SMU GUIDE SMU GUIDE

Dear Parents,

We are delighted that your student has joined our community during a special time in SMU’s history. The University is observing the second year of its Second Century Celebration, commemorating SMU’s founding in 1911 and opening in 1915. As we honor our heritage, we are building for our future and another century of progress.

The incoming Class of 2016 and all students will benefit from many exciting changes on campus. The new Engaged Learning initiative complements the curriculum, providing support for students to engage in extensive learning activities beyond the classroom, such as research and service projects. We’re also proud that our student-athletes are gearing up to compete in the BIG EAST Conference beginning next summer.

Students can find one-on-one support to meet their academic goals at the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center, which offers tutoring, study skills training and writing assistance. I encourage first-year students to visit the Hegi Family Career Development Center and begin planning for internships and professional success. Students can develop leadership skills

by being involved in campus life. SMU has hundreds of opportunities from which to choose, including student government, intramurals, community service and religious activities.

SMU’s centennial coincides with The Second Century Campaign, which is providing even more opportunities for students and is raising the academic profile of the university. With the support of families, alumni, friends and the campus community, SMU is raising resources for scholarships, faculty and academic programs, and transforming the campus experience.

This guide includes a snapshot of campus events and resources that will provide your student with a fulfilling university experience, and information helping parents to stay connected with campus news and academic schedules.

Congratulations on your choice of SMU, and welcome to the Hilltop.

Sincerely,

R. Gerald TurnerPresident

SMU GUIDE

Dear Mustang Parents,

Welcome to the SMU family! A new academic year presents a great new beginning for you and your student. It is my hope that your student will fully experience this time — with all of its possibilities — and treasure it for a lifetime.

Smart, talented, scholarly, enthusiastic and dedicated are just a few of the adjectives that describe the SMU student body. The diversity of ideas, experiences and perspectives that each student brings contributes something special to this great university.

College is about discovering new things and exploring new paths, and your student will quickly find his or her place and feel at home here. Higher education research shows that students who get involved in the campus community are the most successful. Encourage

your student to take advantage of all SMU has to offer, including:

• Getting to know faculty, classmates and staff across campus

• Participating in SMU’s myriad student organizations, programs and activities

• Exploring learning opportunities inside and outside the classroom

• Finding their passion

Academic advisers, orientation leaders, Student Affairs staff members and faculty are here to help students begin charting a successful course. Have a great year!

Sincerely,

Lori S. White, Ph.D.Vice President for Student Affairs

SMU GUIDESMU GUIDE

Founded in 1911 by what is now The United Methodist Church, SMU opened in 1915 with support from Dallas leaders. The University is nonsectarian in its teaching, committed to freedom

of inquiry and seeks to enhance the intellectual, cultural, technical, ethical and social development of a diverse student body.

• Undergraduate research opportunities for students are available through programs such as Big iDeas, Undergraduate Research Assistantship program, Richter Research Fellowships, Engaged Learning, Hamilton Undergraduate Research Scholars and the Meadows Exploration Awards.

• Several students recently won prestigious, nationally competitive national honors for 2012-13: Graduate student Megan Bond Hinrichsen received a Fulbright fellowship to study how microfinance affects health in Ecuador; sophomore Lade Obamehinti received a Boren Scholarship, which provides U.S. undergraduate and graduate students with resources to acquire language skills and experience in countries critical to

the nation’s security and stability; and juniors Marcial Sanchez and Mayra Pratz each received Gilman Scholarships, which are awarded to Pell Grant recipients who wish to study overseas.

Academic Offerings

SMU offers 103 undergraduate degrees in 91 fields. At the graduate level, there are 104 Master’s degrees in 101 fields, two graduate professional degrees (law and theology) and 27 doctoral programs. The University has seven degree-granting schools:

• Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences

• Meadows School of the Arts

• Cox School of Business

• Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering

Academics, Research and Faculty Excellence

SMU offers students abundant opportunities for access to faculty in small classes, research experience, international study, leadership development and off-campus service and internships, with the goal of preparing students to be contributing citizens and leaders for our state, the nation and the world.

Internships and study abroad

Wesleigh Ogle had a taste of “real life” in London during an internship with an online arts magazine. She commuted four days a week on the London Underground to her office in an art gallery, where she wrote news stories and created videos about artists, exhibits and cultural events.

