Should we see federal funds
•
Idahoans believe their state is more self-sufficient than it actually is• Many believe (incorrectly) that less than 30% of the state’s budget
comes from DC.• Over 80% believe Idaho should keep an inventory of federal funds
going into the state.• Registered voters in Idaho are nearly unequivocal in their beliefs th
state legislative priorities should include a plan for fiscal readinessand annual inventory/recordkeeping
Idahoans don’t know about federal funds, but want to

Should we know the risks
•
Over two-thirds want to see the influence of the federal governmentreduced in Idaho’s state government.• Overwhelmingly, voters agree that if it sounds too good to be true, i
is: nothing “free” from Washington comes without a true cost andstrings attached.
Idahoans don’t buy the “free stuff” argument

Federal government funds to stategovernment are never “free,” and usually
come with strings attached.

Should we plan for future cuts
•
Over 80% of Idahoans believe the state should have a contingencyplan for financial readiness in case federal funding is reduced.• Although nearly all surveyed say that financial preparedness is
important, not many believe that Idaho has reached this goal.
Idahoans want to plan responsibly, and know that we haven’t

Some states are making
preparations in case federal funding for that state is
reduced due to budgetarychanges in Washington, D.C. Inyour opinion, how important is
it for Idaho to be financially prepared for this possibility?

State versus federal solutions
•
80% majority agree that state-run programs allocate funds betterthan fed programs.• They consistently and strongly prefer state government prominence
not autonomy and correspondingly, a distaste for the federalgovernment and its long reach across the country.
•
A solid majority would be more likely to support a candidate for offthat campaigned on reducing federal funds to Idaho in order to limitthe federal government‘s influence.
Idahoans overwhelmingly trust government that’s closer to home
