In 2005, when being interviewed for my first job at aDelhi broadsheet, I was still wallowing in late ado-lescence. Clark Kent apart, I didnt have any jour-

nalistic heroes. Literature graduates have few worldlysmarts and even fewer transferrable skills. I was justglad I was being given a chance to write. A pittance, yes, but the salary did help. I could move into a LajpatNagar house with my childhood sweetheart. My news-room stories bored her. Youd just be an extra on Allthe Presidents Men, she told me when we werebreaking up. She was right. I had nothing on anyone.Okay, I had nothing. Im usually not one for nostalgia, but watching Paatal Lok (2020) was a blow of sorts tothe head. Memories of Delhi came flooding back. Inthe shows first scene, police officer Hathi Ram Chaud-hary (Jaideep Ahlawat) offers one of his juniors someinsight. Delhi, he tells him, is stratified, divided intothree worlds heaven, earth and hell. Heaven getsequated with Lutyens Delhi. Vasant Vihar, Noida andMehrauli all qualify as earth, while hell is made up ofcolonies like Outer Yamuna Paar, grimy, grungy areasthat Chaudhary patrols. Much as I hate to admit it, mytime in Delhi was spent on earth. The architecture of our office was a microcosm of theDelhi Chaudhary described. The political bureau, madeup of reporters who would hang around Lutyens corri-dors, had a separate enclosure all to themselves. Therest of us sub-editors who would struggle with in-scrutable copy, feature writers, the Carrie Bradshaws ofthe capital would start filling the office by two inthe afternoon. Wed be curing hangovers with weakmachine coffee, devising ways to procrastinate dis-creetly. There used to be one corner, however, thatwould always remain empty. I hardly ever saw crimereporters turn up.I must confess I was always felt envious of crime re-porters. Theyd file stories from places as far asGhitroni, Janakpuri and Dallupura. My stories onlyever took me back to South Delhi. Id even find routinestories of chain snatchings a thing of wonder. I had artsand culture stories to edit when news of the Nitharimurders left our office shocked in 2006. More thanoutrage, I felt I was missing out. I wanted to get myhands dirty. I wanted to be a real journalist. I wanted toaccess Delhis netherworld. Nearly 15 years later,Paatal Lok seems to want to offer some comfort. Crimereporters, it shows, are also forced to ask vapid ques-tions. Their nosiness gets reasonable officers suspended.

Teamwork, the ethicessential to journalism

Literature & HealthBaseless social media is question

mark on journalist credibility SUSHIL PANDIT

Today, our society is passing through a lot of con-fusion.In the current scenario society is movingvery fast in the name of modernity. There is no

awareness of right and wrong or we don’t want to con-sider it. The motive of this article intends to communi-cate the difference between traditional media and socialmedia to the entire society. In the present scenario, fic-titious journalism has been promoted by providing sup-port to social media. Social media shouldhave been used to achieve social co - ordi-nation, but at present some people are busyplaying with the values of journalism, so-ciety and nation by making it an unfairmeans of cheap popularity through socialmedia.

Journalists and journalism have someresponsibility towards all sections of thesociety. The discharge of which a journal-ist is well aware of. But some unfair persons have madethe media very cheap and purely commercialise in frontof the society. Social media is dominating traditionalmedia today.

Here, the traditional media refers to news channels, newspapers, magazines, and news broadcasting in gen-eral. The public, concerned with the credibility of thenews, is today in a dilemma over a post in the form ofnews from different platforms in social media. It is notas easy to analyse what is right and what lies. Somepeople are giving their baseless information to face-book, youtube, and other sources of social media. So-cial media is a huge challenge to journalism in realform because of the personal interests of people givingnews to a general information through facebook, youtube, and other sources, and it is not against the me-dia as a competition but to save the identity of journal-ism. For, an image of true and honest journalism is al-ready on the surface. Ministry of information & broad-casting figure About 70 per cent of the self-existing

