UPTV Database - Overview• Purpose

– Reduce amount of time it takes to create PowerPoint slides for UPTV

– Serve as a functioning alternative to using paper forms

• Objective– Create a database which contains all data seen on UPTV– Function as an online service in which residents can check events

whenever they want

• Specifications– Run database from a web server on the current UPTV computer

which will be accessed via the network at UPRC.– Once implemented, staff can interact with the database through web

forms remotely from any computer on the network and there should be little to no interaction needed with the actual UPTV computer.

ILE Problem Identification

• Completed last semester

• 2 focuses:– Dining Room– Education Room/Great Room

Page 42: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Team Roles

• Eric Buysse-rewiring sound system in Great room/Education room

• Melissa Dunn-rewiring sound system in Great room/Education room; advertising ReACT on UPTV

• Rachael Fischer-creating and implementing plan for collection of noise measurements in dining room; give recommendations based on results

• Kendall McEwan-room arrangement in Great room; researching ALDs to be used at University Place

Page 43: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Problem Identification: Dining Room

• Survey was taken, which indicated that residents were having difficulties conversing during mealtimes due to high level of noise

• Past team took measurements of the sound levels in different areas in dining room– These measurements did not prove to be useful

• Past team members also suggested trying to implement sound absorbing material

Page 44: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Problem Identification: The Great Room

• Residents have trouble hearing during

lectures, and have been known to walk out because it was too difficult to hear

• Past team suggested:– Connecting the two sound systems in the

rooms and incorporating unused speakers– Make recommendations for an assistive listening

device (such as an FM system)

Page 45: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress – Dining Room

• The new team decided to locate the problem areas in the dining room and put “Sit Hear” signs on tables where listening conditions are better– Further recommendations will also be given

• Located and reviewed noise measurement data collected last semester

• Brainstormed ideas for the new noise data collection test plan

• In the process of creating new test plan for noise data collection

Page 46: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress – Dining Room

• Results of previous noise measurement data– Dosimeter was used to measure noise levels,

however a sound level meter would have been more appropriate

– Noise measurements collected were not very beneficial in terms of providing useful information

• Descriptions of where measurements taken were unclear• Average noise levels in both Main dining room and Four

Seasons dining room were 70dBSPL

Page 47: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress – Dining Room

• Brainstorming for new noise data collection test plan for noise– Draw up detailed map of dining room

• Aid in setting up appropriate locations for measurements• Resource for future team members

– Use of sound level meter rather than dosimeter– Measurements taken throughout different

locations over a series of days• During both lunch and dinner hours to compare

differences between two time periods

Page 48: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress – Dining Room

• Currently in the process of creating new test plan for noise data collection– Visited University Place on several occasions to look at

dining room– Measurements of room dimensions for both Main

dining room and Four Seasons dining room were taken– Created map for both dining rooms– Decided on locations in which noise measurements will

be taken– Looked into possible sound level meters for

measurements

The Dining Room: Finishing the Semester

• Finish creating new noise data collection test plan

• Get input from professionals regarding test plan

• Actual implementation of test plan will begin next semester

Page 52: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress – Dining Room

Page 53: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress – The Great Room• Design Specification phase:

– Assistive Listening Devices were researched– ILE thought they could address some problems with

re-arrangement of seating– After observing a lecture at UPRC, ILE decided to

develop a document to orient speakers and staff before lectures

– The connection of the sound system is being pursued

Page 54: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress -The Great Room: ALDs

• Specifications for the Assistive Listening Devices to be incorporated:– simple installation and setup for lectures. – affordable: defined as a less than $800 cost to UPRC, and $100

– 150 per person for a receiver. – sufficient frequency range to support the speech range without

distortion. – at least a 100 foot range for accurate transmission. – a receiver that is easy to handle. – supportive to a majority of residents. That is, 90% of residents

should be able to physically benefit (this gives allowances for severe hearing impairment).

– able to interface with the current system (the speaker should be needed to use a single wireless mic).

Page 55: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress – The Great Room: ALDs

• Assistive Listening Devices: Specification Development Phase– Last semester three options were suggested for the future team to look

into– The Personal FM system was quickly dismissed – The infrared system was thrown out due to cost and needs of the

residents confirmed by a survey• Of 26 residents surveyed, 18 think it is difficult to hear in the Education room• Only one resident had a hearing aid with a telecoil• Additional notes from the survey: (1) the mic feeds back a lot, and has a very

tinny sound; (2) residents did not indicate trouble hearing during musical presentations; (3) staggering of chairs would be beneficial, as many residents were leaning out of their chairs to see (more later re: this)

Useful for majority of residents Easily coordinated by staff

Current Progress – The Great Room: ALDs

• Assistive Listening Devices: Specification Development Phase– Systems were narrowed down to three within specifications:

the Listen Performance package, the Personal PA value pack, and the Pro Wide Band FM system

– The Listen Performance Package was used and recommended by Elliot Hall and Central Fellowship Church and Marilyn Electronics

– Originally had trouble getting in touch with the distributor, but Elliot Hall used a different distributor, Harris Communications, which was much more helpful

Page 58: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress – The Great Room: Room Arrangement

– Rearranging the seating was just brought up this semester as a possibility

– The team ran into a problem with accessibility issues and fire codes, so not very much rearrangement of seating is possible

– About 20 minutes of a lecture was observed when the survey was given out; including the points mentioned earlier:

• Residents were leaning out of chairs trying to see• The speaker did not really know how to use the equipment

Page 59: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress – The Great Room: Lecture Orientation

• Document would include:– optimal positioning for seats (a slight staggering so that

residents do not block each other from seeing) – where to stand to avoid feedback from the mic– how to trouble-shoot feedback– a reminder that residents may have a hard time hearing– a reminder to speak clearly into the mic and face

forward– a request to repeat questions that are asked before

answering them– a request to close the doors at the back of the room

before a presentation is started to block out the noisy lobby area, and leave side doors open so that residents may come or leave through those doors if necessary

Page 60: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress – The Great Room: Lecture Orientation

• Presentation– The orientation would be on a half-sheet of cardstock– Possible integrate something like… “It can be very hard

for residents to hear during lectures. Do you want to help? All you have to do is LISTEN”

• L ook at the audience speaking to them.• I f there is a question posed, repeat it before answering• S tand behind the speakers to avoid feedback• T• E ncourage exits through the side doors• N oise is the enemy – keep the doors to the noisy lobby closed!

Current Progress - Sound System Connection

• 2. Began to experiment– Turned on the PA system at the nursing station.– Undid some wires connected to the VC in the

Education Room to see what would happen– Removed the faceplate of the volume control in the

Great Room. • Similar set-up but one extra wire

– Tried feeding the Education Room speakers from another sound source.

– Finally, fiddled with the current system in the Education Room to see if the connection would accomplish our goal.

Page 71: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.
Page 72: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.

Current Progress - Sound System Connection

• 3. Came to conclusions– It is feasible to connect the white speakers to

the current sound system in the Education Room.

– If we want to use all 8 white speakers (Education Room & Great Room) we would need a separate wire going between the two rooms. Might need to involve extra people.

Page 73: University Place Retirement Community University Place TV Ilhwang Chung Brian Lee Eric Buysse Vince Ruppert.
