Overview of Honors

Iowa State University sponsors both a University Honors Program (UHP) and a First-Year Honors Program (FHP). The UHP, to which any qualified undergraduate may apply, em-phasizes the development of an enriched, individualized program of study that meets each student’s needs, interests, and abilities. FHP provides an introduction to Honors education at Iowa State for highly talented entering first-year students.

The UHP aims to provide• An intellectually stimulating environment for high-ability, high-achieving students.• Ways for excellent students to make the most of their college experience by achieving a

degree of breadth and depth not always available to undergraduates.• Opportunities for interaction between faculty and students through courses and semi-

nars, undergraduate research experiences, and mentoring.

The Program of Study (POS)

A major way for UHP members to make the most of college is by devising an individualized program of study (POS). That is, Honors students define their educational and career goals and develop a set of courses and out-of-class experiences (for example, study abroad) that help them achieve those goals The POS documents the challenge and rigor of their studies in addition to fulfillment of university, college, and major requirements.

Since Honors stresses individuality and flexibility, no two students’ programs will be identi-cal. Accordingly, students – in consultation with their advisers – may be creative in design-ing their POS. The Honors committee of the student’s college is responsible for approving the POS. These committees evaluate the POS for depth, breadth, and incorporation of Hon-ors requirements – sometimes called Honors character – and allow deviations from require-ments (for example, taking a higher-level course without prerequisite) when they are rele-vant to a student’s educational plans and meet accepted standards.

Planning an Honors POS. As UHP students determine their goals and devise a POS that meets them effectively, they may use a variety of approaches, including;.• Enrollment in Honors courses or Honors sections of regular courses, including courses

with standing Honors contracts (details below).• Conversion of a regular course to an Honors course by reaching an agreement with the

instructor about differentiated learning (details below).• Enrollment in advanced courses (including graduate courses) in place of typical electives.

This is done in consultation with the instructor of the course and the student’s adviser.• Enrollment in Honors seminars. Generally, seminars count as electives but may be used

to fulfill group requirements (details below).• Developing a unique academic major. The student must declare a major in an existing

curriculum but may create a disciplinary or interdisciplinary major within it.• Developing new minor or set of minors, generally with an interdisciplinary emphasis.• Engaging in independent study and/or research. Often this independent work forms the

basis of a student’s Honors project.

Good Standing. To remain in Honors, FHP students must submit a letter of intent indi-cating that they will continue into UHP, by the announced deadline. In addition, all UHP students must maintain good standing through the following:• Attending an Honors orientation session in their college• Maintaining an ISU GPA of 3.5 or better• Submitting a Program of Study no later than four semesters before graduation (generally,

end of sophomore year. Students who join UHP with between 48 and 60 credits remain-ing to graduation submit the Program of Study at the time of their application.)

• Showing progress toward completing Honors coursework• Submitting an Honors Project Proposal, usually with 30 credits remaining to graduation,

at the end of junior year/beginning of senior year• Completing and presenting an Honors Project.

Elements of a Program of Study

Honors Courses. Many courses are established as Honors courses, for example Engl 302H, Business Communication, Math 166 and 265 (Calculus II and III), Physics 221, and so on. To encourage discussion and student-professor interaction, Honors sections often have rela-tively lower enrollments.

3 Honors Program Graduation Requirements

IntroductionCourses Converted for Honors Credit. Honors students may convert any graded 3-credit course for Honors credit (also referred to as "contracting a course for Honors"). The student and instructor come to an agreement regarding the nature of work the student will be doing to warrant an H designation. An online form outlining the agreement is submitted for approval by the instructor and the Honors Program Administrative Director and upon successful completion, an H will be added to the course number on the student’s record.

Honors Seminars. A central element in the Honors Program is the Honors seminar. Most students will take two or three seminars, as required by their college, but many take more than are required. In fact, the popularity of Honors seminars has led to limiting students to a maximum of two seminars per semester. Each semester’s seminars are posted on the Honors Program website a few weeks before registration.

Honors seminars are offered for one or two credits, normally meet once a week for one or two hours, and are graded satisfactory/fail. To promote discussion and student-faculty in-teraction, enrollment is usually capped at 17. Generally there are no prerequisites other than student interest. Students in a given seminar usually represent a wide range of disciplines, thus benefiting from interaction with peers with different academic backgrounds.

Honors Projects. The culminating research project is integral to the Honors Program. These projects allow students to work closely with faculty on a scholarly or creative project. Stu-dents develop their topic and work under the supervision of a project advisor with exper-tise in the field. The project adviser and the Honors committee of the student’s college must approve the project proposal and a report of the completed project

Thanks to private gifts to the Honors Program, research grants of up to $750 are available to help students defray expenses of their Honors projects. Grant applications are reviewed by a subcommittee of the University Honors Committee, which makes recommendations on funding to the full committee.