news channels on the Internet don’t have any recogni-tion, which is being considered illegal by the govern-ment of India. Any newspaper, magazine, or portal reg-istered by the RNI government of India and any TV, ra-dio and youtube channel registered with the ministry ofinformation broadcasting, can appoint journalists orcorrespondents as the staf. Even after the clear directionissued by the ministry, the rules are being overthrownand this all is happening in front of representatives ofthe government. It is clear that without any permission

or registration, this entire play is based onelements of society, whom’r constantlymoving and dominating the desire to gaintheir own ambitions and cheap popularity. In view of the events that are spoiling jour-nalism, through social media. It has come toseeing, at certain places local administrationhas also restricted this kind of fake socialmedia. The High Court, writ petition in re-lation to print, electronic and social media,

as per provisions passed in civil 468/2020 and469/2020, against persons engaged in misleading pub-licity in Indian penal code section 188, 505-1 and in thecircumstances of covid-19 disaster managementact. The provision of punishment under section 1 & 2 ofthe epidemic diseases act, 1957 has also been ensured. In some districts of Haryana, such broadcasting hasbeen prohibited by those who issued orders for imme-diate shut down of social media platforms, such asYoutube, Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Twitter,Telegraph, Public Apps, being run as news channels, di-rectly or indirectly. While those in action may be di-rected to understand only the tentative decisions takenat the time of the corona, it may be but natural to keepthe real nature of journalism alive. It is not an offenceto journalism through social media but to ignore the in-formation and broadcasting ministry’s guidance is notless than a crime. To present the news on social media, first follow the government’s instructions and thenmake them follow the means of social media.

Sugar consumptionand its ill effects

While sugar and sugar madeproducts lure people, a re-cent study has unveiled the

ill effects caused due to sugar con-sumption. According to the novelstudy, the consumption of sugar islinked with larger fatdeposits around theheart and in the ab-domen, which are ahealth risk.

The study waspublished in the Euro-pean Journal of Pre-ventive Cardiology, ajournal of the Euro-pean Society of Cardi-ology.

"When we consume too muchsugar the excess is converted to fatand stored," said study author Ms SoYun Yi, a PhD student at the Univer-sity of Minnesota School of PublicHealth.

"This fat tissue located aroundthe heart and in the abdomen releaseschemicals into the body which can beharmful to health. Our results supportlimiting added sugar intake," addedYi.

Excess sugar consumption is aworldwide problem. The six coun-tries with the highest sales of sugarydrinks per capita are Chile, Mexico,Argentina, Peru, the US, and SaudiArabia. The demand for sugar is ex-pected to increase in Asia, Africa, andRussia. This observational study ex-amined both sugar-sweetened bever-

ages (such as soft drinks, fruit drinks, energy drinks) and sugar added tofoods and beverages for sweetness(for example when cooking or inprocessed foods). The researchersanalysed the association between

long-term sugar con-sumption and fatstores around theheart and other or-gans.

Data were ob-tained from CoronaryArtery Risk Develop-ment in Young Adults(CARDIA), an ongo-ing cohort study in

the US that includes centres in Alaba-ma, California, Illinois, and Minneso-ta. A total of 3,070 healthy partici-pants aged 18 to 30 were included inthis study. Food and beverage intakeswere measured three times over a 20-year period (1985 to 2005). After 25years (in 2010) computed tomogra-phy (CT) scans of the chest and ab-domen were performed to measurefat volumes in the abdomen andaround the heart. Researchers foundthat sugar intake over the 20-year pe-riod was related to fat volumes laterin life. Higher intakes of both sugar-sweetened beverages and added sugarwere related to greater fat storesaround organs in a stepwise fashion."Our findings provide more evidencethat consuming too much added sug-ar and sugary drinks is related to ahigher amount of fat tissue.

Pressure is mounting onthe Pakistan govern-ment to review its

China policy or risk theprospect of facing globalisolation and condemnationalong with China in thewake of China’s clash withIndia in Eastern Ladakh.

