{message}AY 2009-2010 is nearing its end and like every end of an academic year, we always try to
reevaluate ourselves on how well or how bad we performed in our acads. It is not only that
we get to check our grades or contemplate on how we performed academic-related duties but
it is more of how we think of ourselves ending another academic year and anticipating the
next level of another year of schooling and all. For the graduating students, you cannot take
away the excitement and at the same time the realization of completely ending another
chapter of your life.
This academic year, the Academic Affairs Committee tried its best to monitor
examination schedules of the members. It is part of our objective to be aware of academic-
related activities of the members like exams because in this way we could be aware of each
members occupied days. It is also to give us the chance to motivate members to do well ontheir examinations. Also, as part of this promotion of academic wellness, we are continuously
working on rebuilding the CURSOR Library. By the end of this year, we really hope that the
locker for books in our tambayan will not only serve as reservoir of unusable books but a
library that could be used by each member and really help them on their studies as much as
possible (Go Acad Interns!). This year as well, we had successfully hosted a CS11/ES26 tutorial
for freshmen and non-CS students taking up these programming-related subjects.
On the other hand, academic wellness is only a small part of our committees job. It really
is the annual CURSOR events and other special projects that take up most of our time andenergy. This year, we are really grateful for holding two very fruitful ACLEs (Alternative
Classroom Learning Experience): first, last semesters film showing ofPirates of the Silicon
Valley, and last January, the film showing ofUp and Pixars Animated Short Films. We are
also thankful to those who attended the TechnoTalks and helped us out on organizing the
inter-high school Junior Programming Conference 2009, inter-collegiate Java Cup, and
Quizzardry. Actually, this year we are reviving CURSOR Student Excellence Award (CSEA) for
the member that is not only academically proficient but also an active and responsible
member of the organizationone who can balance his/her acads and CURSOR life at the
same time.
Next school year, I really hope that these kinds of events will not be taken for granted by
each member, whether it is for their academic wellness or for the organizations well-being.
But just a reminder: like what Mark Twain said, dont let schooling interfere with your
education.
/Josh Lagrimas, Outgoing Academic Affairs Committee Head

CURSOR ELECTIONS
CURSOR members once again exercised their
right to be heard and their right to vote for the
next Executive Committee as everyone actively
participated during this year's electoral period.
The Electoral Committee released the list of
members eligible for office on Feb 9, whichwas then followed by the nominations on Feb
16-17.
Filing of candidacy lasted until Feb 26, with
three candidates for Presidency and one for
each of the other committees except for Acad.
Filing for that position was extended. The list
of candidates was finally completed on Feb 28.
The Miting de Avance took place on Mar 3 in
Melchor Hall, where the candidates presented
their plans of action should they be elected for
office. It was, as always, interesting to see their
plans and watch them answer on-the-spot
questions from the live audience.
Finally, members flocked the tambayan on
Mar 9-10 for the election proper. Turnout was
good, with a total of 114 votes. These were
immediately tallied and the results released in
the evening of Mar 10.
The Electoral Committee 2010 was composed
of Jhie Respino (Chairman), Chris Agupitan,
Joan Bagunu, Patrick Consunji, Leah Lugtu,
Ryan Limlingan, and Tin Salonga.

{news features}INVADING LAGUNA. This semester's Sexy Semender c/o the new Executive
Committee was held on April 9-10 at Horizon View Hotel in Los Baos, Laguna. It
was also the site for a bunch of other notable events: Induction Rites, Turnover
Ceremonies, and the announcement of the CSEA winner.
THE EPITOME. A collaborative project between Mem and Acad, the CURSOR
Student Excellence Award (CSEA) promotes excellence not only as a student but
also as a member of the organization. After an extensive nomination and
deliberation process, this year's CSEA Recipient is Sarah Rigodon! Congrats!
I AM CURSOR. March 19 marked the finals night for the EngineeringOrganization Excellence Awards held at the Engineering Theater. It is an annual
event of ARISE and is also one of the most anticipated events by many
Engineering organizations. CURSOR has been a consistent finalist in this event,
proving to everyone that being Sexy never goes out of style.
CURSOR PARTNERS WITH UP EdCirc. With the initiative of the UP EdCirc,
CURSOR took part in this years Mulat Aklat: a book drive campaign for the young
learners. The campaign was headed by new CURSOR member, Stephen Ko.Masasabi kong successful ang outcome dahil nalampasan ng CURSOR ang
target of 43 books, Stephen remarked. By estimation, CURSOR managed to
collect and donate 60+ books to the host organization. Thanks sa mga apps. Sila
mostly ang nagbigay ng book, Stephen added. This event allowed CURSOR to
open a new world to the kids by sharing to them different kinds of books; each
having its own story to tell. Only their imagination will be their limit.
RETRO ENGG. In line with the College ofEngineerings Centennial Celebration,
everyone came together to celebrate Retro Engg Week. There was theparade/motorcade on February 15, and CURSOR was there with Ton, Miss
CURSOR 2009, as muse. February 19 saw the culmination with Retro Engg Week
Talent Night, featuring performances faculty, alumni, and students, including
CURSORs very own Awitaners.
KIDS AT HEART. CURSOR's latest ACLE offering, The Wilderness Must Be
Explored!, may possibly be the organization's most attended ACLE to date. On
January 28, students from different colleges hiked all the way up AECH to watch
a series of Pixar short flicks and a film showing of the movie Up.

