Notes: (a) These figures were compiled as at the division of the Michaelmas Term.(b) At Cambridge the Tripos courses in Chemical Engineering and History of Art, can be taken by undergraduates who have passed a part

of another Tripos at the end of their first or second year. However, Affiliated Students are an exception to this rule. The table thereforeshows a few such students reading these courses. These students represent only a very small part of the numbers reading these Triposcourses each year.

Candidates who took examinations as candidates ‘not for Honours’ (with the exception of Part III ofthe Mathematical Tripos), candidates who have received allowances made by the ApplicationsCommittee of the Council and candidates who have spent the year studying at MassachusettsInstitute of Technology

2. In Part III of the Mathematical Tripos, Part II of the Manufacturing Engineering Tripos, Part II ofthe Electrical and Information Sciences Tripos, and Part IIB of the Engineering Tripos a pass withdistinction or merit has been counted as Class I, a pass as Class II, division 1. In the case of Part II ofthe Mathematical Tripos this applies whether or not the candidate is a candidate for Honours.

3. The class obtained in each language by candidates entered for two languages for Part IA of theModern and Medieval Languages Tripos has been counted as half a class.

Notes:(a) * The introduction of Part IA of the Natural Sciences Tripos in 1966 and the undividing of Part IA of the Medical and Veterinary Sciences

Tripos in 2001 accounts for the large increases in the undivided Second Class. Conversely, the division of the Second Class of the MathematicsTripos in 1995 led to a substantial decrease.

(b) † Candidates who were taking examinations as candidates ‘not for Honours’ and candidates receiving allowances from the ApplicationsCommittee of the Council were excluded from the 1972 statistics (and thereafter) although they had been included in previous years. Candidates forthe LL.B. Examination were included in 1972 for the first time, but the LL.M. Examination was excluded from 1999. Candidates for the B.Ed.Degree were excluded from the statistics for the years 1972–79 inclusive, but, with the introduction of the Education Tripos, have been includedfrom 1980.
