Armed with the overall goal of contributing to the development of Min-danao by bringing to its people the UP standard of academic excellence, social responsibility and nationalism, various curricular programs were instituted by the University of the Philippines Mindanao since it was established in 1995. One of this is the Architecture program which was instituted in April 1999 to jumpstart the vision of the university to be the region’s center for excellence in the field of architecture and design. Mindanao has undoubtedly a rich cultural heritage that is reflected in its architecture and design. This setting is the cradle from which creative endeavors by the faculty and students emanate.

Likewise, there is a boom in the construction of vaious edifices in key cities and neighboring areas making the architecture profession competitive. This program has truly anticipated the need of Davao City and the region for architec-tural professionals required in fast grow-ing areas. These areas are suitable for the latest concepts of sustainable and green architecture, also being adopted by the architecture program of UP Mindanao.

Ten years into the program, and though struggling as expected of young endeavors, it has its share of triumphs. It is making a headstart in revising its program, in indigenous architectural research, in extension work and most especially in producing graduates that are globally competitive. More challenges will surely come its way but as shown by its first decade, these can be hurdled by its committed faculty coupled with its students who are focused and output-oriented.

Congratulations for a decade of learning and growing. You make UP Min-danao proud!

Emma Ruth V. BayoganVice Chancellor for Academics

Congratulations to the BS Architecture Program on the occasion of its 10th year anniversary!

The academic program has withstood the test of time with the 100% passing rate of its graduates in the licen-sure examination. This is the acid test, that clear evidence indicating that the BS Architecture program of UP Mindanao is the highest quality standards.

This laudable academic program has indeed brought honors to the Univer-sity of the Philippines through its gradu-ates, researches and extension projects. While much remains to be done in terms of facilities, UP Mindanao rigorously pro-vided our students with that conducive and enabling learning environment with the best mentors.

UP Mindanao BS Architecture program has embraced the challenge of creating a research-oriented and relevant architecture program for Mindanao. Our students and faculty have immersed them-selves to study the indigenous architec-tural designs of our region, thus enriching the discipline here in Mindanao. Perhaps in the near future, our progrma will be at the forefront of blending indigenous Mindanao designs with the architectural concepts of the western world.

To the faculty of the BS Archi-tecture program, I congratulate you on the accomplishments fitting a 10th year anniversary celebration. With your talents and dedication, may the program be an instrument in the development of Minda-dano where beauty and amenities will be the norm.

To the graduating class, I wish you the best! I hope that you will return to this, your university, not only for the memories but also for sharing your knowledge, experiences and resources to the next batch of architects.

R A decade of existence is not just an occasion of celebration but also a critical ex-amination of the program’s achievement and performance. The programs humble begin-nings which started with only one faculty and twelve students which held its classes within the compound of PCA with its rubbish surroundings of coconut trees and shrubs, is something to reckon with. After which the program has doubled with its number of enrollees and so the number of faculty has also slowly incremented. The program has con-sistently picked up and the students steadily enrolled in to the program. However another unfortunate event has befallen the program when the UP President Nemenzo under his term has challenged the BS Architecture Program to be abolished due to insufficient number of faculty. But due to the unrelenting spirits of our pioneer faculty and administra-tion, the program has survived the downfall.

Today the BS Architecture Program has steadily risen from its downfalls and pit-falls. In fact in 2005, the first batch of aspir-ing architects have made a 100 % passing rate in its first take. The program has produced graduates which have contributed both to the architectural profession and in the country’s nation building.

Looking back it can be said that the future of UP Mindanao’s BS Architecture Program is something that has been built from the past but still is cognizant to the challenges of the future.

After a decade of success, the faculty and students would like to give its full saluta-tion to all people who have been part of this great endeavor and great sacrifices.

To the graduates our warmest con-gratulations to all of you and with deepest hope that you will one day return and give your service to the university and continually support the program.

Once again MABUHAY ANG PRO-GRAMA NG ARKITEKTURA!!!

Sincerely.

Warmest Greetings and Congratu-lations to the BS Architecture Program of UP Mindanao on its 10th year Anniversary Celebration.