Informed sources haverevealed that the ForeignOffice has told ImranKhan’s PMO that unlessPakistan did a quick coursecorrection on its China re-lationship, it would face thewrath of the world’s majoreconomic powers whowere determined to isolateChina consequent to theclash with India and Chi-na’s behaviour during theCovid pandemic.

The first indication ofwhat awaits Pakistan for itsblind support to China wasthe manner in which theEuropean Union bannedthe national airline PIAfrom landing in Europe.Pakistan has made all-outefforts to convince the EUthat only internationallyqualified pilots would flythose routes but the EU re-fuses to listen. The Euro-pean nations are moving toisolate China at the diplo-matic level for its aggres-sive stance against Indiaand here Pakistani sourcesbelieve that Islamabad

could face collateral dam-age. Already there is greatanger against China in Pak-istan, especially inBalochistan and in GilgitBaltistan at the manner inwhich Pakistan’s resourcesare being exploited by Chi-na under the China-Pak-istan Economic Corridor orCPEC to the detriment oflocal people. The Baloch

and the people of GilgitBaltistan are denied localjobs, as Chinese companiesprefer to bring in cheapChinese labourers to do thetasks.

Moreover, the Chinesecompanies are unmindfulof local customs and tradi-tions and have kept them-selves aloof from localpeople and are, therefore,

viewed with suspicion. Theword has also spread thatChina has usurped land inIndia and could do thesame in forward areas inPakistan. Getting swampedby Chinese culture is a def-inite fear among the peopleof Gilgit-Baltistan, whohave expressed their con-cern to several officials.News reports of the cruel

treatment of ethnic UighurMuslims by the Chinesegovernment are also thetopic of conversation inmany religious WhatsAppgroups.

On the other hand thenumber of coronavirus cas-es in Pakistan have risen to2,25,283 while the fatalitiesrelated to the deadly virusin the country stand at

4,619.According to latest fig-

ures available on Dawn,125,094 people have recov-ered. So far Sindh has re-ported 90,721 cases ofcoronavirus while 80,297cases have been recordedin Punjab so far.

Islamabad and the fed-eral territories collectivelyreported 163 new cases andtwo deaths, the govern-ment’s Covid-19 portalsaid.

Pakistan Foreign Min-ister Shah MahmoodQureshi had on Friday an-nounced that he has testedpositive for COVID-19 andsaid he will carry on his du-ties from home.

"This afternoon, I felt aslight fever and immediate-ly quarantined myself athome. I have now testedpositive for COVID-19. Bythe grace of Allah, I feelstrong and energetic. I willcontinue to carry on my du-ties from home. Pleasekeep me in your prayers,"Qureshi said in a tweet.

According to a Dawnreport several politicians, including members of theruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have been di-agnosed with the virus overthe past few months as theinfection continues tospread in Pakistan.

Land would have doneno more than givenour children an extra

Most of all, leftuntended as it has now beenfor years (so awkwardlyplaced was it for our neigh-bour to use almost as if itwas meant to be in our gar-den!), this no-mans landhas erupted into a riot oflong grasses, wildflowers, and visiting wildlife, that isa daily delight.

And thats preciselywhats bothering me today(besides the pandemic, in-justice, inequality, corrup-tion, yada, yada, yada). To-day I complete 20 years inBritain. Twenty years of be-ing a British resident, whilstremaining an Indian citizen, because I havent gotaround to changing a situa-tion I consider perfect. Ofbelonging nowhere. Or bet-

to more than one country. We have parents, siblingsand old friends spreadacross the earth. We havelived, worked and loved indifferent locales, retaininglinks with many, or at leasthappy memories. Britain ismy home. I have lived herefor most of my adult life. Here, where I met and mar-ried my husband, we haveraised our beautiful chil-dren. India is also my home. That is where my parentsdwell, and going back is al-ways a homecoming. I grewup in the Philippines and so,that too is home. As areBangladesh and Burma, lands of my ancestors,

whose tales live on in me.France, where we often hol-iday, is a home away fromhome. And the Mediter-ranean, with its unexplainedlure, is the home of myimagination. Everywhere ishome, and most of us havemixed allegiances. So, whyconstruct watertight com-partments like nationalities? All it does is create factionsand conflict. Why add to theruin of the planet by wastingpassport paper on concoctedpersonalities? All it does iscause heartbreak when, asthe tides of history washover our castles in the sand, changing borders, and tak-ing our hard-won identitieswith it, we are left as we be-gan just human.