“I felt like a real worker,” says Ogle, an Irvine, California, native who recently graduated with degrees in journalism and religious studies. “I learned to report stories that I thought people would find interesting. I gained confidence to travel around London on my own and interview people I didn’t know. I’m still in touch with some of the contacts I made.”

A grant from The Roger and Marion Palley Family Internship Endowment

Fund helped make possible Ogle’s internship through the SMU-in-London program. The Fund provides grants to SMU students for domestic or international internships through SMU’s Hegi Family Career Development Center.

The Hegi Center offers students resources to research international opportunities, including an annual “Work Abroad” panel discussion featuring multiple employers. “With so many companies today going global, job applicants with international experience really stand out,” says Marva McGrew, associate director of employer relations at the Hegi center.

McGrew adds that all internships – domestic and international – allow students to explore their fields of interest and make important connections.

The Hegi Center encourages students to make use of the career center throughout their time at SMU. It’s never too early to take advantage of its resources, which include:

• Counselors, who work one-on-one with students to develop a four-year plan;

• Career and internship fairs during the fall and spring, as well as industry panels composed of employers;

• Workshops on interviewing, resumes and other career skills;

• MustangTRAK, an online database featuring hundreds of jobs and internships, and UCAN, a shared internship database among 21 universities across the country.

SMU Abroad

During her year abroad with SMU-in-Spain, senior Ashley Duncan toured the ancient city of Toledo, the Alhambra palace of Granada and the Roman aqueducts of Segovia. In her home base of Madrid, she took courses at the highly regarded Spanish institution La Fundación Ortega-Marañón and met weekly at the Prado Museum for art history class.

“It was so cool to see paintings that I’ve studied in school,” says Duncan, a Spanish and psychology major. “And it was such an awesome feeling to have a painting explained to me in Spanish and be able to understand what was going on. I felt so accomplished.”

SMU has a long tradition of providing diverse and widespread education abroad programs for undergraduate students, with more than 600 SMU students studying abroad each year. SMU Abroad offers

more than 148 programs in 50 countries, with opportunities for study, internships and service in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Oceania.

“Students, parents, business leaders and government officials increasingly recognize the value of developing international perspectives and skills,” says Michael Clarke, executive director of the International Center, which oversees education abroad and provides other services.

For most programs, the cost of spending an academic year or semester abroad is similar to tuition, room and board on the Dallas campus. Students receive academic credit for their courses abroad if they participate in SMU-approved programs and have applied through SMU Abroad.

During SMU’s “J Term,” or January Term, students complete one three-credit-hour course in just eight concentrated days. Set for January 7-16, 2013, at the SMU-in-Plano campus, J Term offers about 20 courses, many of which change each term, taught by faculty members and adjunct professors from Cox School of Business, Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, Lyle School of engineering and Meadows School of the Arts. “About 200 undergraduates participate in J Term each year,” says Kate Livingston, SMU-in-Plano campus director and director of the J Term program. “They do it to stay on track with their degree completion plan so they can graduate on time with their classmates.” Learn more at smu.edu/JTerm.

J Term

For more than a year Michael McCarthy conducted a database analysis for Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center, focusing on the effectiveness of the VA’s home care services for veterans with spinal cord injuries.

“This project covered a lot of new territory for me,” says McCarthy, a Dallas native who recently graduated with degrees in statistical science and mathematics. “Learning to work within a context that involved messy, real-world data was a very valuable experience.”

His work was one of the first student projects to be completed as part of SMU’s new Engaged Learning initiative, which provides services and support for students to engage in extensive research, service, internships and other creative learning activities in North Texas and beyond.

“Engaged Learning emphasizes the integration of theory in the classroom and direct experience beyond the classroom,” says Susan Kress, director of the Office of Engaged Learning. “Students who participate acquire knowledge and skills that give them a competitive edge in the next step of their adult lives.”

Engaged Learning

As part of Engaged Learning, all students have the opportunity to design their own in-depth project, called an Unbridled Project, and to apply for grants up to $2,000. Students who complete their projects receive recognition on their transcripts.

Other new projects include:

• Interviewing Mayan women in Guatemala about health care.

• Studying Asian carp in the Mississippi Delta.

• Developing a “Spanish for business” language certification program in Dallas.

Dedman Center

SMU’s Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports hops from its 6 a.m. opening time until it closes at midnight. The facility, with its 170,000 square feet of indoor recreational space, hums all day with students, faculty and staff running, swimming, weightlifting, spinning, playing basketball and racquetball, rock climbing, using treadmills and participating in aerobics and yoga. An outdoor area includes The Falls (zero-entry pool with 7-foot waterfalls), two sand volleyball courts and leisure spaces. SMU alumni also can use the facilities at Dedman Center for an annual membership fee.

