The = la – goes before feminine nouns

A/an = une – goes before feminine nouns

The = le – goes before masculine nouns

A/an = un – goes before masculine nouns

BUT: l’ (‘the’ before a vowel or h) &

les (‘the’ before plurals)

go with either gender!
