Dear Dr* Coohran,The Director asked me to make enquiries
about Mr. J.R. van der Merwe, as requested in your letter of 8 February, but we can find no traoe of him. No ono of that name is known at 11 Welman Avenue, Newolare, nor has tho local minister ever heard of the family.
Would it be possible to have further information, such a3 the schools he attended, church affiliation etc? Inquiries have been made widely and can go no further without fresh information.
With kind regards.
Yours sincerely,

8th February, 1963
The Director,S.A. Institute of Race Relations, P.O. Box 97,JOHANNESBURG,Transvaal.
Dear Sir,We have a preliminary year coloured, student, Mr. J.R.
Van Der Merwe who lives at 11 Welman Avenue, Newclare, Johannesburg, whom we are wishing to help if it is possible to do so.
Mr. Van Der Merwe has completed his preliminary year of study in the Faculty of Medicine and has been promoted to the First Year. Owing tcT'the1’ fact that he is in debt to the University for tuition ard residence fees to the extent of R2i43, he has been told that he cannot attend the first year of study until this debt has been settled. It is possible that we may find some benefactor who is prepared to assist him financially, but it is essential that he must have some resources upon which he can rely if he is to take the 7 year University course. Would it be asking too much of you for you to give us a report on Mr. Van Der Merwe*s circumstances and background, to give us some idea as to what length we must go to assist him. One thing is certain, he is not a brilliant student, and it is quite possible that somewhere along the line he may fail and it may take him longer than 7 years to complete his course.Any information which you can give us which may help us to make a decision concerning Mr. Van Der Merwe will be very much appreciated.

There is an element of urgency about this matter as the 2nd. year course starts at the end of this month and we would like to he in a position to make an early decision whether or not to register Mr. Van Der Merwe.
Yours faithfully,
C.McN. Cochran ASSISTANT REGISTRAR
The Vice-Principal,University of tko Witwatersrand,Milner Park,J OH A . N5S51TRG .Sear Olyn,
I have been trying to get you on the telephone for one or tiro days but you seem to he very, very engaged. I was not a matter of importance, hut I did promise Dr. Munchi to make the inquiry. He has a daughter, Miss Fazela Munohi, who is anxious to do medicine. Apparently ehe has acquired a Ministerial permit hut I understand that she has been rejected by the University already.
Dr. Munchi heard that two other Indians, Patel and Bhult, had withdrawn from the medical course and he was wondering whether his daughter, Miss I’unohi, could fill one of these places.
I promised I would make inquiries hut I did not hold out any hope. All good wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Quintin Whyte Director.

Mr Quintin Whyte,Director,South African Institute of Race Relations, P.O. Box 97,Johannesburg.
Dear Quinton,At the time that I received your letter of 21st March,
1963, I tried to get you on the telephone but you seemed to be equally engaged.
I would have said that there was hardly any chance for Miss Munchi to be admitted to medical studies. The competition for our non-White quota is extremely severe (more than 80 applicants for 8 places) and only really distinguished applicants have any chance at all. I do not remember seeing Iss Munchi*s name on the reserve list but in any case I doubt whether a student would be admitted as late as the fourth week in March.
With best wishes,
Yours sincerely
I. Glyn Thomas, Yice-Principal.
