Cherilyn G. Murer, J.D., C.R.A., founder and president of Murer Consultants, Inc. – celebrating its 25th anniversary – was inducted into the Chicago Area Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame at a dinner at the Chicago Hilton & Towers in downtown Chicago on Thurs-day, February 25, 2010. Established 25 years ago by the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, the award recognizes innovative business leaders who have demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit and business talent by founding or growing their respective businesses. Murer Consultants has provided guidance and counsel to more than 500 hospitals and healthcare systems in 42 states; navigating the complex regu-latory, strategic and financial issues facing healthcare today. She and her business partners, Michael Murer and Lyndean Brick, have co-authored five healthcare textbooks published by McGraw-Hill. Ms. Murer also holds an appointment on the faculty of the University of Illinois at Chicago College

of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Law in the Department of Family Medicine.

Developing a Research Agenda for Women’s Health in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. In March Drs. Memoona Hasnain and Stacie Geller, UIC Center for Research for Women & Gender and the National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, visited Jazan Medical College, Saudi Arabia. The purpose of the visit was to conduct an initial needs assessment for developing a women’s health research agenda and capacity building for the Jazan region. Dean Hussein Ageely and Dr. Ibrahim Bani of Jazan Medical College invited and organized the visit The initial site visit included a number of meetings and focus group discussions with

various stakeholders, including key university leaders, teaching faculty, female and male medical students, health care providers, administrators, and female patients. A one day research workshop for medical students and faculty also was

conducted.

Linda Morgan, MD, MPH (left) and Sandra Kim (right), Clinical Pharmacist presented a lecture on “Travel Medicine for Primary Care” at the Chicago Medical Society Conference held on March 18-

19, 2010. Dr. Morgan was also invited to speak at the Black History Month event held by UIC-COM Chapter of the Student National Medical Association on February 15, 2010. The title of her presentation was “Having a Vision: Opportunities in Community Medicine and Public

Health”.

Nancy Miranda, MD (left: 4th in 1st row, center) along with John Williams, MD from Emergency Medicine and 5 other medical staff members from Children’s Memorial Hospital, University of Chicago, Rush University and Access Community Health Network were part of a Chicago volunteer team who left on March 11, 2010 to Haiti for two

weeks of service with the International Medical Corps to help after the disaster earthquake.

Congratulations Diane Kondratowicz, PhD, Karen Connell, MS, Memoona Hasnain, MD, MHPE, PhD and everyone in the DFM who contributed to the application for the Departmental Outstanding Teaching/Participation Award through the COM Department of Medical Edu-cation. The DFM has been awarded $25,000 on behalf of the Board and the members of the Academy for Excellence in Teach-

ing.

Residency Program Hosts 1st Annual Overnight Retreat

On March 9th & 10th, the residency program hosted the 1st annual overnight retreat at Devil's Head Resort in Merrimac, Wisconsin. The residents, faculty & staff, and their families enjoyed a relaxing din-ner on Tuesday evening. Wednesday morning residents and faculty participated in a workshop led by facilitator Carol Jungman. Following the morning workshop, the residents joined by Drs. Hyderi, Potter, and Shah, braved the foggy ski slopes and skied in 60 degree weather! Overall, the retreat was very beneficial as it generated many great ideas to help improve the residency program and it created many

unforgettable memories.
