And Noteworthy...

Alberta Mathematics 30-1/30-2The High School Mathematics curriculum changed effective Fall 2010. The fi rst Mathematics 30-1 diploma exams will be administered in January 2013. Mathematics 30-1 replaces Pure Mathematics 30. Mathematics 30-1 will be a prerequisite for all U of L courses that currently specify Pure Mathematics 30 or equivalent—with the exception of Computer Science 1620, Computer Science 1820, and Statistics 1770, which will require either Mathematics 30-1 or 30-2. Students are strongly encouraged to complete Mathematics 30-1. Instead of Mathematics 30-1, students may use U of L’s Mathematics 0500.

Faculty of Management Direct Entry

There is no longer a requirement of one year of studies in pre-Management before entry into the Faculty of Management. Students will be admitted directly into the Faculty of Management. Students will also be directly admitted to the B.A./B.Mgt., B.Sc./B.Mgt., B.F.A./B.Mgt., and B.H.Sc./B.Mgt. Combined Degrees programs. See p. 18 for admission requirements to the Faculty of Management.

ApplyAlberta

Alberta Post Secondary Application System

The U of L uses ApplyAlberta, which is a secure online application system that allows students to apply to one or more of Alberta’s public colleges, universities and technical institutes through a common starting point and to authorize the transfer of their Alberta high school or post-secondary transcripts. See p. 30 for details.

TIPS FOR COUNSELLORSAdmission Requirements v.s. Prerequisite RequirementsThe courses given for each program (with the exception of programs in the Faculty of Health Sciences ) are NOT required for admission purposes but are necessary to meet prerequisite requirements for courses in the program. Some programs do not require high school courses to meet prerequisites in the program. However, students are still required to present high school courses for admission purposes. See also Programs that DO NOT Require Prior Mathematics and Programs that DO Require Mathematics After Admission at www.uleth.ca/ross/hs_prereqs/math/math_requirements.html.

Required v.s. Recommended CoursesCertain high school courses, although not specifi cally required, are recommended either because the high school course is recommended background for one or more courses required in the major or because completion of the high school course will allow students more options when choosing major requirements. See the online version of this chart at www.uleth.ca/ross/hs_prereqs/program/all.html to access specifi c information regarding why a particular high school course is recommended.

NEW TRANSFER (COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY) ADMISSION Applicants who have completed three or more transferable semester courses at one or more post-secondary institutions will be considered as New Transfer applicants. To qualify for general admission, New Transfer applicants must have an admission average of at least 2.00 on the U of L 4.0 GPA scale, calculated on all transferable courses. Admission requirements vary depending on the number of transferable, post-secondary courses completed as indicated below:

eight or more transferable courses

Admission GPA of at least 2.00 on the U of L 4.0 GPA scale, calculated on all completed, transferable, post-secondary courses.

High school credentials are not required.

fi ve or more (but fewer than eight) transferable courses

Basic high school admission average of at least 60%, calculated on fi ve appropriate 30-level high school courses (see p. 6).

Admission GPA of at least 2.00 on the U of L 4.0 GPA scale, calculated on all completed, transferable, post-secondary courses.

at least three (but fewer than fi ve) transferable courses

Basic high school admission average of at least 60%, calculated on fi ve appropriate 30-level high school courses (see p. 6).

Admission average is determined using a weighted average of the high school admission average and all completed, transferable, post-secondary courses.

Upon admission, students are assigned transfer credit on a course-by-course basis for eligible post-secondary work. Transfer of credit serves to reduce the number of courses which must be completed at the U of L in order to complete a program of studies.

Applicants to programs leading to any Combined Degrees may be admitted directly to these programs, or may need to seek admission to programs in the Faculty of Arts and Science (for Combined Degrees programs including the B.A. or B.Sc.), the Faculty of Fine Arts (for Combined Degrees programs including the B.F.A. or B.Mus.), or the Faculty of Management (for Combined Degrees programs with B.Mgt.) in order to complete admission requirements.

The University may offer admission to highly qualifi ed transfer students prior to the application deadline. Applicants are encouraged to apply well ahead of the deadline.

Refer to the Programs Available to New Transfer Students online (www.uleth.ca/ross/admissions/nt_prog.html). Also, see Part 1 - Admissions in the current U of L Calendar available online (www.uleth.ca/ross/calendar/part01.pdf).

Admission Priority of New Transfer StudentsAll transferable post-secondary work completed by New Transfer applicants will be used in determining admission priority.

The admission average for New Transfer applicants presenting fi ve or more transferable courses is calculated on all completed, transferable, post-secondary courses. For New Transfer applicants presenting only three to fi ve courses, the admission average is a weighted average of the high school admission average and the post-secondary admission average.

Subject to individual Faculty policies, admission priority is assigned to New Transfer applicants on the basis of GPA on all transferable courses.

