CourseOverviewCourseDescriptionThiscourseencouragesyoutodevelopanewanddifferentwayofspeakingandthinkingaboutmusicanditsrelevancytoallcultures.Studentswilllearnthewaystolistenforandunderstandthemeaningsthatarecommunicatedinallformsofmusicacrossarangeofhistorical,cultural,andsocialcontexts.ConsideringWesternandnon-Westernmusicalike,studentswilldevelopproficienciesinverballydescribingandreflectingonthosemeanings.Ourdiscussions,assignments,andothercourseactivitieswillfollowtwomainideologicalthreads:(1)whatmeaning(s)musiccommunicates,and(2)whatcontext-specificrolesmusicplays.Wehopethatthroughoutthiscourseyouwilldevelopanawarenessandappreciationofthevitalrolethatmusichasplayedandcontinuestoplayinsocietyasawhole(andinpeople’sindividual lives), and that you learn to considermusic critically in several dimensions beyond itsmost obvious role asentertainment. Since this course is intended for non-music-majors, previous experience with musical performance,includingtheabilitytoreadnotatedmusic,isnotrequiredorexpected.Therearenoprerequisitesforthiscourse. CourseObjectivesMUMH1610ispartoftheUniversityCoreCurriculum,whichisdesignedtogiveallgraduatingstudentsbasicintellectualcompetenciesinreading,writing,speaking,listening,criticalthinkingandcomputerliteracy.Thiscorebodyofknowledgerequiresstudyinthetoolsoflanguageandthought,mathematics,naturalsciences,socialandbehavioralsciences(includingU.S.historyandpoliticalscience),visualandperformingarts,andhumanities.TheVisualandPerformingArtscomponentpromotesanawarenessofthescopeandvarietyofworksinthearts,criticalanalysisandformationofaestheticjudgments,andappreciationoftheartsasfundamentaltothehealthandsurvivalofanysociety.
AspartoftheCore,MUMH1610helpsyoudevelopfourcompetencies:(1)criticalthinking,(2)communicationskills,(3)teamwork,and(4)socialresponsibility.ToreachthesegoalsinMUMH1610,wewillchallengeyoutoquestionassumptionsandargumentsaboutmusicbyengagingwithvarioustypesofmediaandliterature.Wewillalsoencourageyoutomakeconnectionsbetweentheconceptswestudyinthisclassandothercontextsthroughvariousassignmentsandactivities.Wewillmeasureyourdevelopmentofthesefourskillsbyyourabilitytodothefollowing:

- Communication (CO2): Youwilldevelopcommunication skills thatexplainand summarizemusicalexperiencesfromdiversehistoricalandculturesperspectives,whilerecognizingandexaminingyourownpersonalresponses.
- Social Responsibility (CO3): You will evaluate a variety of contexts for music, considering both historical andmulticulturalperspectives, inordertodevelopasenseofsocialresponsibility.Byinvestigatingmusicthat isfarremovedfromyouownculturalperspective,youwillacknowledgeandapplyvariousperspectives;summarizeanddevelopnotionsofcivicresponsibility;andobservepersonaldevelopment.

FinancialAidandSatisfactoryAcademicProgress