Celebrations, indeed are important part of our individual and corporate existence. These are opportunities to reflect on the past, the present and the future. This year’s theme: PRIDE IN THE PAST; POWER OF THE PRESENT; PROMISE FOR THE FUTURE captures the essence of celebration. We look back with jubilation; enjoy the pres-ent with enthusiasm; and look forward with anticipation.

As we celebrate 10 years of existence in UP Mindanao, let us remember with gratitude the sacrifices of the pioneers and let the pursuit of excellence continue to be the hallmark of each “ARKI” student.

In behalf of the Architecture Student Council Officers and all the BS Architecture Students of UP Mindanao, I would like to convey our thanks and congratulations to all the pioneers and prime-movers of the BS Architecture Program in UP Mindanao. Your dedication and perseverance helped the program to continue and to reach 10 years. A decade of molding lives and developing skills, with 6 licensed Architects contributed to our country is a great achievement. Indeed, we are grateful for the opportunity of quality educa-tion and honored to be part of this celebra-tion.

At first, there were only two univer-sities offering BS Architecture in Davao City, however, due to the

growing demand of students wanting to take up Architecture and the need to cre-ate quality education, the University of the Philippines Mindanao as the Southern Mindanao’s premiere University opted to put up the Bachelor of Science in Archi-tecture Program. In 1996, U.P. College of Architecture (UPCA), under the Dean-ship of Prof. Honrado Fernandez initiated the institution of the B.S. Architecture program. Thus, in the year 1999, U.P. Mindanao was able to implement its own B. S. Architecture program, which was the same as that of the UPCA in Diliman.

In June 1999, the BS Architecture Pro-gram had its pioneering batch consisting of only twelve students. The program ini-tially had only one faculty during the first semester in the person of Arch. Rowena Santos, followed by Arch. Francis Gerard Hidalgo during the second semester. The first classrooms of the program were tem-porarily housed at the Philippine Coco-nut Authority Administration Building, where the Boy’s Dormitory was also locat-ed. Back then, the College of Science and Mathematics was the only building in the

University, which served as classrooms for all the other courses offered by the univer-sity. The Administration building was still being constructed that time.

In the traditional commemoration of the Freshmen Night in the University of the Philippines, Oliver Abatol and Antonietta Abrea were the first BS Architecture Isko and Iska representatives for the Freshmen Night ’99 held at Elias B. Lopes Hall Girls’ Dormitory. In December of the same year, the University celebrated another event, the Parolan ‘99, which showcases the dif-ferent Lantern Designs of each program and admin offices. During this event the BS Architecture won the Best Presentation of Parol, held at UP Mindanao Ladislawa Campus. Presently, the Parolan is known as Kasadya.

The toughest challenge of the program was during the administration of then UP President Dr. Francisco Nemenzo and UP Mindanao Chancellor Dr. Ricardo de Un-gria. The BS Architecture program was proposed to be abolished, together with the BS Economics. The main reason were the Program’s insufficient core faculty to handle the courses of the program and replication of the program in other Uni-

versities in Southern Mindanao. But the faculty members, together with College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Teresita Guillen, were successful in prov-ing its worth and won the fight. Thus, the program was retained. In 2000, Arch. Eric-son Europa, Arch. Eden Sorupia and Arch. Jose Joaquin Mendoza joined the roster of the faculty members of the program. They were among the pioneer teachers to handle the second batch of BS Architecture stu-dents.

In 2001, Arch. Jerry Ang joined in the pro-gram and handled the rendering courses. In the same year Arch. Santos-Delgado conducted a research on the architectural landmarks of Davao City, which was pre-sented at SM Entertainment Plaza. Arch. Isidoro R. Malaque III, during this same year also became a valuable addition in the roster of faculty. The program has con-tinually grown which also took in Arch. Ligaya Rose R. Namocatcat.

In the academic year of 2003, the first the-sis batch was handled by Prof. Isidoro R. Malaque. In the same year Arch. Jean Ma-rie V. Juanga and Arch. Elaine delos Santos became part of the roster of faculty and also became member of the thesis panel. Later this year Engr Melchor Sirilan was hired by the program to handle courses on structural design. By the end of the Academic Year 2003-2004, the program produced its first two graduates, Jee Rose Calderon and Marnielle Nacorda.

