became new members of our SPIE student chapter.

In December 2010, Dr. Shui Liu finished his Ph.D study in our group under the advising of

Prof. John Sheridan.

In January 2011, Dr. Jinxin Guo was on a visiting trip to University of Science and

Technology Beijing, China.

In April 2011, SPIE

Europe Optics +

Optoelectronics

2011 was held in

Prague. Dr. Jinxin

Guo together with

former member Dr.

Michael Gleeson

and the chapter

advisor Prof. John

Sheridan attended.

Thanks to the

support of the

student chapter

officer travel

grant. This year a

student member

from our chapter

Mr. Dayan Li could

attend the

conference in San

Diego to present

his work and he

also helped us to build a closer relationship with the student chapters all over the world.

In September 2011, the Photonics Ireland Conference was held in Dublin. Ms. Laura Tobin,

Dr. James Ryle, Mr. Yue Qi and Mr. Shi Liu and was attending the event to present their

work on photopolymer materials, image processing etc.

In September 2011, Dr. Elen Tolstik from University of Jena came to visit us. We had a

nice conversation about the collaboration later.

the TU-ilmenau

student chapter.

From October

2011 to December

2011, Mr. Dayan Li

was studying as an

exchanging

student at

Ilmenau

University of

Technology (TU-

ilmenau), Germany.

During the same period, Dr. Jinxin Guo was doing research in Prof. Kalaichelvi

Saravanamuttu’s group in McMaster University, Canada. His research topic is “Collective

dynamics of populations of weakly correlated filaments of incoherent white light”.

(Right) Prof. Kalaichelvi Saravanamuttu

In 2012, Prof. Kalaichelvi Saravanamuttu

was invited by Prof. John Sheridan to give

a talk here in University College Dublin.

In April of 2012, UCD SPIE Student Chapter members Dr. Jinxin Guo and Mr. Yue Qi

participated in the SPIE Photonics Europe conference in Brussels. Each of the group gave an

oral or poster presentation presenting their research work. The event was well organized

and turned to be a huge success.

During the summer holiday 2012, a French student Jonathan Lefebvre from Lille was in an internship in here.

Student Chapter outreach event.

In July 2012, the UCD SPIE and

OSA Student Chapter has been

selected to give a workshop in the

Science Gallery in as part of Dublin

Mini Maker Faire for Dublin City of

Science. We were giving a workshop

on DIY (dye-sensitised) solar cells.

The Student Chapter was

demonstrating Dye-

Sensitised Solar Cells and promoting

the research carried out in UCD.

Around 10 members were participating in this event.

In August 2012, thanks in part

to funding received from the

SPIE, we were able to send over

our chapter members to the

SPIE’s Annual Photonics + Optics

meeting in San Diego, United

Sates. Mr. Shi Liu went over to

San Diego and gave oral

presentations on his research and

also attended the student

leadership training day. The

conference was a great success

and there was a considerable

emphasis on student event.

From August to November, Mr. Dayan Li was in an exchanging program at Ilmenau University of Technology (TU-ilmenau), Germany for the second time.

From September 2012, a German student Saskia Waechter was on a 16 weeks’ Erasmus

exchanging program studying in our group. She is currently seeking a post graduate position here.

FRIDAY NIGHT GAME SOCIAL: KHET

In December 2012, we were holding the Friday Night GAME Social that appeals to those of

people who like to combine strategy games with... lasers! Khet is an abstract strategy board

game in which two players fire lasers to strike and remove Egyptian-themed game pieces from

the board. Most of the pieces are mirrored on one or more sides, allowing players to alter the

trajectory of the laser beam each time it is fired by changing the position of the playing

pieces. When a piece is struck by a laser on a non-mirrored side, it is eliminated from the game.

The object is to hit your opponent's pharaoh with a laser, thereby claiming victory, all the while

protecting your own king.

In this way, Khet is similar to chess. However, with only four moveable pieces and much simpler

rules, Khet takes only a few minutes to master. Figuring out how to position your game pieces so

they'll reflect laser beams onto your opponent's vulnerable pieces, however, is another story

entirely. The good news is that since Khet only takes about 15 minutes to play, you'll have time to

employ new tactics again and again throughout the evening.

Since its debut in 2005, Khet has been getting plenty of attention, including a Mensa Select

Award in 2006, and a National Parenting Publications Award and iParenting Media Award in 2007.

This event was a great success with the participation of all the chapter members. 620 Euros was

spent on the purchasing of Khet and the related goods.

From year 2011 to date, Mr. Yue Qi has been carried out in collaboration with colleagues in the Tyndall Institute in Ireland (Dr. Michael Gleeson), the University of Alicante in Spain (Dr. Sergi Gallego) and at the University of Jena in Germany (Dr. Elen Tolstik and Prof. Richard Kowarschik). In February 2013, Mr. Haoyu Li went on a visiting trip to Prof. Xiudong Sun’s research group in Harbin Institute of Technology, China. In February 2013, Mr. Yue Qi participated in the Young Persons Lecture Competition 2013 Irish Final hosted by Materials Ireland in the Focas Institute in Dublin Institute of Technology. We are currently having an exchanging Ph.D student Michala Henzlova from Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic studying in our group until July. From year 2011 until now, we have more than 6 undergraduate students working in our group doing their final year project.

Upcoming Activities:

In April, Mr. Haoyu Li, Mr. Yue Qi will attend the SPIE Optics + Optoelectronics Conference in

Prague to present their new idea on the AA/PVA and PQ/PMMA photopolymer material. The

chapter advisor Prof. John Sheridan will be the chair of the conference again this year.

Mr. Shi Liu and Mr. Yue Qi have made the submission to this year’s SPIE Optics + Photonics

conference in San Diego.

We are running a number of team building social activities in conjunction with the UCD-OSA

Student Chapter.

Officer elections will be held soon. An outreach event will be held in the summer in the city

centre of Dublin City (off campus). We are looking forward to continuing our research work,

attending conferences, publishing papers and networking with our peers both here in and out of

Ireland. We are extremely grateful to SPIE for all their support and funding over the past

years and hope to receive further support in the following year. This funding has been used to

support chapter members travelling abroad to SPIE sponsored events and for social activities

bringing chapter members together in a comfortable environment to allow them to share

thoughts and ideas and have fun.
