Reason for
Request: Over the last decade, next generation sequencing (NGS) has become a widely used approach to
understand and characterize biological processes. However, due to the rapid rise of this technology
most faculty, even within the life sciences, have little hands-on experience. This makes it
challenging for them to provide adequate training for graduate students.
This course addresses this gap by providing training in both the experimental design and practical
aspects of creating a library for NGS. The course will be of value to both life scientists and
biomedical engineers engaged in research involving NGS approaches. Furthermore the course will
also be open to Statistics, Mathematics and Computer Science graduate students who routinely

Prerequisite: None.
Registration Information: This is a partial semester course. Written consent of instructor. Credit
allowed for only one of the following: CM 505, CM 581A1, ENGR 505 or NSCI 505.
Description: Basic molecular biology including nucleic acid structure, function and manipulation.
Hands on experience in the common techniques used to quantify, quality control and manipulate
nucleic acids with an emphasis on the polymerase chain reaction.
Reason for
Request:
In recent years biologists have begun to generate enormous datasets of DNA sequences that require
extensive computational, mathematical and/or statistical expertise in order to be fully understood.
However, there are few students in these fields with adequate biology background to be full
participants in the design and analysis of these experiments. At the same time, engineers are
developing sensors that use nucleic acids as tools, but many of these researchers lack the necessary
molecular biology training to take full advantage of these approaches. This course aims to train non-
life scientists in the common techniques used to analyze and manipulate nucleic acids and giving
them a core understanding of the chemistry and function of these versatile molecules.

Department of Anthropology Link to CIM
Ph.D. in Anthropology
Reason for
Request:
The rationale to develop a Ph.D. program in anthropology with a focus on place, space and
adaptation is threefold. First, both existing and prospective graduate students have expressed a
desire to obtain a Ph.D. in anthropology from our department. Second, many of our faculty
members actively advise Ph.D. students from other departments as well as other universities;
faculty energies and student interest is better matched under the umbrella of a Ph.D. program in
anthropology. Third, an advanced graduate program that addresses the interrelationships between
place, space, and adaptation showcases our diverse faculty and their research interests and allows
the department to better integrate the disciplines of anthropology and geography. These foci and
their ability to frame hypotheses concerning human-environment interactions in the past and
present also place the program at the forefront of the anthropological sciences.

A minimum of 72 credits are required to complete this program.
Most students entering the Ph.D. program in anthropology will bring in 30 credits from a Master's program in
a related field. The above curriculum represents a total of 42 credits beyond the Master's level. If a
prospective student has less than 30 credits toward the program, an individualized curriculum plan will be
developed by working with primary advisor that will cover possible anthropology deficiencies.

Major in Economics
Reason for
Request:
This is a request to add additional statistics courses to the existing list of statistics courses that can
be used to meet the statistics requirement of the Economics major. These additional courses, STAT
307, STAT 311, and STAT 315, are considered equivalent to STAT 301 in that students are not
allowed to receive credit for more than one of these courses. Statistical skills are required by
Economics majors in order to be successful in ECON 335, Introduction to Econometrics, the
required and essential quantitative methods course of the Economics major. Each of the three
added statistics courses can serve as a prerequisite for ECON 335 and, therefore, should be added
to the list of courses that fulfill the statistics requirement of the Economics Program of Study.
Effective Fall 2017 Spring 2013 Economics majors must achieve a minimum grade of 1.670 (C-) in each of the economics courses counted toward
the major.

Major in Music (BA)
Reason for
Request:
The programs of study for all Bachelor's programs in music are being updated to reflect a change in
the music theory sequence. Students will cover the same content in the same number of credit and
contact hours each semester of their first two years as they do in the current programs, but in two
dedicated courses (written theory and aural skills), rather than one previously combined course to
allow a dedicated amount of instructional time to be specifically devoted to each set of skills.
Hence, both assessment and instructional efficiency will be improved. In addition, piano courses
are being added to the freshman year to cover skills previously introduced in the combined theory
course and to make consistent the core skills in all music programs (other programs already have
two semesters). The other minor fix is moving the semesters listed for MU 334 and MU 335, as
they are indicated in semesters in which the courses are not offered.

1 Students with previous keyboard experience may test out of MU 150 and/or MU 151B and replace with the same
number of one elective credit(s).
2 First-year voice students take MU 172A and MU 172B, then MU 272Q the second year for 2 semesters.
Instrumentalists take MU 272A-MU 272P or MU 272R-MU 272V on a major instrument for 2 semesters each
of the first 2 years.
3 Students must participate in an ensemble during each semester in which they are enrolled in MU 172A-
MU 172B or MU 272A-MU 272V. An additional four credits of ensembles are to be completed in semesters of
the student’s choosing for a total of eight credits. At least one semester during the program of study, this must be
achieved by taking MU 408 or another small ensemble.
4 Voice students take two three credits of electives. Instrumentalists take four five credits of electives.
5 Select enough elective credits to bring the program total to a minimum of 120 credits, of which at least 42 must be
upper-division (300- to 400-level).

Major in Music, Music Education Concentration, Choral Option
Reason for
Effective Fall 2017 2016 A minimum grade of C is required in all music courses used to satisfy the requirements of the BM in
Music, Music Education Concentration, Choral Option. Required EDUC courses must be completed
with a minimum grade of C.

MU 334: Music History I is approved for AUCC 4A and 4B and is specifically required in the other 11
Music programs. The content covered in MU 334 and MU 335 covers different time periods, so that is why
the department would like students to have the option to choose either course for their AUCC 4A/4B
requirement. Since MU 334 has previously been approved for 4A/4B, a separate course proposal is not
necessary to add MU 334 to this program with AUCC designation.

instrumentalists take MU 272A-MU 272P or MU 272R-MU 272V on a major instrument for 2 semesters each
of the first two years.
3 Students must participate in an ensemble during each semester in which they are enrolled in MU 172A-
MU 172B, MU 272A-MU 272V, and MU 472A-MU 472V. At least once during the program of study, this
must be achieved by taking MU 408 or through another small ensemble experience.
4 Instrumental majors only.

Reason for
The other minor fix is
reversing the semesters listed for MU 334 and MU 335, as they are flipped in the MCM.

Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance Link to CIM
Major in Music, Performance Concentration, String Pedagogy Option
Reason for
In addition, a second
semester piano course is being added to make consistent the core music offerings to match National
Association of Schools of Music standards (other programs already have a second semester).
Effective Fall 2017 2016 A minimum grade of C is required in all music courses used to satisfy the requirements of the BM in
Music, Performance Concentration, String Pedagogy Option.