In December 2004, the 1st ARQuiz orga-nized by the UAP Davao Chapter was held at the NCCC Mall. There were three Uni-versities vying for the first place namely, University of Mindanao, Ateneo de Davao University and UP Mindanao. In the final rounds ADDU and UP Mindanao had a close fight until finallyUP Mindanao Ar-chitecture students won the 1st place re-resented by Mary Grace Sy, Jose Antonio Emmanuel Santos, Ronald John Dizon and Gian Derek Flores. RYseven students marched down the aisle to claim their well-deserved diplomas. They were the second batch of graduates from the program.

The seventh batch, comprising 23 students, won the first prize on the Building Deco-ration Contest during their freshmen year. They were assigned to decorate the CHSS wing of the Administration Building with Christmas decorations for Kasadya 2005. During that academic year also, BS Archi-tecture won the second place in the 2nd ARQuiz held at SM City Entertainment Plaza. The third batch of graduates was also produced at the end of AY 2005-2006.

The College of Science and Mathematics Building served as the house for the draft-ing rooms of the BS Architecture Program during those years. Two rooms were pro-vided for the basic drafting subjects of the program. But in 2006, the drafting rooms were relocated in the newly constructed CHSS wing. And the first to use the facili-ties was the batch 2006-2007 which was the eighth batch of students of the pro-gram. The program reclaimed its place as the champion during the 3rd ARQuiz held at University of Mindanao Gymnasium.

In 2006, Arch. Tricia Leigh Sardinia and Prof. Jean Marie T. Villamor-Juanga have joined the roster as full-time faculty mem-bers. In late 2007 Arch. Sardinia opted to leave the University for greener pastures and was later replaced by Arch. Jewelyn Dureza who stayed in the program for one semester. On the other hand in the later part of the year, Prof. Juanga remained and became the Program Coordinator in lieu of Arch. Ligaya Rose Namocatcat.

And in July 2007, UP Mindanao received a 100% passing rate in the Architecture Licensure Board Examination at first strike. The program produced its first four architects namely Oliver O. Abatol, Ryan C. Songcayauon, Lea Angela B. Lee and Mary Grace T. Sy. Later within the year Arch. Ryan C. Songcayauon, became a fac-ulty of the program.

In November 2007, BS Architecture to-gether with BA Communication Arts students headed by Arch. Ligaya Rose Namocatcat, in cooperation with Na-

tional Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) and Department of Tourism XI, documented the Kalimudan 2007 Exposition of Vernacular Architecture of the Indigenous People of Mindanao held at Magsaysay Park, Davao City. A month later, the UPMin Architecture students brought home the 2nd and 3rd places dur-ing the 4th ARQuiz held at Garden Oasis.

BS Architecture pro-duced its “centennial batch” along with the Centennial celebration of the UP system in 2008, which was also the tenth batch of archi-tecture students. During that time, the faculty and students agreed to unite the two existing architecture organi-zations, UAPSA and JPIA, creating the UP Mindanao Architecture Student Council (UP Min ASC).

The UP Min ASC was created as a course based organization of the BS Architecture. It was lead by it first President Desiree Cabiles, with Prof. Jean Marie T. Villamor-Juanga as adviser, with the aim of empowering the students to develop their skills and talents and at the same time help augment the programs need. The first major proj-ect organized by ASC was the TINUKIB Scale Model Design Workshop and Com-petition in November 29 to December 1, 2008.

As an annual tradition, UPMin architec-ture students showed their support in the National Architecture Week held during 1st week of December by participating in various activities such as the In-Situ Ren-dering Competition, architectural lectures and ARQuiz ’08. Again, the students were triumphant in the ARQuiz held at UM Matina Campus Auditorium, bagging the 1st and 2nd places, under coach Arch. Ryan Songcayauon.

And just recently, the first TABANOG Kite Making and Flying Competition held

at the UPMin Soccer Field last March 14, 2009. The event was indeed a success.

