2 UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO BRANDING GUIDELINES JUNE 2010
MASTER LOGO – HORIZONTAL
Preferred formats
There are horizontal and vertical versions of the logo (the combination of text and coat of
arms that make up the university logo). The preferred logo format is the colour, horizontal
version illustrated here.
Preferred colour and backgrounds
This is the colour version of the logo. The preferred use is; colour logo floating on a white
background as illustrated opposite. The next preferred use is white text on a red background
(advertising, promotional applications and merchandise). The logo should always appear on a
solid coloured background, never a pattern, texture or photo.
Minimum size
The logo must be used at no less than 40mm wide for crest and text legibility. In some
special circumstances, the Communications Office may give permission for the logo to be
used at a minimum of 22mm wide. At this size the title only is readable.
Clear space
The logo must always feature a minimum amount of clear space as indicated by the
positional blue ‘W’ illustrated on the page opposite, which is taken from the ‘W’ in the word
’WAIKATO’ on the logo. The logo can sit next to partner organisation logos.
It should not be combined with them in any way and the minimum amount of clear space
should always be adhered to.
Electronic file names
These logo versions are named as below for print (also available in other formats):
Waik_Print_CMYK_H.eps
Waik_Print_CMYK_H_Red.eps
Our coat of arms has two key elements: the shield and the name of the institution
The University of Waikato Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato.
The motto, Ko Te Tangata, means “The People” and reflects the university’s philosophy that
people are central to the institution and are our most valued resource. The outside red border
is a stylised fern frond or pitau that symbolises new birth, growth, vitality strength and
achievement. The open book surrounded by the four stars of the Southern Cross is a symbol
of learning. The crest design is in the university’s colours of black, red and gold.
The coat of arms must not appear without the words The University of Waikato Te Whare
Wānanga o Waikato. There may be some exceptional circumstances where the use of the
shield only, may be necessary, eg on memorabilia or clothing. For items of merchandise,
special approval should be obtained from the Communications Office for the use of the
shield without the words The University of Waikato Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato. For
uses other than merchandise, approval must be sought from the Communications Office.
The coat of arms colours, typefaces and proportions cannot be changed or modified.
Previous versions of the coat of arms are now redundant and cannot be used. Please see
this style guideline for all applications including black and white and reversal options.
It is inappropriate to combine separate elements of artwork to make up a logo. You must
always seek to download a legitimate approved logo from the brand style-guidelines.
These are available for downloading from http://unipr.waikato.ac.nz/resources/
When downloading the logo, it is important to select the appropriate version for each specific
use, to ensure a consistency over all applications. You will see a sample of the available logos
on the upcoming pages. For example, when creating a PowerPoint presentation, use the
‘RGB_On_screen’ logos. For web applications use the ‘Web_Colour’ logos. A set of logos for
inserting into word documents is included, named ‘For_Word’.
When producing printed material, use the ‘For_Print’ versions. Included in this set are
two types of files, ‘CMYK’ and ‘PMS_Spot’. As a general rule, use the ‘CMYK’ versions for
magazine or newspaper requirements. The ‘PMS_Spot’ logos are for special runs, such as
stationery or signage. Please consult with your web or graphic designer, printer, advertising
contact or other supplier for specific requirements.

Minimum size
The vertical logo must be used at no less than 15mm wide for crest and text legibility.
There are no exceptions.
Clear space
The logo must always feature a minimum amount of clear space as indicated by the
positional blue ‘W’ illustrated on the page opposite, which is taken from the ‘W’ in the word

Minimum size and clear space rules
The same minimum space and clear space rules apply as with the colour logos
(see previous pages).
MASTER LOGO – ONE COLOUR OPTIONS
One colour versions of the logo are available as illustrated.
When to use one colour logos
In situations where four colour printing is not necessary then a one colour logo must be used.
If the one colour being printed is red, then use the red logo. In all other cases the black logo
must be used.

6 UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO BRANDING GUIDELINES JUNE 2010
University colours
Colours vary on different devices and screens. For instance, the
red on your computer screen will vary from that on a colour inkjet
printer, which will vary from a professionally printed red document.
As described earlier (see Logo and coat of arms), it is important to
use the correct colour version according to what it will be used for.
When the logo is used at small sizes in web and on-screen (RGB)
presentations, the detail in the crest begins to blur. For this reason
an alternative, darker red has been used on the Kowhaiwhai pattern
in web and RGB logos. These darker reds should only be used in
an on-screen situation where readability is an issue, and never for
printed publications.
These two darker reds have been added for use ONLY within the
logo in projected and web environments where, at small sizes the
red within the crest needs more definition.

BLISS – AMPERSANDThe Bliss italic font has an unusual ampersand & (Italic: &) Where possible especially in titles that use italic
font replace this with a non italic ampersand and put a 10% skew on it.
Example as is: &
Example 10% Skew: & Science & Engineering
Primary font – Bliss
Bliss is a fresh, modern, open feeling sans serif font. This font is
friendly and easy to read and should be used for all major external
publications and advertising.
Clarity of communication is its prime focus. Although Bliss has a
large family, only a select number of weights have been chosen.
These are indicated here.
This font is designed by Jeremy Tankard Typography Limited in
London, and must be purchased from him, directly via his website
www.typography.net
This font is intended for use by professional designers and is
not expected to be available on every staff member’s personal
computer. Arial is our preferred alternative.

Letterheads, business cards and compliment slips
Stationery
At the generic university level the stationery system is clean and
crisp, with horizontal logos. The exception is the business card
which obviously uses a vertical logo. This is a far more practical
application given the space available.

STUDY LIVE PLAY
Far enough from home to not have to clean your room.
Close enough to still have your laundry done.
Live on campus and you can concentrate on enjoying your first year
at uni without the headache of landlords, leases and lazy flatmates.
Waikato has four Halls of Residence, all on campus and all just a
short walk from lecture theatres, the library, the gym, shops, the pool
and other university facilities. Over 900 students live on campus
so it’s an excellent way to meet new people and make new friends.
A room in the halls comes with a built-in social life, from organised
events like balls, dinners and inter-hall sports competitions to impromptu
touch rugby on the fields. The halls have strong social, cultural and
sporting programmes and an academic support programme that’ll help
keep you on track with your studies.
The halls provide a safe, friendly and supportive atmosphere that will help
ease you into university life. Our residential staff are all students too, so
they’ll know the kind of issues you’ll face and how to figure them out.
Special needsWe can meet special requirements if there is sufficient demand.
Past examples include providing an alcohol-free area, a single-sex area,
a Kaupapa Māori unit and an international students area.

wish to live in an environment that fosters manaakitanga, whanaungatanga,
Te Reo Māori and tikanga Māori. A strong interaction between first-year
residents and senior residents living on these floors is also encouraged.
These elements provide a positive environment for academic development.