Honors Poster Presentation and Reception. At the end of each semester, the University Honors Committee and the Honors Student Board co-sponsor the Honors Project Poster Presentation and Reception for graduating Honors students and other students who have completed Honors-sponsored research. At the Poster Presentation, Honors students display their projects and share their experiences with other Honors students and the university community. The Honors Society of Phi Kappa Phi co-hosts the spring presentation and re-ception. At the spring presentation, the W. Robert Parks Honors Commendations and Hon-ors Student Board Scholarship recipients are announced.

Requirements At-A-GlanceThis is a condensed version of the requirements listed in the basic document of each college’s Honors Program.

All colleges have these requirements in common:• You should plan to take at least two Honors courses and

two Honors seminars during your time at ISU. This is acurrent requirement in most colleges and likely will soon berequired for all.

• You may apply to your college’s Honors Program if you haveat least 48 credits remaining before graduation. (On a stan-dard four-year program, this generally means that applica-tions must be submitted no later than the fall of your junioryear.)

• You must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50or higher.

• You need to submit a Program of Study to the chair of yourcollege’s Honors Committee (see resource list below), typi-cally at the end of sophomore/beginning of junior year.

• You need to complete an Honors Project; project formsare typically due at the beginning of your senior year (twosemesters before graduation). Most colleges require studentsregister for a minimum number of research credits.

The goal of the programof study is to promote development of a highly individualized academic program for eachHonors student through a thorough evaluation (and complete redesign if necessary) of thestudent’s curriculum to provide a wider range of subjects and/or to explore certain areas moredeeply. The revised program of study must provide both depth and breadth of academic ex-periences comparable to (and hopefully exceeding) the academic requirements of the curric-ulum, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the University. However, the HonorsProgram will follow a liberal policy on the waiving of requirements for graduation (exceptfor the fixed total number of hours required) for Full Members of the Honors Program. Therevised program of study, once approved, will become the graduation contract of the studentand supercede all curricular, college, and(or) university requirements. Any changes to the re-vised program of study must be approved by the Chair of the College of Agriculture and LifeSciences Honors Committee by submitting a Summary of Changes in Program of Study form.If these changes represent a major change of direction in the program, they must be approvedby the committee before the courses are begun.

Requirements by College: LASRequirements

LAS Honors Curriculum Requirements:Membership in LAS Honors requires students to develop a program of study (POS) that reflects the intellectual depth and breadth that distinguishes Honors curricula from the standard criteria for graduation. The POS must include the following:• A minimum of 60 credits at the 300-level• 2 Honors seminars (Hon 321 or 322)• 2 Honors courses or 500+ courses (minimum of 4 credits and does not include Engl 250H)

LAS Honors Timeline and Deadlines:The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Honors Committee recognizes that each student has their own path to graduation which may not include the traditional number of credits earned each term. As such, the committee determined the deadlines for Honors requirements by starting with a student’s term of graduation (G) and counting backwards from there. The table below outlines the deadlines for the various requirements for members of the LAS Honors Program. Some students might find that their educational plan does not work with this template; if you find yourself in this situation please contact the LAS Honors advising liaison at [email protected] for assistance devel-oping an appropriate set of deadlines.

All submission deadlines are September 21 or February 21 (or the school day following if the 21st falls on a weekend or holiday)

Requirements by College: LASProject

All students who graduate with Honors are required to complete an Honors Project. The goals of the Honors Project are to:

Enhance your future• Your project can be a special facet of your application to graduate or professional school.• Your project can show a future employer your ability to design and execute a project.

Enrich your academic experience• Your project can add a dimension to your program of study that non-honors students do not

have.• Your project can synthesize your major(s) and minor(s).• Your project can be a capstone integrating the knowledge and skills you have acquired during

your university experience.• Your project should contribute to the body of knowledge about your subject.

At the end of your project you will share your findings at the end of the semester Honors Poster presentation.

How to start the project proposal• You and your project adviser develop your project proposal. Your project adviser must be an

ISU faculty member. He/she should be someone you will enjoy collaborating with as yourproject evolves.

• The LAS Honors Committee must approve your project proposal before you begin your re-search.

• Your honors project topic should be in an area in which you have some background or exper-tise. It does not need to be in your major. The project should provide you with an intellectualchallenge above and beyond what a regular student would have.

How and when to submit your project proposal• Project proposals must be submitted at least two semesters before you graduate. Late propos-

als will not be accepted. Spring and summer graduates - September 21 of the preceding yearFall graduates - February 21

• You are welcome to submit earlier than the specified deadline. If you are planning to studentteach or study abroad during your final semester you should consider submitting and pre-senting earlier. If you want to start doing research as part of a summer experience, you shouldsubmit a preliminary project proposal before your start of your summer program.

• Submit one printed copy of your project proposal to 141 Catt Hall.