Intramural Sports

Some 3,000 SMU students participate in 30 team and individual intramural sports each year. Residence halls, Greek groups, graduate students and groups of friends form teams with names like Peruna Posse, First Floor Mac Attack and Dunkin Donuts.

Outdoor Adventures

From canoeing the Rio Grande to snorkeling in Fiji to hiking in Arkansas, Outdoor Adventures, a division of the Recreational Sports department, encourages recreation and leadership through outdoor pursuits. Most trips cost less than $200 and are ranked according to level of experience and physical activity. Outdoor Adventures also hosts low-cost outdoor skills workshops at the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports. For students

planning their own outdoor activities, Outdoor Adventures rents a variety of appropriate gear at reasonable rates.

Sport Clubs

Sport Clubs include cricket, badminton, baseball, ice hockey, judo, lacrosse (men’s and women’s), triathlon, table

tennis, men’s rowing, rugby, sailing, men’s soccer, wakeboarding and volleyball. Each club is developed and governed by the club’s student members working in conjunction with student government, with guidance from the Department of Recreational Sports.

Alternative Breaks offers 14 trips during fall, winter, spring and summer breaks, and has more than 150 student, faculty and staff participants. Service helps students connect what they learn in the classroom to community issues, which adds richness and depth to coursework.

“Every trip makes a difference in the communities we visit and in the lives of the people who take part,” says Matthew Gayer, a St. Louis native who served as the director of the organization before his 2012 graduation with degrees in public policy and political science.

The director of SMU’s Community Engagement & Leadership Center, where Alternative Breaks is housed, says students increasingly are demonstrating an interest in service. “When students realize the positive impact they can make in a community, they realize their responsibilities as global citizens,” she says.

Other student service opportunities include:

• Service-learning courses where faculty connect coursework with community service.

• Academic-Community Engagement (ACE) House, a home in East Dallas where student residents

and other SMU students tutor neighborhood children.

• Embrey Human Rights Program in which students participate in tours to Poland, Rwanda and other sites of human rights violations.

• Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility, which awards internship stipends to students exploring service and ethics around the world.

• Outstanding Senior Woman and Man awards, which honor 16 students for their high academic achievement, leadership and service.

Achievements of The Second Century Campaign to date include increased scholarship funding, which has helped attract talented students sought by other universities nationwide. Funding for academic programs and faculty appointments has enabled SMU to recruit and retain distinguished professors.

In fall 2011 the Cox School of Business dedicated the new Kitt Investing and Trading Center, where business students can learn hands-on about finance and investment. During November 2011, SMU held its first centennial academic symposium, “The University and the City: Higher Education and the Common Good.” The event brought local and national experts to campus for panel discussions with SMU students and faculty members. In April, SMU released an impact report that describes the many bonds connecting the University and the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Also in April,

SMU celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Residential Commons Complex during Founders’ Day Weekend.

SMU GUIDESMU GUIDE

Preventing Substance Abuse

SMU is committed to helping its students pursue their education with good health and lifestyle habits.

The University offers students extensive programs and resources aimed at substance abuse prevention and education, including required wellness courses, counseling, assessments, peer intervention, online resources and special

training for leaders in residence halls and Greek houses, as well as faculty and staff. In addition, a medical amnesty program encourages students to call for emergency help for themselves or friends due to substance abuse, without normally being subject to the SMU disciplinary process.

SMU’s programs are monitored by the University Commission on Substance Abuse Prevention and Education, which reports to the president and identifies new or emerging areas of concern.

Learn more at smu.edu/liveresponsibly.

Mandatory Health Insurance

In its commitment to students’ health and well being, the University requires all domestic students taking nine credit hours or more and all international students taking one credit hour or more to maintain health insurance as a condition of enrollment.

SMU’s mandatory health insurance policy requires undergraduate and graduate students to either provide documentation of private insurance coverage or to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) each term.

After students enroll for courses, a “Health Insurance” button will appear in their Student Center in Access.SMU. Clicking on this button will start the process by which students will be able to either elect or waive SHIP.

If students do not elect or waive SHIP by August 24, 2012, for the fall term, and by January 25, 2013, for the spring term, they will be enrolled automatically in the plan and their student account will be billed the semiannual premium for the academic term.