{literary features}Last January 29, 2010 (Friday) the UP CURSOR applicants, APPostles,
held their Talents Night at the Balay Kalinaw. The event started at 6PM
and ended at 9PM. With the theme Glee, the APPostles showcased
their talents in the musical area, featuring various dance and song
numbers, as well as other interesting talents.
The first performers were Cassie, Cath, Ru, Dette and Van, who
danced to a medley of Chocolate Love by SNSD, Ai no Imi wo Oshiete
by W (Double You), and a Philippine Folk Dance. Next was DJ with her
Doble Kara performance of Nananaginip ng Gising. Her performance
kept the audience entertained. She was also a contender for the Best
Talent award. Next up was a duet from Anton and Nicole. They sangSomebody to Love by Queen. This was followed by, Tine, JD, CJ, Chel
and Nica who were the Spice Girls of the night dancing Stop Right Now.
Next was a collaboration between JR and Patrick with the song Harana
by Parokya ni Edgar, JR singing the vocals while Patrick playing the
guitar. Following them was another song number from Ken. He sang
Fireflies by Owl City while playing the guitar. Another SNSD group
followed. Nicole, DJ, Danielle, Apryll and Hebs danced to the upbeat
song, Gee. The next performer was Ryan Arana, voted the Best Talent
for the night. He wowed the audience with his beautiful rendition ofSway by Michael Buble. Truly, his voice deserves the award! Next up, a
contrast to the previous song numbers, was Rye with a spectacular
freestyle dance. Another KPOP group composed of Eds, Ace, Vin, Joel
and Ryan Caro danced Ring Ding Dong by Shinee. They surprised the
audience with their freestyle moves in the middle of their
performance. Next was Jared with a unique performance. He hula-
hooped while singing on stage! Lastly, Ace, again, performed on stage.
This time, he held a magic show with audience participation from
chosen CURSOR members.
Their Finale, the Batch Talent, was the APPostles rendition of Dont
Stop Believing from Glee (but originally performed by Journey)
wherein the applicants were dressed uniformly in red. In the middle of
the performance, the applicants gave a gift to their respective bytes, as
a thank you for taking care of them during the application process.
Sana sa memcom nalang kayo sumipsip, commented a member with
a laugh. But it was all-smiles as the APPostles delivered the final notes
of their performance, with everybody else applauding.
The night ended with JM, the Membership Committee Head, delivering
a speech to the applicants, and announcing who won Best Talent.
Sana wala na mag-defer. Keep up the application period! JM said.
Then, the applicants cheered, overjoyed upon completing their Talents
Night. Kahit isang week lang nag-practice at super nakakapagod at
nakakastress, sobrang fulfilling nung natapos na! said an applicant.
APPOSTLES!!! Dontstop believeing! Hold on to that feeling!