Presently, the program is under the CHSS direction of Dean Ma. Araceli Dans-Lee and Humanities Department Chair Prof. Antonino S. de Veyra. The core faculty of the program is composed of seven, with five full-time faculty members and two lectur-

ers. Among the full-time faculty members are Prof. Isidoro R. Malaque III, who hap-pens to be the Campus Architect of UP Mindanao, Arch. Ellen Noemi Dorado, former UAP Kadayawan President, Arch. Ericson P. Europa, current NAMPAP president, Engr. Isaac Muncada and Prof. Jean Marie T. Villamor Juanga as current head of the BS Architecture Program. The two lecturers are Arch. Ryan Songcayauon and Arch. Noel Punay, both of which are active members of UAP Davao.

Recently, under the leadership of Dean Maria Araceli Dans Lee and with Prof. Jean Marie Villamor-Juanga as Program Head, the proposed curriculum revision of the BS Architecture Program has already been approved up to the University Coun-cil level. The curriculum is now on its way to its approval by the UP system Board. Hopefully, the program is on its way in be-coming a department, keeping our fingers crossed.

A ll four examinees from the second batch of BS Architecture graduates of the University of the Philippines

in Mindanao passed the Licensure Exami-nation held last month.

Oliver O. Abatol, Lea Angela B. Lee, Ryan C. Songcayauon, and Mary Grace T. Sy are four of the 467 passers out of 1,141 ex-aminees who took the exam given by the Board of Architecture in Manila.

The announcement of the successful exam-inees and the top performing schools was released by the Professional Regulation Commission on July 20.

All four were part of the second batch of Architecture graduates who finished in April 2005.

The fours were the only UP Mindanao graduates who took last month’s exam, giv-ing the young Universtiy a 100% passing

rate. They were all first-time examinees.

Aside from PRC registration, the new ar-chitects will also need to register for mem-bership with the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP).

The oath-taking ceremony of the success-ful examinees is set on August 18 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel at the CCP Complex in Pasay City.(This article was published in Sunstar Davao and Mindanao times last August 1, 2008)

Done twice a year, activity has been a tradition of the former JPIA organization. The ASC decided to continue the said activ-ity. Through the semester, it is inevitable, much to the cha-grin of the teachers and some students, the drafting tables become “draft sheets”. Therefore to promote proper care and the much needed appreciation for these facilities, the ASC lets the students clean the drafting boards themselves. You can never imagine the happy faces you get after the once smudged tables become sparkling white.

In March 2008, the BS Architecture faculty and students decided to cre-

ate a course-based organization that will empower the students to develop their talents and skills to their fullest potential and in line with their inter-ests. Besides the empowerment of the students the organization also aims to help in the needs of the BS Architec-ture Program.

The pioneering members of the coun-cil had its election in June 2008. The pioneer officers were as follows: Presi-dent Desiree Cabiles, Vice President Richelle Saturinas, Secretary Katrina Quiblat. Treasurer Caryn Ressurrec-cion, Auditor Mykel Edrian Barcena and PIO Jessamine Kuh Fortuna. The board members were Antoneth Aya-ton and Pamela Bao. Prof. Jean Marie T. Villamor-Juanga became its first ad-viser and Arch. Ligaya Rose Namocat-cat as its co-adviser.

Following its objectives the organi-zation launched its very first major project, the TINUKIB Scale Model Design Workshop and Competition, which aimed to teach high school stu-dents in designing and constructing scale models, under the mentorship of senior and fifth year Architecture students. The workshop have both promoted the program and at the same time develop the confidence of the stu-dent mentors.

In the aim of developing the creativ-ity of the students the UP Min ASC initiated “TABANOG”,the first Kite Flying and Design Competition in UP Mindanao. The event was successfully implemented. Both TINUKIB and TABANOG were planned to become a regular activity of the students.

This is yet just the start of ASC’s service to the BS Architecture Program…….

TINUKIB 2008

The Architecture Student Council (ASC) of the University of the Philippines in Mindanao held the

first Tinukib Model Design Workshop and Competition at the university’s Col-lege of Humanities and Social Sciences Building last November 29, 2008. The activity’s goal is to help illustrate the students’ academic excellence in the field of arts and sciences.