DEGREE HOLDERSApplicants who have completed, with satisfactory grades, one or more academic degrees from a recognized university, will be considered for admission to an After Degree program at the U of L. For most Faculties, the length of a second degree program is approximately 20 semester courses. To be eligible for consideration, the declared U of L program/major must be dissimilar from any degree already completed. Courses completed in the fi rst degree, and courses completed since the fi rst degree, may affect the content and may reduce the number of courses required to complete subsequent undergraduate degrees. Please contact the Academic Advisors in the appropriate Faculty/School for further information (see p. 38).

Applied and Technology DegreesApplicants presenting Applied or Technology Degrees from recognized colleges or technical institutes in Canada with GPAs of 2.00 or higher on the U of L 4.0 GPA scale are guaranteed admission to fi rst degree, undergraduate non-quota programs. These applicants will be considered for admission to quota programs according to their qualifi cations as transfer students.

Transfer credit awards will be according to regular University procedures and subject to University policies including those pertaining to residency, major, and time limits.

Applied and Technology Degrees are not normally considered to be a basis of admission for second degree or graduate studies programs.

Alberta Colleges or Institutes of TechnologyThe University will consider applicants who have completed one year or more of studies at a recognized Alberta College or Institute of Technology and are recommended by that institution for University admission.

For admission requirements, the University accepts courses offered by colleges which are deemed to be equivalent to Alberta high school 30-level courses (see p. 6).

HOW TO APPLY FOR ADMISSIONThere are two ways to apply to the University of Lethbridge:

Home School ApplicantsRegardless of their citizenship or residency, Home School applicants will be considered according to the curriculum they followed.

For example:

A high school applicant who studied Alberta curriculum is expected to meet the requirements of an Alberta high school applicant (see p. 6).

The applicant should challenge the departmental examinations in courses where such examinations exist to provide grades in the subjects challenged. By this means, an applicant will be considered for admission who presents fi nal grades in fi ve distinct subjects (see p. 6).

A high school applicant from British Columbia should challenge the provincial examinations in courses where such examinations exist to provide grades in the subjects challenged. An applicant will be considered for admission who presents fi nal grades in fi ve distinct subjects (see p. 6).

An applicant who presents both a high school diploma and appropriate, satisfactory standardized test scores, either ACT, or both SAT I and II will be considered for general admission (see p. 29).

Self-reported gradesApplicants provide fi nal grades for Grade 12 courses already completed and estimate marks for courses in progress and courses they plan to complete based on Grade 12 mid-term marks or Grade 11 fi nal marks.

If an applicant is not admissible based on self-reported grades, the Admissions Offi ce will require interim transcripts in order to make the prediction of grades and the fi nal admission decision.

Graduate ProgramsApplications for Master’s and Ph.D. programs are available online (www.uleth.ca/ross/forms.html). The application fee for initial admission to a master’s or Ph.D. program is $100.

TIPS FOR COUNSELLORS

Education Combined Degree ProgramsApplicants may not apply directly into the Faculty of Education from high school. Interested students should initially apply to a pre-Bachelor of Education Combined Degrees program (pre-B.A./B.Ed., pre-B.Sc./B.Ed., pre-B.F.A./B.Ed., pre-B.Mus./B.Ed., pre-B.Mgt./B.Ed.).

ApplyAlberta:

• Makes it easy for students to apply to one or more post-secondary institutions. The fi rst time students use ApplyAlberta they will create a profi le with their personal and academic history. This information is fi lled in automatically on each of the Alberta post-secondary applications they complete.

• Facilitates the transfer of academic transcripts. Through ApplyAlberta, students authorize institution(s) to request the transfer of their Alberta Education high school and/or post-secondary transcripts. Students will not be charged a fee for transcripts transferred through ApplyAlberta.

• Speeds up the application process. The ability to apply to multiple institutions without having to re-enter basic information and to authorize transcript transfers will save students time.

See www.applyalberta.ca for more information.

TIPS FOR COUNSELLORSOFFER OF ADMISSION

Timeframe

Registration for the Fall semester typically starts around the end of April. Students who have been offered admission will normally receive their registration package from us in the mail in mid-April. A student can register on or after their assigned date, but the earlier the better for course selection.

Program Planning Guide (PPGs)

The Program Planning Guide lists all required courses and includes a suggested sequence plan. This guide is included in their registration package and is also available online (discover.ulethbridge.ca/counsellor and www.uleth.ca/ross/ppgs/ppg.html).

General Liberal Education Requirement (GLER)

All U of L students must complete the General Liberal Education Requirement (GLER). This involves taking at least four courses from three different areas: Fine Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences. The required courses in a student’s program typically fulfi ll some of the GLER requirement, so the Program Planning Guide,Timetable, and U of L Calendar should be used to determine which additional GLER courses should be taken. Refer to the current U of L Calendar at the end of Part 4, Academic Regulations for more information. The Calendar is available online (discover.ulethbridge.ca/counsellor and www.uleth.ca/ross/calendar/calendar.html).
