1. STUDYING ANGLO-
AMERICAN LAW IN RE-
GENSBURG
Legal education traditionallyfocuses on the national law sys-tem. However, in the modernglobalized world, the traditionalhome-centredapproachdoesnotfittheneedsoflegalthinkinganymore. Lawyers must face thechallenges of multi- and trans-nationallegaltransactionsandproceedings. Thus, legal educa-tionhas to take intoaccount thegrowing importance of foreignlegalsystems.Duetothepoliticalandeconomicinfluence of the United States ofAmerica, working knowledge ofAnglo-American Law has be-comeanessentialpartofjudicialskills. Not only the work intransnational law firms and in-ternational organisations, butalso the day-to-day legal serviceof lawyers requires at least abasic knowledge of Anglo-AmericanLaw.In addition, the active participa-tionof lawyers in theprocessofharmonisation of EuropeanLaw requires at least a funda-mentalunderstandingofthecase
law-based methods of the Eng-lishlegalsystem.Fortheseventhtime,theFacultyofLawatRegensburgUniversityoffers a unique summer pro-gramme for lawyers and lawstudents interested in Anglo-AmericanLaw.The courses are designed notonly to prepare those who in-tend to participate in a LL.M.programmeintheUKorU.S.butalsotogiveaninsightintoAnglo-AmericanLawforanyonewhosework is orwill be related to theAnglo-Americanlegalsystem.The lectures will focus on anintroduction to Civil, Constitu-tionalandCriminalLawandwillbe taught by well-known lawprofessorsfromOxfordUniversi-tyaswellasU.S.judgesandlaw-yers.Participants will profit fromsmallcourses(max.40students)inoneofthemosthistoricplacesin Bavaria. The case studies inthe afternoons will provide acomparativeapproachonspecif-ic topics of law. They will betaught in cooperation betweenthe guest lecturers and profes-sors and lecturers from the Re-gensburgFacultyofLaw.Injoint

lectures they will present im-portant cases and their legalsolutions both in Anglo-AmericanandinGermanlaw.This comparative approachenhances the understanding ofhowAnglo-AmericanLawworks“in real life“ as well as the stu-dents’ abilities to work in aninterculturalcontext. In addition to the lectures, apresentation of LL.M.-studiesabroad and of anU.S. criminaltrialwillbeprovided.Regensburg, proud of its CelticandRomanoriginandthecentu-ry-long location of the well-known Perpetual Imperial Diet(“Immerwährender Reichstag”)of the Holy Roman Empire, hasnot only been declared a world
heritage site, but is also famousfor its cultural attractions, itsbeer gardens and its role as anambassador between East andWest.German and foreign studentsarestronglyencouragedtoapplyforthissummerprogramme.TheUniversity of Regensburg willcarefully select the participantstoguaranteeexcellentconditionsofstudying. All courses will be held in Eng-lish.KnowledgeofGermanisnota requirement. At theendof theprogramme, students will re-ceive a certificate of participa-tion.