Is nationality fluid, are borders futile?

MELBOURNE: Australia coach Justin Langer on Sunday likened David Warner to unbeaten boxing great Floyd Mayweather, calling him an "absolute ripper" who will never get to be a leader thanks to the 2018 ball-tampering scandal. The then skipper Steve Smith and Warner, who was his deputy, were handed one-year bans for their involvement in the infamous incident in the Test match against South Africa in March 2018. "Look, I support him. Having David Warner in the team is like having Floyd Mayweather in the team," Langer told Channel Nine television's 'Sports Sunday', referring to the American icon who remained undefeated in his 50-bout professional career and owned 15 major world titles in five weight divisions. Warner, who was identified as the instigator of the 2018 incident which prompted a review of the "win-at-all-cost" Australian cricket culture, was slapped with a lifetime captaincy ban. Smith, however, is now eligible for a leadership role.

Not the end of the world if Tottenham miss top six, says Jose MourinhoLONDON: Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho said it would not be the end of the world if his side failed to finish in the top six of the Premier League, something that has not happened since 2009.A 3-1 defeat by Sheffield United on Thursday left Tottenham ninth in the table and struggling to qualify for Europe. They are 10 points behind fifth-placed Manchester United, and only a win against Everton on Monday will revive their flagging hopes. "If that doesn't happen it's not the end of the world, it's probably the beginning of a new world," Mourinho told reporters at his virtual news conference on Saturday. "Things change, change for you, change for other club. Squads change, motivations change, group dynamics change, a group that was strong 10 years ago is possibly not strong anymore, a player at the maximum of motivation is not any more. SOUTHAMPTON, JULY 5: West Indies batsman Shamarh Brooks believes that the team needs to bat well against England in the upcoming three-match Test series to get the desired results. The right-handed batsman admitted that pace bowling is their strength. Brooks feels if the side will perform well as a batting unit than they could win games. "Clearly our bowling will be our strength and has been for the past couple of years. If you look at our batting, when we do get it right as a unit we have won games. That's why I'm stressing on the point that we need to bat well, especially against a team like England at home, who are going to be very challenging," ESPNcricinfo quoted Brooks as saying. "The coach, I guess he would feel that way because of what he saw in the last game, where the bowlers really raised the intensity and we fell down. But I still don't feel that, when we come to the Test series, it will go that way. We need to apply ourselves, stick to the basics and stick to our gameplans," he added. A likely top five of the Test side, Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Brooks, Shai Hope and Roston Chase managed just 29 runs between them in West Indies' second intra-squad warm-up match, a rain-affected four-day game at Old Trafford earlier this week.

Stokes is a bit like Kohli: Hussain

TALKSSHORT

MUMBAI: Former England skipper Nasser Hussain has compared Ben Stokes' leadership abilities with Virat Kohli, saying the all-rounder will turn out to be an "excellent captain" when he dons the hat in Joe Root's absence during the first Test against the West Indies in Southampton, starting July 8. England's World Cup hero Stokes was on last Tuesday named captain for the opening Test against the West Indies in place of Root, who has taken leave to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. England will take on the West Indies in a three-match Test in a "bio-secure environment", which will mark the resumption of of international cricket amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. "Generally, what Ben (Stokes) does is a bit like Virat (Kohli). Everything he does, he does it at 100 mile an hour. So, I think he will be an excellent captain, although he's only a stand-in captain," Hussain, a respected voice in world cricket, said on Star Sports show 'Cricket Connected'.