The participants of the event were third year and fourth year high school students from the Holy Child School of Davao High School in Mintal, the Ford Acad-emy of the Arts Incorporated, the Philip-pine Science High School, and the Mintal Comprehensive High School.

The activity aims to do the following: 1) to promote the students’ creativity and ar-tistic imagination; 2) to motivate their in-terest as young designers; 3) to help them learn about design and three-dimensional

(3D) model making; and 4) to inform and expose them in some aspects of the field; and 5) to encourage them to pursue excel-lence in the field of arts and design.

The workshop was divided into three cat-egories: Elements of Architectural Design and Indigenous Architecture; Scale and Proportion, Architectural Drafting and Plan Interpretation; and Presentation Techniques: Monochromatic and Color Rendering. They were taught and facili-tated by Abdul Malik Diamla, Reane April Rodrigo, Alexis Ken Cartajenas, Nassro-din Sapto Dan Jezreel Orendain, and Bi-anca Merra Lagunda, all senior Architec-ture students from the university.

“The activity gave me new ideas,” said Cecille Sumaygaysay, a fourth year stu-dent from Mintal Comprehensive High School. “It allowed me to become more creative in my craft.” The workshops helped the students pre-pare for the contest which was followed

after. Each group was given a design prob-lem. As an application, the students were asked to make a scale model of a music room.

“I learned a lot from the workshop,” said Czar Cyrill, a third year student from the Mintal Comprehensive High School. “I will incorporate what I’ve learned in my future endeavors.”

The entries were submitted last December 1. The winners will be announced during the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Davao Chapter’s Defining Spaces on March 28, 2009 from 3 to 6 pm at SM City Davao.

The activity was part of the annual cele-bration of the 37th Nationwide Architec-ture Week with this year’s theme: “Ating TaNAWin: Arkitektong Pilipino.”

How to Pass:ARKIBOARDEXAM1 Rewrite your notes until such time you’re rewriting it without looking at the notes you have previously rewrit-ten. 2 Translate the National Building Code, Fire Code, Plumbing Code, and any other Codes into drawings. We love to look at drawings compared to words! Right? 3 You can write important notes for you to memorize/familiarize on in-dex cards where it is handy or even on Manila papers where you can read them in any place of your room. 4 Do not study the whole day or the whole week straight! It’s a suicide! Have time to visit the malls, parks or just hang out with your friends. Your goal is to pass the board, not to enter a mental facility after. 5 If you’re in the mall or at park walk-ing, think of the things you have pre-viously studied like the famous ar-chitects and the buildings they have designed, or the colors of different pipes and their uses or the different electrical wires. (Tip no. 5 cancels tip no. 4 haha) 6 Take Vitamins. You don’t want to be sick during the exam. 7 Tell your family, your friends or of-ficemate never to call or text you dur-ing the review. They are obstructions! Tell them that you will call or text them first or tell them to do so after the exam. 8 Pray if you believe in God. If you don’t, then call on all the names of the famous architects. At least you’re still studying! 9 Think positive! Don’t aim just to pass the exam. Your goal is top it! ha-haha… 10 During the drafting exam day, go to the toilet. And as you go back to the room, look at the drawings of the other examiners. Sit back and tell yourself: “My drafting is better than her.” or “My perspective is bigger and better than him.” Haha!

ARKI LIFE (?)

Arki life is challenging. Architecture is such a demanding course. It needs time and concentration. It deprives

you of sleep, food and worst, MONEY! The plates and models bug you with outmost.

I’m a first year...first impression on the course? HARD. NEEDS DRAWING & RENDERING SKILLS/TALENTS. SLEEPLESS NIGHTS. PROFUSE.

After two semesters, what can I say? IT’S UNEASY. NEEDS PERSEVERANCE AND PATIENCE. About the rendering

skills? WELL, the course teaches you, so no need to bugged about it. SLEEPLESS nights, true enough! Profuse? The course needs money, bundles of money! But, on the other side of the coin, the course is fun. The friendship you get is worth a trea-sure most especially in times of difficulties. Classes are boring but lessons are interesting. Teachers could get demanding and inspiring. I think much has been said.

