random toppings one wouldn’t think to put on a pie. From Mexican and BBQ chicken to baked ziti, these toppings will make your mouth water as you peer through the glass while contemplating your food future.

It only takes one of these huge slices to fill your stomach. But it won’t empty your wallet because they offer a 15-percent discount for FAU students if you show your Owl Card.

If you save room you have to get a cannoli — it’s what the place is named for, after all.

So what the heck is a cannoli? It’s a Sicilian pastry consisting of a creamy filling made mostly of ricotta cheese inside a fried pastry dough tube. The ends are covered in chocolate chips and then it’s dusted with powdered sugar.

These little tubes of amazing are made to order so you get the perfect creamy-crunchy combination.

If you like Italian foods you’re probably already drooling, but if you’ve never had one, the taste of the ricotta cheese as a sweet frosting-like consistency can be an acquired taste. In that case, go across the parking lot to Sonny’s Gelato to enjoy their homemade Italian-style ice cream. You can’t go wrong there.

BONUS: Cannoli Kitchen’s east Boca location delivers to FAU! You don’t get the student discount with delivery, but it evens out by not spending the gas money to drive there.

TOP: A self-portrait while watching the sunrise at Spanish River beachCENTER: A slice of baked ziti pizza from Cannoli KitchenBOTTOM: The 17 beer taps at Irishmen

It’s not crowded, because of the limited parking

It’s the closest to campus, and there’s an exit onto Spanish River Boulevard.PLUS: If you can’t find parking, ride your bike from campus or park at the Walgreens on U.S. 1 and ride your bike from there. 1 2 3The sand and the

water are clean and clear, compared to Boca’s other public beach, South Beach Park on Palmetto

Spanish River public beach: Take a right turn out of the Boca campus at the Spanish River Boulevard exit and head east, and you’re there after the bridge.

DRINKKahuna Bar and Grill

249 N. Ocean Blvd.Deerfield Beach, FL 33441

(954) 725-0244

Kahuna’s tiki-hut-inspired style is the perfect fit for its beachfront spot.

This place has more of a local, laid-back crowd than any of the other restaurants or bars in the immediate area — which makes it perfect for sitting back and chilling with drinks after a long day in the sun.

They offer frozen drinks from giant Slurpee-looking machines they have behind the bar that are all premixed with alcohol.

Since they’re premixed with who knows how much booze, these delicious frozen drinks can sneak up on you real quick. So limit yourself to two … at first.

Kahuna is also a great daytime and nighttime spot because of the local reggae and jam bands they bring in, like the Stampede Movement, the Resolvers, and Spred the Dub.

There are a bunch of metered parking spots and there’s a four-story parking garage within walking distance from the shore.

EATCharm City Burgers1136 E. Hillsboro Blvd.

Deerfield Beach, FL 33441(954) 531-0300

The fact that you can add a fried egg and a hash brown on top of a 1/3-pound steak cheeseburger is amazing. Then to learn

that I can get a side of homemade sweet potato fries and a milkshake to go with it makes me want to get my car keys out.

Located west of The Cove plaza on Hillsboro Boulevard, Charm City Burgers’ tiny building can be easily missed, but you won’t ever forget it after you’ve been there.

Among the meaty options to stuff your face with, they also have “other burgers.” The Gobbler is a turkey burger, the Mobster is an Italian sausage burger, and the Banh Mi is an Asian pork and shrimp burger.

Make sure you plan out the timing of your meal because the fried Twinkies and Oreos for dessert will give you just enough time to make it back to campus before the food coma hits.

The pier in Deerfield Beach:Exit Boca campus at Glades Road or at 20th Street and head east. Turn right at U.S. 1 and head south. Turn left at Hillsboro Boulevard and head east. Turn left at A1A and find parking.

beachTop reasons it’s the best:

best of deerf i eld

This beach is a huge social spot for lots of high school and college kids who like to hang out on the north side of the pier. They have volleyball courts and there are always people playing with Frisbees or a football, so it’s the perfect opportunity to make new friends if you’re brave enough to invite yourself into a game.

A bit south of the pier there are good rocks to climb on and a mile marked out on the sidewalk if you want to exercise.

