HARTFORD GUIDEHARTFORD GUIDE
The University of Hartford is a fully accredited, independent,
nonsectarian, co-educational institution with the main campus located
on approximately 350 wooded acres in West Hartford, Connecticut.
About the University
The University offers educational and
career programs in 84 undergraduate
majors and 34 graduate degrees at
the masters and doctoral levels in
the liberal arts, sciences, business,
engineering, technology, art, music,
education and allied health professions.
Part of the institution dates back to
1877, when the first of its original three
schools was founded. The Hartford Art
School (1877), Hillyer College (1879),
and the Hartt School (1920) joined in
1957 to form the University of Hartford.
The university is presently composed
of seven degree-granting schools
and colleges: the College of Arts and
Sciences; College of Engineering,
Technology, and Architecture; College
of Education, Nursing, and Health
Professions; Hillyer College; the Barney
School of Business; the Hartford Art
School; and The Hartt School.
Approximately 7,200 students are
presently served by the university’s
various programs and are drawn from
43 states, and 60 foreign countries. The
current full-time undergraduate enrollment
is about 4,700 men and women. Sixty-
five percent of the freshman class is
from out of state with about 92% of
them living on campus. Students at the
University of Hartford benefit from small
classes and personal attention while
being offered a wide variety of majors,
extensive facilities, and a broad spectrum
of activities typical of large universities.
COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES
The College of Arts and Sciences is the
largest and most comprehensive college
in the University of Hartford. Its offerings
range from the humanities (history,
English, modern languages, philosophy,
art history) to the social sciences
(psychology, sociology, economics, and
politics and government), and physical
and natural sciences (biology, physics,
and chemistry). The College prides
itself on its diverse academic programs
including special programs such as
Criminal Justice, International Studies,
Rhetoric and Professional Writing,
Political Economy, and Judaic Studies.
Professors from all of the College’s
programs inspire you to think analytically,
to form your own conclusions, and to
express yourself clearly—the very best
preparation for careers and life. Students
in the College of Arts and Sciences can
not only take courses in other colleges at
the university, but also can do a second
major or minor to enrich their academic
experience and prepare for the future.
School of Communication
With the right mix of academic and
professionally-oriented coursework and a
broad array of communication courses, the
College of Arts and Sciences’ School of
Communication prepares you to graduate
ready to enter the work world and equips
you with the knowledge and skills to adapt
to change. You begin taking courses in
the core of the major in your first semester
and then select among specializations in
Advertising and Public Relations, Human
Communication Studies, and Media
and Journalism. You can get involved in
STN-2, the student television network;
WSAM, student radio; PRSSA, the local
Schools and Colleges
chapter of the Public Relations Student
Society of America; or the Informer, the
student weekly newspaper. Our students
also often are successful participants in
the American Advertising Federation’s
National Student Advertising Competition.
BARNEY SCHOOL
OF BUSINESS
Business Careers are global and dynamic.
The AACSB accredited Barney School of
Business provides students with a variety
of experiences to make them “career
ready” for the expanding opportunities
of the 21st century. We prepare men
and women to be leaders and decision
makers who act in socially responsible
ways in this global environment. Barney’s
curricular and co-curricular activities give
our graduates work experience through
internships, good communication skills,
the ability to use information technology
in solving problems, and understanding
of the global nature of today’s business.
Courses are taught in an interactive
manner with cases and projects to give
students hands-on learning opportunities.
HARTFORD ART SCHOOL
The faculty, students, and staff of the
Hartford Art School are committed to
helping each student explore the wide
range of possibilities available to the
accomplished artist and designer of today.
By providing the rigorous formal training of
a professional school with the University
of Hartford’s liberal arts core curriculum,
the Hartford Art School offers a
comprehensive approach to education

