History• 1927: September 12- first 86 students attended Buncombe
County Junior College• 1934: Due to Depression, financial support for the college
was withdrawn. City School System provides financial support• 1936: chartered as Asheville-Biltmore College; accreditied by
US Department of education• 1940: Due to population pressures, college is forced to move
to Asheville Normal and Teacher’s School• 1942: College moves to former County Home for Children• 1957: Becomes first two-year college in NC to receive state
funds

• 1959: Groundbreaking on Seely’s Castle for Phillips Hall• 1963: becomes a senior institution authorized to offer
baccalaureate degrees • 1969: Joins the University of North Carolina System and is
chartered as The University of North Carolina at Asheville• 1984: Honors Program founded• 1895: First fraternity (Pi Lambda Phi) and sorority (Alpha Xi
Delta) chartered
