June 2016 Flag Day
An Invitation to Vacation
It’s June, school is out, the days are warm and our minds, hearts and desire turn to
the thoughts of vacation. Many of you are already planning your vacation plans.
Vacation: a desire, an expectation, a repeated statement in our vocabulary, “I need
a vacation!”
The dictionary defines a vacation as “A period of time devoted to pleasure, rest, or
relaxation.” A time of rest, pleasure and relaxation – from this definition, a vacation
is a spiritual moment; it is a moment of Grace. I would like to offer to you a vacation
this summer that is more than running as fast as you can, with the hope of returning
to work on Monday so you can finally rest.
This summer consider a spiritual vacation, it is simple and it is free. (REST) Start
each day with 5 minutes of prayer; you can do this from your bed, your car, even the
sitting in your favorite chair. Spend 5 minutes reading your Bible; if you do not know
where to start practice the John Wesley method, just open the Bible and start read-
ing at the beginning of the first chapter you find. (RELAXATION) Plan at least 30
minutes to be together as a family (without the TV, computer, or phones), share your
stories and your lives. (PLEASURE) Attend church; you know this statement had to
be included: but church is about worship, it’s not a task, it’s not a job, it’s not about
you, it is about God, the author of vacations. So practice a spiritual vacation this
summer, wherever you go, and around the middle of August you will reflect on the
many blessings God has given you and just maybe you will not be as happy to send
you kid’s back to school.
*And for those of you who say, “Vacation, what Vacation?” Remember our church will always be here to offer you activities, fellowship and a place of sanctuary *
They probably won’t have a Kitchen or Fellowship Hall named after them. They
serve our LORD with humility in silence, often for many years. Many have come
and gone: we honor them. Below is a partial list of ushers and the approximate
years they have served:
Bill Drake 60 years Tony Fulkerson 62 years
Henry Van Geem 53 years Euel Whitaker 50 years
Warren Ayres 40 years Gary Southard 40 years
Carl Nichols 25 years Andy Kocher 10 years
Charles Gibson 10 years
There are many who have served ten years or less, including Janis Adams, Jean Perkins, Margarette Walker, Pete
Minnix, John Wiseman, Byrle Graham, and Jerry & Sandi Bettenhausen.
Ralph Fulkerson is the man who helped a number of us begin this incredible journey of serving. He began his
ushering in 1941, continuing until 1996.
Thus, with sincere gratitude, we offer our thanks
*Usher Captain Tony Fulkerson
Hymn notes from Josh White
Last Sunday we sang one of the greatest hymns or our faith, How Firm a Foundation. We do not sing it often
enough- and while singing it Sunday morning, I realized it needs to be a hymn we keep near to our
hearts. The hymn was written in 1787 and we know very little about the author. It appeared first in Rippon's
A Selection of Hymns and the author was simply published as "K". In all fairness, simply by reading the words
of this great hymn, we can learn a lot about "K". We can surmise that "K" was grounded in solid theology,
and was a faithful follower of Christ. Much of the text comes straight from the Bible, such as Isaiah 41:10,
43:2, Corinthians 12:9, and Hebrews 13:5.
This hymn was sung during the funerals of U.S. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. It
was sung by American troops engaged in the Spanish-American war on Christmas morning in 1898. It was a
favorite of General Robert E. Lee and was sung at his funeral as well. In 2016, the hymn continues to be
sung in churches around the world, with many arrangements and adaptations used. The words of "How Firm
a Foundation" are every bit as relevant today as they were hundreds of years ago (as is true for any great
hymn).
Sunday morning, if you have a moment before the service, turn to page 529 in the hymnal and read the words
again. I hope this hymn provides comfort in a world where there seems to be none.

PRAYER
I prayed for strength, and then I lost awhile All sense of nearness, human and divine; The love I leaned on failed and pierced my heart, The hands I clung to loosed themselves from mine;
But while I swayed, weak, trembling, and alone, The everlasting arms upheld my own.
I prayed for light; the sun went down in clouds, The moon was darkened by a misty doubt, The stars of heaven were dimmed by earthly fears,
And all my little candle flames burned out;
But while I sat in shadow, wrapped in night,
The face of Christ made all the darkness bright.
I prayed for peace, and dreamed of restful ease, A slumber drugged from pain, a hushed repose; Above my head the skies were black with storm, And fiercer grew the onslaught of my foes;
But while the battle raged, and wild winds blew, I heard His voice and Perfect peace I knew.
I thank Thee, Lord, Thou wert too wise to heed My feeble prayers, and answer as I sought, Since these rich gifts Thy bounty has bestowed Have brought me more than all I asked or thought;
Giver of good, so answer each request With Thine own giving, better than my best. --Annie Johnson Flint
UUMC congregation:
What a honor for us to be selected
to receive the "Partner of the Year"
recognition at the annual PIE
banquet last month. This recognition
was because of our support for
Southern Hills Elementary School
during the past year as well as the
long history we have as a PIE
sponsor with them. We had just
enough money left over from our year
long efforts so that on the last day
of this school year - May 27 - we
were able to take donuts and a fruit
tray to the staff and teachers. Of
course, they were so appreciative
and looking forward to the break
over the summer months. Thanks to
everyone for being a part of this
vital outreach in our community.