You can fish off the pier and get a “large catch” like King Mackerel or Snapper. It’s only $1 to sight-see and $4 to fish, but remember to bring your own gear because rentals aren’t available. It’s open 24 hours, so you can go at any time.

1 2 3Loggerhead Park in Juno Beach:Take a left out of FAU at the Donald Ross Road exit and head east. Go left at U.S. 1 and head north. Make a right into Loggerhead Park and park.

Turtle nesting season starts March 1st and this park has a “Marinelife Center” where you can visit and learn about sea turtles.

It’s clean and there’s lots of space to pick a spot on the sand.

There’s a decent amount of parking that’s all close to the beach entrance.

continued on page 23 >>>TOP: Loggerhead Park’s beach on a clear day as the tide comes inRIGHT: One of many rescued sea turtles that can be seen at the Marinelife Center in the observation tanks in the courtyard

BY THE WAY

It’s pretty much illegal to approach or disturb or touch a nesting or newly hatched sea turtle in any way.

But, if you just so happen to be on the beach at night for whatever reason and see a nesting turtle, don’t freak out or shine any lights on it. As long as you can handle just sitting in the dark and watching it from a safe distance, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

If you can wait until summer, the Marinelife Center

has “Turtle Walks” a couple of nights per week starting in June. Groups of up to 40 people accompany an “experienced Loggerhead Marinelife Center scout” to the beach at night to naturally observe a turtle laying her eggs.

Go to www.marinelife.org/experiences for more details.

SEA TURTLES Loggerhead Marinelife Center

14200 U.S. 1Juno Beach, FL 33408

(561) 627-8280

If you’re going to be spending a bunch of time on Juno Beach, there are a couple of things you should know about a very prominent figure

in that area: the sea turtle.

SEA TURTLES FUN FACTS

Nesting season starts March 1 in Palm Beach County.

Juno Beach is recognized as the most active nesting area in the world.

All species of sea turtles are listed as endangered.

Five species of sea turtles nest on Juno Beach: Leatherback, Loggerhead, Green, Hawksbill and Kemp’s Ridley.

Leatherback turtles start nesting first in March. They are named for their smooth rubbery shell and can weigh up to 1,500 pounds.

Lights along A1A are turned off during nesting season so that the turtles coming ashore can nest and the hatchlings returning to sea don’t become disoriented by the bright lights.

DRINKPirate’s Well9477 Alt A1A

Lake Park, FL 33403(561) 629-7020

First of all, the place is decked out in pirate stuff, which makes me want to start commandeering all of the decorations right

off the walls. Best of all, they have ridiculous drink specials that no college student can pass up.

Tuesday nights are 25-cent pitchers of Bud Select, and Wednesdays are $3 Captain Morgan, $2 well drinks and $1 16-ounce PBR cans, from 9 p.m. till closing at 3 a.m. both nights.

Even better: From at 9 p.m. till closing on Thursdays, you can get PBR on draft for 5 cents. That means you can buy the whole bar a round and still not break the bank. The only rule is no pennies.

There are live bands Tuesday through Saturday night, a Jagermeister-decorated pool table and other phenomenally cheap drink specials throughout the week, which makes The Pirate’s Well worth visiting with a designated driver.

EATThirsty Turtle

13981 U.S. 1Juno Beach, FL 33408

After checking out all those sea turtles at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center, where else to go but the Thirsty Turtle for some

great grub just down the street?Decorated in wood and swordfishes, it closely

resembles an Ale House, but their menu has a lot more appetizing seafood dishes to choose from. If you go fishing that day, you can bring in your cleaned catches and they’ll cook it up for you.

Besides the huge wraps and combination seafood pastas, their chicken wings are hands-down amazing.

They toss these nonbreaded and fried beauties in a honey-garlic barbeque sauce that you can get mild, medium or hot. To make it even better, if you dip them in bleu cheese or ranch, you don’t lose much of the glorious glaze in the dressing because of its thicker consistency.

You’d better have a stack of napkins before you get started because things will get messy, like your face.

TEASER: If your mouth is watering but you don’t live anywhere near Juno Beach, they actually have a west Boca location at 9908 Yamato Road.
