UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

2010-11 ANNUAL REPORT

LETTERWhat an incredible time to be an Oklahoma Sooner!

The academic year most recently concluded was another in aseries of champions for the Sooners. It included another Big 12Championship for the Sooner football team, the seventh in ourhistory and more than any other school in the league. It saw ourmen’s and women’s gymnastics teams finish second and third inthe NCAA Championship, respectively. It saw our softball teammake a trip to the Women’s College World Series, our sixth tripto the WCWS in our 17th consecutive year in the NCAA field, and our women’s basketball team, after going to the Final Fourtwo years in a row, make it to the Sweet 16 in its 12th consec-utive appearance in the NCAA, but it’s bigger than that.

It’s also about our men’s and women’s track and field teamproducing three national individual champions. It’s about ourmen’s cross country/track and field teams finishing fifth in theannual program rankings conducted by the USTFCCA and ourwomen’s outdoor track team finishing an all-time best of fourthat the NCAA Championships. It’s about the men’s and women’stennis teams advancing to the NCAA Championships as did thesoccer and volleyball squads. It’s about our men’s golf teamearning a trip to the NCAA for the first time since 2006 and ourwomen’s golf team advancing to the NCAA Regionals for thefirst time since 2008. It’s about outstanding individual perform-ances in wrestling and baseball and continuing success in ournewest sport, rowing. It’s about success throughout theprogram that helped us finish an all-time best of 10th in theLearfield Director’s Cup, an annual review of overall programexcellence. Again, though, it’s bigger than that.

It’s about record numbers of student-athletes making a 4.0 in theclassroom and another record-setting number when you look atstudent-athletes with at least a 3.0 GPA. It’s about Academic All-Americans and OU student-athletes who won major nationalawards for overall excellence. Yet, it’s bigger than that.

It’s about a continuing commitment to excellence … by ouradministration, our coaches, our support staff and most impor-

tantly, our student-athletes. Thepeople may change but thecommitment to succeed remainsa constant that all of us, includingyou as our supporters, embrace.

We have a Strategic Plan that weuse as the basis for everydecision we make in thisdepartment and part of that planis a commitment to our mission,Inspiring Champions Today,Preparing Leaders for Tomorrow. That mission will not change andour core values, the pathway tothat mission, are at the heart ofevery decision that is made.

This booklet reviews the pastyear and how our efforts, made possible through yourunchanging support, have aligned with our core values and ourmission. Our Strategic Plan is a living, breathing document andthis report will demonstrate how the working parts of that planhave advanced our mission. Still, it is bigger than that.

This booklet will show each of you how your efforts, combinedwith those of our staff and student-athletes, come together tomake the sum greater than its parts. We are all in this efforttogether and that’s the big story of Sooner Athletics. We lookforward to continuing to celebrate our success with you as weembrace the challenge of measuring up to our Strategic Plan.