that develops the whole person. We
are dedicated to maintaining a dynamic
environment in which gifts are enhanced,
ideas are freely given and received, and
creativity is nurtured and celebrated.
The campus’ main art building houses
studios for painting, photography,
printmaking, two dimensional design,
and media arts. Adjacent buildings
provide space for programs in
ceramics, sculpture, three-dimensional
study, illustration, drawing, and
visual communication design.
The Hartford Art School is an institutional
member of the National Association
of Schools of Art and Design and the
National Portfolio Day Association.
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING,
TECHNOLOGY AND
ARCHITECTURE
Engineering Technology Programs
Like to know how things work? Learn how
to apply that knowledge to solve real-
life problems in a career in engineering
technology. As an engineering
technologist, you bridge the gap between
those who formulate the design and those
who implement it. You have the theoretical
background to work directly with the
engineer or the architect. Yet you also
have the practical, hands-on experience
to oversee the work of crafts people.
The demand for technologists with the
combination of theoretical and practical
knowledge is soaring. Technology
baccalaureate programs include
architectural, audio, computer, electronic,
or mechanical engineering technology.
The Architectural Engineering Technology
major offers students one of two tracks:
a studio-intensive track, or a track for
students interested in the building
professions. The studio-intensive track
is for qualified students who want to
become architects and may do so in
the University of Hartford’s Master of
Architecture program. The building
professions track is for students more
interested in such areas as the technology,
support, construction management,
and real estate development aspects
of the building professions.
The Audio Engineering Technology
major spans the three disciplines of
electronics, acoustics and music to
prepare students for careers in the
recording and music industries. The
program stresses the fundamentals of
electronics, music theory, harmony, and
sound technology. Students may elect
additional courses in music management,
radio, television, and business
administration for additional expertise
for their professional career. Graduates
of audio engineering technology
programs may work in technical and/or
support jobs toward creating systems
for maximum quality of sound.
Engineering Programs
If you’re interested in becoming one
of the engineers of the future, the
University of Hartford’s Engineering
programs serve as your launching pad.
Here you will find modern facilities, a
committed faculty, and quality programs.
You will learn the fundamentals of science
and engineering in small classes that
ensure you get individual attention and
assistance. Dedicated faculty members
who stay current in the field through active
research and consultation will lead your
classes. To enhance your engineering
opportunities, you will also take courses
offered through the other excellent
schools and colleges within the University.
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION,
NURSING AND HEALTH
PROFESSIONS
Step onto the path to a personally
rewarding career in the helping
professions through study in the College
of Education, Nursing and Health
Professions. Classroom experience goes
hand-in-hand with fieldwork in the Greater
Hartford community, often as early as
the first semester at the university. Rich
and varied practical experiences fuel
students’ desire to learn, explore, and
succeed, while complementing course
discussions, readings, and lectures.
Opportunities abound on campus for
education majors in University of Hartford
Magnet School, University High School
of Science and Engineering, Educational
Main Street, and the Jump Start project.
The college offers majors leading to
teacher certification in early childhood
education (grades K-6), integrated
elementary

(grades K-6), and special education
(grades K-12), and secondary English and
mathematics education (grades 7-12).
Our programs in health sciences
challenge students to apply their minds
and talents toward the goal of careers in
the health professions. Majors include a
combined Bachelor of Science in Health
Science (BS)/Doctor degree of Physical
Therapy (DPT), a combined Bachelor of
Science in Health Science (BS)/ Master
of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics
(MSPO); pre-chiropractic, pre-dental, pre-
optometry, pre-osteopathic medicine, pre-
pharmacy and pre-podiatry; radiologic
technology; respiratory care; and general
health science. The radiologic technology
program offers a choice of specialization
in MRI or CT. The respiratory care program
offers advanced clinical specialties of
neonatal/pediatric respiratory care,
pulmonary rehabilitation, and hyperbaric
medicine. The health science premedical
programs have affiliation agreements
with medical schools that allow qualified
students to complete baccalaureate and
doctoral degrees within seven years.
PLEASE NOTE:
*Nursing is a part-time degree completion program for students who have an associate’s degree in nursing.
*Undergraduate students entering the combined Bachelor of Science in health science-doctoral degree program in physical therapy may proceed into the graduate phase of physical therapy provided they complete the B.S. degree and maintain program standards.
THE HARTT SCHOOL
With innovative programs in music, dance,
and theater, The Hartt School is renowned
for preparing many of the world’s creative
artists and teachers in the performing
arts. In addition to performance majors in
instrumental, vocal, jazz, music theater,
theater performance (actor training),
and jazz, Hartt offers music theory, and
music and dance education majors, as
well as cutting-edge programs in music
production and technology and in music
and performing arts management.
Hartt’s faculty members are active
talented performers, educators,
composers, and scholars who serve as
mentors to their students. Master classes
are given each year and have included Joe
Wilder, Wynton Marsalis, Angel Romero,
James Galway, and Warren Jones.
Musicians may perform in large orchestral,
wind, or choral ensembles; solo
recitals; and music theater productions.
Hartt’s Performance 20/20 provides
a highly competitive, full-scholarship,
honors chamber music program for top
instrumental students. A partnership
in training with Connecticut Opera
provides vocal students the opportunity
to participate in activities with the
company, which may include roles or
understudying in its productions. A variety
of master classes and workshops are also
features of this important collaboration.
MULTIMEDIA WEB DESIGN
& DEVELOPMENT
What sets the MWD2 program apart from
computer science or MIS (Management
Information Systems) is its emphasis
on developing and combining skills
in computer technology, graphic arts
and information design as it is used for
creating, processing, and communicating
all types of information. MWD2 is
interdisciplinary in nature, with a
primary goal of preparing graduates for
working with Internet and Web-based
enterprises in business, education,
and government. You will have the
opportunity to tailor the curriculum to
your specific interests and goals with
specializations such as advertising,
marketing, media arts, multimedia
production, network administration,
and professional and technical writing.