So, to sum it all up, ARKI LIFE IS A ROLL-ER COASTER RIDE.

(FUTURE) ARCHT. KD SUAM

BAKIT KA NAG-ARKI?This is the most (in)famous question an upper-class asks a freshie. Through time, we’ve heard almost all types of answers: witty, clueless, wise and witless. So, we’ve asked the ARKI students once again and see if their answers changed. Here they are...

BEST THESES...and counting

These are the five best theses in five different years UP Mindanao’s BS Architecture Program has produced. This is just the beginning. The program promises to bring more exceptional thesis in the years to come. The BS Architecture faculty is proud to present these projects.

The pressure is on for the succeeding batches. 5

ABSTRACT

In creating low impact development, it is always important to consider sensitivity to the site. It is also rare that these developments are able to in-form the user of the environment’s importance. The book discusses how archtiecture can be used to promote the understanding of the environ-ment.

The problem on the current path of development is the anthropocentric view in creatin space, it is therefore appropriate to use nature as the basis to create space within its surroundings. This was done by assigning the components of sustainable

development to the needed architectural experi-ence in order to achieve an understanding of the environment which would promote biodiversity conservation.

Bats are one of the least favored in the recovery of endangered species- their habitat becoming an easy target of locals for food. With the lack of public awareness, there would only be continu-ous destruction cause on these bats. Therefore, it is important for the locals to undestand and ap-preciate them in order to live harmoniously and attain sustainability between both parties.

The development of the site surrounding the

bats’ habitat as a Conservation Park invites the oppurtunity for an architectural space to become more responsive. By means of biodiversity con-servation as the aim and architectural experience addressing sustainable development as the tool to attain the said aim, then the process is being fulfilled.

The archtiectural experience was defined by as-sessing the public’s perception and preference, as the needed market (Economic) and informa-tion (Social) in sustainable development. This experience is then supplemented by consdiere-ing the environment, thus attending ti the three components of sustainable development.

ABSTRACT

Imagine Mindanao Indigenous dance and rituals in a structure; imagine Mindanao indigenous dance and rituals as a structure. This is the story that this the-sis entitled, “Contextualizing Indigenous Dance and Rituals in a Mindanao Performing Arts Complex” seeks to tell by recognizing Mindanao Indigenous dance choreography. As Agnes Locsin, a famous choreographer who coined the term Neo-ethnic said, “a unique style of Mindanao Indigenous dance choreography only found in Mindanao has yet to be recognized. But this unique character has not been recognized yet because little research has been made in the realm on how they are performed. In fact, they are even misuse by many choreographers locally leading to the problem of this research that there is a need for an accurate definition of Mindanao Indigenous Dance and rituals and a need for an iconic archetype as an area for documentation and representation. These problems framed the objectives of this thesis, which are to accurately and correctly contextualize Mindanao Indigenous Dance and Rituals through a scientific method using Labanotations, a mathemat-ical system of analyzing movements and to integrate the scientific contextualization in a Mindanao Per-forming Arts complex. This thesis wrapped around three major theories which are Dance as a language, notations of the lan-guage of dance and notation in relation to architec-tural elements of a performing arts complex. These theories support the concept, which is “Architecture conceived from dance movements” which was

achieved through a framework of concept starting from the core concept, which is the Mindanao in-digenous dance and rituals. Then to the indigenous dance movement analysis using Labanotation. The movement analysis is categorized into three, the verbs, nouns and adverbs. The movement analysis jumpstarted the methodology in which five major Mindanao Indigenous Dances catregorized accord-ing to Pangalay (Sulu), a wedding Dance , Lunsay, a Game Dances , Bagobo, a Courtship Dance , Dugso Talaandig Tribe (Bukidnon), a Ritual Dance, B’lit Bi-laan, a Mimetic Dance, and Yakan, an Occupational Dance. These five dances where notated by looking first hand at Indigenous performers and also their video archives. The video was then segmented into three corresponding to the three categories of movement; verb which means movement from one place to another giving the Plan of the dances, nouns which means movement done in place giving eleva-tion and the adverb which means movement done away from the ground or aerial movements creating the volume of the dance. Categories of movement analysis are called kinesthetic spaces and they can be combined into a space, which corresponds to a perspective. The kinesthetic spaces are architectural elements formed in the context of dance movements. In order to translate them into the architectural elements of a performing arts complex, integration with ar-chitectural standard, which was achieved using the space analysis, lighting design considerations and acoustical design considerations was made. After all important factors where considered, the study showed that in terms of steps, the dances predominantly have small lengths of step ranging

