Ryo TakagiRyo began working with Kirie (hand-cut silhouettes) while in uni-versity, and the style, which gives a lot of depth to each of his images, spilled over into every aspect of his illustrating career. As a burgeon-ing young artist he drew inspira-tion from many sources including Higashi-Kunpei, a poet and creator of children’s books as well as the most famous Kirie artist in Japan.

MinojiMinoji is the brainchild of Miwako Koieyama, a

young Tokyo designer. Minoji is a childhood nick-name, with the Mi- taken from her first name, and

the -noji derived from an Edo-period manner of ad-dressing one’s friends. The characters that dominate

her illustrations reflect her lifelong interest in the di-chotomy between Kawaii (cute) and Okashii (strange).

The images she has created, therefore, appeal to a wide audience ranging from children to adults.
