Recognition as it Applies to Belonging

In previous articles, topics on “belonging” dealt with the 4-H family and how members and leaders help each other feel a part of the organization. We have discussed new families, respecting differences and valuing individual strengths, how competition relates to 4-H and creating safe environments. This article will speak about recognition and how it applies to the sense of “belonging”.

Just as “belonging” is an essential element of 4-H, it is also known to be a basic human need. 4-H clubs can provide the group setting so members and leaders feel connected to the people around them and that they are in a safe and supportive environment. Participants feel that they BELONG. Where better than in this environment for the participants to be acknowledged for their contributions to the group – recognized for what they have contributed, learned, shared, achieved.

The National 4-H Recognition Model states “. . . 4-H is a human development program designed to foster a sense of confidence, a feeling of accomplishment, and a heightened level of competence. (http://wwww.national4-hheadquarters.gov/library/4h recmo.pdf) The careful, creative, balanced use of recognition is an element of successful programs.” Recognition in 4-H is the encouragement and support for learning. It comes as a result of participation in educational experiences. Each member should be appreciated for their efforts and contributions.

There is no one way to encourage and support all young people. Members come from varied backgrounds and with different experiences and expectations. For some youth intrinsic, or internal, recognition is far more powerful than any extrinsic recognition.

Club leaders are encouraged to draw upon a variety of ways to recognize members, both in front of the club and individually. Members can be singled out for achievements at the fair or field days, as well as contributions they have made to the operation of their club. Project leaders should also take time during meetings to let members know their efforts are noticed and respected.

Icebreaker Game

“Commonalities and Uniquities”

Space needed:

Indoors

Size of Group:

Groups of 5-8.

Object of Game:

A group team-building activity in which people identify ordinary things that everyone has in common, along with interesting characteristics that are unique to a person in the group.

Directions:

Form groups of five to eight people and give them two sheets of paper and a pencil or pen. The first part of the activity is Commonalities, where each subgroup compiles a list of the things they have in common. In order for it to make the list, it must apply to everyone in the subgroup. You want to avoid writing things that people can see (e.g. “everyone has hair” or “ we are all wearing clothes”). Try to get them to dig deeper. After about 5 minutes, have a spokesperson from each subgroup read their list.

Then, depending on your goals for the session, you can have half of each subgroup rotate to another group for Uniquities or you can leave everyone in the same group. On the second sheet of paper have them record uniquities, meaning that each item applies to only one person in the group. The group tries to find at least 2 uniquities for each person. After 5-7 minutes, you can have each person say one of their uniquities or have a person read them one by one, having others try to guess who it was. (Again, you want to go beyond the superficial, avoid those things that people can readily see.) This is an excellent team-building activity because it promotes unity, gets people to realize that they have more in common than they first might realize. The awareness of their own unique characteristics is also beneficial in that people can feel empowered to offer the group something unique.