Valentines Day may be long behind us,but who says we cant keep on talking about love??
Its February once again and what comes to
your mind when its February? Valentines
Day! For centuries, people have celebrated
Valentine's Day. Though it may have
originated as an ancient Roman feast, it
eventually came to be associated with a
Roman Catholic feast day on February 14th to
honor two Roman martyrs. Both of these
were called St. Valentine.
So this February means malls and parks
getting crowded by couples hanging around,
dating or strolling together. For some people,
Valentines means dates, chocolates and
roses. But I guess we are being too shallow by
what we think ofValentines. Love should be
expressed or shown not just this day or this
month. It should be expressed in any day.
This reminds me of a bible verse, 1
Corinthians 4:13, Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not
proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is
not easily angered, it keeps no record ofwrongs. Love does not delight in evil but
rejoices with the truth. It always protects,
always trusts, always hopes, always
perseveres. Love never fails. Like what they
said, love conquers all.
/Catherine Sardona
This is going to be the seventh time that I've decided to rewrite this article from the top. I findit strange that a wordsmith such as myself can't seem to be able to express what it is he wants
to say. Such is the nature of love; it is that feeling that defies words and definitions as if it has
a mind of its own and perhaps indeed it does. I've often written about love in my poems and it
is one of the most beautiful things to write about because it captures so much of human
experience and emotions that the thought of it is enough to drive a person mad with ecstasy
or despair. I asked myself if I was the right person to write about love since I've never entered
a relationship before. It is then I realized how love goes beyond relationships, goes beyond
labels and meaning. I realized that love is indeed undefinable.
Love transcends the different layers of human emotions, it permeates through the different
phases of human experience. It's something that's not easy to write about because it's
different for everyone and to generalize would do it great injustice. Such a perfect idea need
not be caged in imperfect words. Love is something that should be experienced in order to be
understood and even then it is only that experience that you'll understand. For me, it is like
poetry which is not meant to be simply read but rather it invites the reader to be completely
immersed in its every aspect, drowning in that faint yet powerful sensory journey. Therefore,
I cannot write about love in general; I can only write about my love and nothing else but that.

ON
{literary features}It seems strange that I'm having trouble writing this article as it would seem
strange that after eight months, I'm still having trouble moving on. This is
probably because I dislike that phrase: 'moving on'. For me it is the anti-
thesis of love because in truth where can you move on from love. One may
say that we don't move on from love but rather we move on from the
object of our love. To that I say: Is it possible to separate the one we love
from love itself?. I say this because as I was writing about love, deep inside
I knew that I'm writing about a single person and no longer the idea in
general. At this point I'd like to admit that there were many before whom I
loved and I've moved on from those experiences albeit with great struggle.
Time has been a forceful agent of this phenomenon and it would take a
great love to win against Chronos, itself. How I wish I'm capable of suchlove; of being able to embrace the excruciating pain of loneliness (although
we are never alone); of being able to spurn the compromises that time sets
before us. After all, compromise is the enemy of desire which is at the very
essence of love. Love doesn't compromise, it doesn't say: Pwede na 'to
and thus when we learn to compromise our love dies down and thus it can
be rebuilt anew. This is not necessarily a good or bad thing but it has
become a necessity in the world we live in; that same world that sought to
define the undefinable.
Love is stubborn that way and yet even in its most painful form, love
remains beautiful and alluring if one only dared to keep their eyes on her. It
is the kind of pain that allows you to smile genuinely despite the tears; like
mothers smiling upon their newly born babies even though they have been
literally torn up. In the process of labor, they might scream and shout in
pain that they hate their husbands and that they don't want this to happen
but deep inside lies that love for their child that enables them to carry on.
Such pure and uncompromising love allows them to be an inch within death
and still smile and laugh and remain in love. How I wish I am also capable of
such love. To love and not seek mastery over it but rather to embrace it
despite its thorns and be able to smile. For there is no love without pain.
There has always been pain when love is involved because it is the greatest
paradox of life. It is the finding of one's self in another and in time they will
come to odds with each other and thus sundering souls that are in love.
My soul has been sundered but then I'd have it no other way and this is
despite the fact that I know that time will eventually get the best of me and
I will grow weary but how I desire to never be weary. Such is life's greatest
crime: to put immortal love into the hearts of fragile creatures such as us.We may never be able to do justice to it but then there is no shame in
trying. The world will remind us that we must keep order and that we must
love another in order to maintain that order. Yet, it is in the chaos of my
heart where I am closest to understanding love and it is in the chaos where I
find her for the world has no hold where there are no rules and time has no
hold over the eternal. I hear it whisper when there is dead silence and it
bids me to tell you
When it comes, grab it with both hands and never let go.

I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reasonBringing something we must learnAnd we are led
To those who help us most to growIf we let them
And we help them in returnWell, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know Im who I am todayBecause I knew you..
Like a comet pulled from orbitAs it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulderHalfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better? But because I knew you
I have been changed for good.
For Good, Wicked.
