Why RCS ILPs ?• As a RSC ILP student you could be:
– Interacting with clinical staff members and learning new clinical skills
– Being mentored in understanding a sub-specialist area of medicine or surgery
– Gain increased levels of clinical or translational research experience
– Supervised by RCS PhD scientists and rural clinicians– Supported by dedicated RSC research officers – Access to research academics A/Prof Craig McLachlan; Dr
Martin Rees; PhD students with diverse expertise • e.g. Experimental design, Ethics submissions, Statistical
modelling, biomarker studies, genetics, publication writing assistance; survey design, data collection, data analysis.
Sydney Campus
• Academic support to the ILP program
• Work as collaborative research group
• Open door policy• Academic virtual
support for data analysis
• Experimental design and review of ethics submissions
• Manuscript assistance

Sydney Campus
Albury / Wodonga
• Excellent clinical mentors • Lifestyle — Murray to the
Mountains, Skiing, Water Sports, Wineries, Historic Towns
• Regular flights to Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra – Virgin flights
• Modern campus
Albury / Wodonga
Albury / Wodonga
• ILP research opportunities and experience– Many Visiting Medical Officers interested in Clinical Research
Projects• Urology – Bladder cancer • Orthopaedics - Telemedicine; Metal ions in plasma from
joint repair • Maternal health – High BMI mothers; Dietary interventions;
Nausea in pregnancy and biomarkers • Rehabilitation medicine – Multiple sclerosis and novel
therapeutic interventions
– Current ILP project: • ‘Management of Anaphylaxis’
Albury / Wodonga
Coffs Harbour• Excellent clinical mentors • Refurbished / enlarged
campus building; dedicated room for ILP Students
• Coastal lifestyle• Mid North Coast Cancer
Institute• Collaborative links with
Southern cross University
Coffs Harbour
Coffs Harbour• ILP research opportunities and experience
– Previous ILP students have been successful in having papers accepted for presentation at Australasia-wide meetings, and publication in peer-reviewed medical journals. 4 submitted and under review.
– Coffs Harbour Health Campus has recently received a $1.5M grant from Health Workforce Australia to promote intra-professional learning.
– 2014 projects are again expected to yield peer-reviewed publications;
– Professional research culture within the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute: clinicians and academics have extensive publications records and a history of significant grant support.
– Highest number of PhD trained clinicans across rural campuses
Coffs Harbour• Examples of ILP Projects for 2014: - Mid North Coast cancer Institute more than 7 projects on offer
focusing on radiation oncology outcomes across breast, brain, prostate, lung. – Simulated learning environment and skills training- effectiveness
of Intraprofessional training. Research questions on ‘Simulated Learning environments’ – a state of the art centre with high fidelity simulators and mannequins.
– Patient education: mobile Health technology for rural patients. Addresses the adoption of handheld devices for patient education in the rural setting. Project involves the development and validation of an appropriate tool to assess patients’ health education needs
Port Macquarie
• Research Officer Kris Vine with a masters in Public Health on site to provide ILP support
• A school with advanced ultrasound and teaching simulation capabilities
• Dedicated ILP room • Coastal lifestyle
Port Macquarie
Port Macquarie• ILP research opportunities and experience
– Current project: ‘Relationships between effective pharmacological intervention and 24 heart rate variance in idopathic Parkinson's disease’
– 2014 projects are• Type 2 Diabetes and genetic biomarkers in general practice • Renal dialysis and interactions between vitamin D and aortic
stiffness • Student examination stress correlations with heart rate
variability• Assessment of Student led ultrasound training to other students • Maternal satisfaction based on a shared obstetric tertiary care
model• Levels of patient satisfaction following breast cancer surgery
(comparing partial mastectomy to mastectomy) and QOL • Prospective study of very low calorie diet on liver dimensions
and systemic biomarkers in high BMI surgical patients
Wagga Wagga• Research officer support for
ethics application• Fully equipped office space• Vibrant and cosmopolitan
regional city with thriving sports and arts communities
• Large regional interventional cardiology unit
• Academic appointment in Paediatrics
• Emphasis on clinical experience
Wagga Wagga
Wagga Wagga• Research opportunities and experience
– Focus on clinical research, large range of specialists in Wagga who are interested in supervising research projects
– Previous projects:• treatment of morbidly obese by GPs in rural setting (General Practice)• stroke thrombolysis (Neurology unit)• impact of bariatritic surgery on diet and exercise programs (Bariatric Surgery)
– Two students last year selected projects in the field of bariatric surgery for their ILP projects. Within a week of starting their projects, they were observing bariatric procedures being performed.
– Current RSC student is creating a significant cardiology database of the last 1000 patients presented to the cath lab. Multiple research papers anticipated. Data will create opportunities for future ILP projects (data mining)
Wagga Wagga• ILP Projects for 2014, proposed by specialists:
– PIC line insertion and complications: an audit (Anaesthetics / ICU)– Assessment of the impact of tele-linkage on trauma outcomes – Wagga Wagga Base Hospital (Emergency medicine)– Assessment of the state-wide early cardiac reperfusion strategy
in the Riverina (Emergency medicine; Cardiology)– Equestrian related injuries in the Riverina (Emergency medicine)
– famous for the developing the Wagga horse fall risk assessment – Study of patients with neck of femur fractures in the Riverina
(Emergency medicine)– Outcomes of Actifuse a tissue engineering scaffold for bone
growth in orthopaedic surgery (Orthopaedic surgery)