from 1.6 ft to 1.5 ft and are predominantly done through mincing. Similarly, in terms of leg and arm gestures degree of flexion, the dances have fewer extensions and are more on flexes even in the hand gestures. In addition, the change in vertical move-ment patterns is dominant in the dances and there degrees of flexion range from 1 degree to 5 degrees indicating more obviously that dances are indeed very detailed in terms of the movements. In terms of recommendation for design, the performance ar-eas for the dances should be intimate ranging from 139.8 sq.m to 621 sq.m and areas ranging from 15 sq.m to 37 sq.m. In terms of acoustical consideration, the instru-ments and the type of accompaniments of the danc-es ranged from 90 -120 and 70-90 decibels because of the areas with which they were performed and their specific Reverberation Time are classified into two ranging from Rt are 0.6 - 0.8 and 0.4 – 0.6 re-spectively requiring optimum listening capacity for the dances. In addition, the lighting requirements of the dances ranged from 2500 to 3000 Color Temperature. In terms of system of references of the dances, they differ in most cases but are dependent to the loca-tion of the instruments. In creating Mindanao Indigenous dance and rituals in and as a structure, all of the data collected, which has contextualized the dances, should be taken into consideration. This way, the so-called Mindanao at-mosphere can be truly attained in theater making the unique character of the gongs and kulintang in Mindanao truly preserved even in a thousand life-times.

ABSTRACT

Human beings are teritorial in nature. There is always a cer-tain amount of distance that is maintained when dealing with other people, much like a bubble surrounding each person. Usually done unconsciously, this personal space determined how big the “bubble” each person has. Edward T. Hall formulated categories on these distances.

Several factor such asage, gender, seating arrangementm, degree of relationship and anthrogpometrics were used in the study. it was found out that they contribute greatly on how near or far the interpersonal distance of someonw is.

Determining an elderly interpersonal distance with simple observation is possible. Observations, informal interviews and phot documentation were some of the methods ap-plied to verify factors that affect these distances. After thor-ough observations and testing of hypothesis, a new range of interpersonal distances for the elderly is concluded.

Guidelines for non-medical health care facility for the el-derly are put together. The new interpersonal distance range is applied on it to help imporve physical comfort and communication among them.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study is to: identify the similarities and the differnces of the Igorot Architecture in Bukidnon and in the Mountain Province; determine and analyze the factors in fluencing the Igorot Architecture in Bukidnon and; to suggst possible architectural concepts that can be contributed to the existing Igorot Architecture in Bukidon.

Thirty Igorot respoendent from Bontoc and Kankana-ey ethno-linguistic groups were interviewed. Snowball sm-plaing was used in the selectiion of the respondents. teh questionnaire included items intended to produce data in identifying the similarities and differenced of the Igorot Ar-chitecture in Bukidnon and Mountain Province and analyz-ing the factors that inlfuence the differences of the Igorot Architecture in Bukidnons from its origin.

Findings of the study showed that the basic features of Igorot Architecture in Bukidnon and Mountain Province are manifested in teh sturdiness and massiveness of their houses. The climate and geodraphical setting, availability of materials in the locality and cultural factors influence the architectural character of Igorot houses in Bukidnon.

ABSTRACT

There are approximately 1,000,000 women pregnant at one time. In Davao City alone, there are approximately 33,000 pregnant women from January to December 2005. The magnitude of the population is a crucial concern in the provision for health, safety, sanitation, and hygiene.

