The Food on Film series, sponsored by the Food Studies Theme, serves up films that highlight not only the cuisines of different countries but also the ways through which food helps to tell a story. The Fall series features two Japanese films and the Spring series will focus on the Indian subcontinent. Panel discussions will follow the films. JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI SEPT. 30, 7:00 Renowned sushi chef Jiro Ono is a perfectionist. The 85-year old owner of Tokyo-based restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro has been titled “the world’s greatest sushi chef.” Still, he works tirelessly toward refining the taste and presentation of his sushi masterpieces. Named a national treasure by Japan, Jiro is the first sushi chef to receive three Michelin stars. This documentary follows Jiro as he strives for improvement while preparing his eldest son Yoshikazu to become the heir of his legacy. SPIRITED AWAY OCT. 1, 7:00 While relocating to a small Japanese town with her family, 10-year old Chihiro encounters the unexpected when she ventures into a realm controlled by spirits, gods, creatures and sorcerers. When she discovers that her parents have mysteriously been turned into animals, she must figure out how to save her parents before returning to the world from which she came. In 2001, this animated film became the first anime to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Picture. U Food on Film: Focus on Japan