HILLYER COLLEGE
As students make the transition to
college, a major challenge is to adapt
to the academic demands of their
courses while choosing a major and
preparing for success in their chosen
fields. Hillyer College offers a program
in which you can discover and realize
your own potential for success.
The Hillyer College program allows you to
complete many of the general education
courses required for a bachelor’s
degree and start course work on your
major. When you complete the Hillyer
program, you will be well prepared for
future success as a junior in one of the
University’s bachelor’s degree programs.
As a student in Hillyer College, you will
have a small-college experience in a
university setting. You will participate
in all aspects of university life while
enjoying the supportive and more
personal learning environment of a
small college. Most classes have 20
students or fewer, which enables you
to receive individualized attention from
an exceptional faculty. Not only are our
professors accomplished scholars, but
they are also dedicated to teaching and
enjoy working closely with students.

Campus LifeYou’ll meet over fifty enthusiastic and
dedicated students who will guide you
through orientation. During Summer
Orientation you will meet your academic
advisor, register for classes and have
lots of chances to meet other new
students. Just prior to the start of
classes, the university hosts Liftoff,
during which new students engage in
activity-packed days of social, academic,
and recreational events. Designed
to welcome you and your classmates
into the university community, Liftoff
is planned and organized for you by
faculty, staff, and students. Learn
more at hartford.edu/orientation.
Residence Halls
Ninety-two percent of first-year students
choose to live on campus because
students describe our housing as “the
best I’ve seen of any of the schools I
visited.” Here’s why: First-year students
primarily live in six newly renovated
residence hall complexes. Each complex
comprises several four-story buildings,
and every floor is a community of about
20 students sharing nine bedrooms
and two bathrooms. All buildings have
laundry facilities and study areas.
First-year students also have the
opportunity to live in Hawk Hall, a
Residential Learning Community, where
they are able to live among others who
share the same interests or even may be
taking courses together. The freshman
residence has four residential floors
and one activity floor. A residential
floor includes 24 double rooms, three
lounges, a laundry room, and separate
bathrooms for men and women.
The Student Success Center (SSC) is
where our students go to have questions
answered, get advice, share concerns,
learn about upcoming activities, get
connected with programming and
leadership opportunities on campus, or
just hang out in a friendly and supportive
location. The SSC provides the resources
and support necessary for a successful
transition to college and an enjoyable
and rewarding academic and social
experience at the university.
Division 1 SportsIf you enjoy playing competitive
sports or simply rooting for
your favorite teams from the
sidelines, you’ll find plenty to
cheer about at the University of
Hartford. We sponsor 18 different
Division I teams, representing
a broad range of sports for
both men and women. If you
would like to participate in
sports—without the pressure
of Division I play—you’ll want to
check out the university’s active
intramural sports programs

In college, you need certain academic
skills to succeed—like the ability to read
well, write clearly, and study effectively.
If you would like some help in further
developing these essential skills, you can
stop by the university’s Center for Reading
and Writing. Our supportive, professional
staff will work individually with you to
increase your proficiency in writing,
research, and reading comprehension
and speed, as well as studying and
test taking skills. If you need additional
assistance in mathematics classes, we
also offer a special Math Tutoring Lab

who are Juniors and Seniors. Tutoring
in other disciplines is also available
from the Student Success Center.
Practical help in choosing a career.
New students can also take advantage of
all the resources of our specially staffed

can help you identify your interests and
explore careers that match those interests.
Every year, the Career Center also hosts a
Career Fair, where you can meet informally
with representatives from different
employers and learn firsthand about the
career opportunities their companies offer.
When the time comes to find a job,
the Career Center can also help
you write your resume and develop
interviewing skills that will prepare you
to meet with the many on- and off-
campus recruiters who actively seek
out University of Hartford students.