Pregnancy is a state of becoming- an unborn baby is becoming a person capable of life outside the safe, protecitve and totally suf-ficient nevironment of the mother’s womb, and a man and woman becoming parent. Pregnanyc is a positive growth experience for most expectant parents. It is time to draw on or develop a support system, to assess one’s lifestyle and make changes if necessary to ensure optimal health.

This study aims to uplift and assist in the pro-vision of good health through specifying and knowing measures of comfort, safety and

convenience for the pregnant mother. these measures include material comfort, physio-logical comfort, bio-mechanical comfort and technological comfort but as an emphasis, the study focused on structural antrhopo-metrics of pregnant women.

A total of thirty-three (33) body measure-ments are obtained from 120 pregnant wom-en, 40 in each trimester. Also, to distinguish user responses to the external environe-ment, motion study, study of reach, activity analysis and present condition assessment were performed.

Considerable difference in measurements signified the apparent changes in the body of the pregnant woman. Measurements, such as weight anfd width of abdomen show the most effect of the pregnancy condition. The different user needs, preferences and perceptions on their environment were re-flected in the recommendations for spatial provision, furniture design, equipment pro-

vision, activity management and material specification.

The pregnancy experience is defined by re-lationships, finances, physique, emotionm responsibilty, time and environment. Howev-er, there is now universal agreement among medical professionals or the geenral public on the single best, safest, and most comfort-able way to experience preganancy. But to a great extent, the kind of pregnancy experi-ence a woman could have will largely depend on the care and provisions available.

The results were used to formulate guide-lines for the design of a maternity hospital. This facility was aimed at providing comfort through the application of three (3) interven-tions namely; education, physical and medi-cal interventions. This integrative approach aim at holistically at holistically, address the needs of pregnant women for comfort. The project located along J.P Cabaguio Avenue, fronting the Davao Medical Center.

In 1996, U.P. Mindanao was assisted by the U.P. College of Archi-tecture in Diliman (UPCAD) in initiating a B.S. Architecture curricular program by allowing the latter’s program to be adopted.

Thus, in June 1999, U.P. Mindanao was able to implement its own B. S. Architecture program (UPMBSAP) which was the same as that of the UPCAD.

Three years later, in 2002, UPCAD instituted major revisions in its program. However, the UPMBSAP underwent only minor revisions in 2002 and 2003, basically due to the institution of RGEP courses. No longer at par with each other, major revisions are now proposed for the UPMBSAP.

The faculty of the UPMBSAP began its comprehensive review of the program in 2006. This review included consultations and interviews with practitioners and graduates of the program to identify and affirm the changing industry needs and developments in order for the UP-MBSAP to transform traditional competency standards into excellent architecture education.

More vital however was the participation of the faculty of the UP-MBSAP in a three-day workshop conducted by the UPCAD Center of Excellence for Architecture. The workshop was aimed at assisting UPMBSAP in developing its current curriculum, syllabi and teaching methods.

Thus, the results of the comprehensive review of the UPMBSAP are the following proposed curricular revisions. In sum, these proposed revisions are rooted in two major bases: (1) the clustering of Archi-tecture courses within a framework used in the profession’s licensure board examinations and (2) Architecture’s response to specific Mind-anao needs.

These proposed revisions will undoubtedly position the UPMBSAP in the forefront of architectural development in Mindanao as its invaluable contribution to nation building.

PROGRAM GOALSIt is noteworthy to reiterate at this point the goals of the UPMBSAP. At the end of the program, the student should be able to:

1. Master comprehensive architectural knowledge, both in theory and practice, respecting human and cultural dispositions;

2. Apply the analytical and scientific processes in architectural design that are relevant to the socio-economic make-up of the users, with the goal of understanding the relationship between man and his environ-ment;

3. Promote academic excellence in Architecture by being receptive to new ideas and knowledge through systematic research, both creative and scientific;

4. Direct and address architecture education to address design issues peculiar to Mindanao and contributing to nation building;

5. Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency of skills in the sub-technical level of the building industry and architectural profession, in accordance with legal codes and regulations as well as with the scope of practice of architecture; and

Articulate the interplay of built-forms that shape people’s habitat and environment so that they do not become detrimental to the cultural heritage and aspirations of the Filipino.
