The internet-of-things, the internet-of-everything

The Internet of Things (IoT, sometimes Internet of Everything) is the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity to enable it to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices.

Current state of play• Companies believe there is

‘added-value’ when their products can be connected to other products e.g. TV ‘talking to’ fridge, iPhone activated kettle

• Why? Why do companies think that connecting things bring out more economic value?

• Because we are already socially connected to people and things and IoT is hoping to enable better interactions

The future is now..... An IoT home demonstrator

We can now communicate in so many ways

The Internet and WWW gave us connectivity

Page 7: UNIVERSITY AND THE INTERNET-OF-THINGSThe internet-of-things, the internet-of-everything The Internet of Things (IoT, sometimes Internet of Everything) is the network of physical objects

The internet is jumping out of a box• The www and internet sat “in the box” be it a PC, a laptop or a

smartphone • Our lives and our social connectivity is not just in a box, it is with

physical people and objects around us – our home, our bag, our watch, our clothes, our stuff. We (co)create value in the experience and use of stuff. We create meaningful relationships and interactions with others.

• Many people go into the box to connect with one another ie the computer.

• But when mobile devices came along we can connect with one another in the ‘box-on-the go’ (smartphone) which fits our lives better.

• So we are all now in a box for social media, but our lives are not just the part that live in the box, there is a life outside the box

• The internet of things is really about the internet jumping out of the box into every day things relevant to our lives and every day interactions

How do we live on a day to day basis, interacting with people and things?

• We rely on information. To plan, to monitor, to act, to learn. • Some information are on our phones (addresses), in our laptops

(calendar), in our books and papers - data. Some information are invisible (the number of times I wore this jacket). Some information are tacit (tea making process)

• In an era of IoT/IoE, all that information that is tacit or invisible is about to be visible through an explosion of data collected from everywhere, on everything. Every object will yield content and metadata. The way we interact with everything – from clothes to watches to appliances and homes – will become visible through data.

• We will all participate in generating all this data because the services IoT/IoE give us will probably make our lives more efficient, and we can save time etc. etc. much like how the www came into our lives.

• But who controls this data?

• A Personal Data Container • An ontology and database schema that flattens and liberate vertical data (enabling amplification and contextualisation)

• A data bundling tool (contextualisation of data by yourself)

• A platform for exchange and use of personal data (amplification through innovative offerings)

THE UNIVERSITY, THE HAT AND IOT

Page 15: UNIVERSITY AND THE INTERNET-OF-THINGSThe internet-of-things, the internet-of-everything The Internet of Things (IoT, sometimes Internet of Everything) is the network of physical objects

What is the university• It is a place for learning?

• But we now learn everywhere • It is a place where we can

acquire content & knowledge • But we can acquire knowledge from

MOOCs, the internet • It is a networking venue

• But there are plenty of opportunities to network outside of the university

Traditional university value proposition is slowly being eroded by other propositions

Page 16: UNIVERSITY AND THE INTERNET-OF-THINGSThe internet-of-things, the internet-of-everything The Internet of Things (IoT, sometimes Internet of Everything) is the network of physical objects

What is the university (less eroded)• It is a credible signal of

potential (certification) • It is a multi-sensory learning

experience (touch, smell, sight, sound, taste)

• It is the creation of an emotional bonding experience resulting in a mix of a dunkirk spirit and/or stockholm syndrome manifested loosely in the notion of ‘alumni’

Page 17: UNIVERSITY AND THE INTERNET-OF-THINGSThe internet-of-things, the internet-of-everything The Internet of Things (IoT, sometimes Internet of Everything) is the network of physical objects

Students, education, skills and jobs • Students today

• homogeneously opague, blank slate, 'deposit' model of education

• Education today • Contextless, content imparting

• Skills and jobs • Poorer matching between education and jobs • Employers are assessing more than ever before -

alluding to weakness in formal education and certification • A false dichotomy of knowledge for its own sake and

knowledge for jobs

Page 18: UNIVERSITY AND THE INTERNET-OF-THINGSThe internet-of-things, the internet-of-everything The Internet of Things (IoT, sometimes Internet of Everything) is the network of physical objects

Students, education, skills and jobs

• Students tomorrow • Data rich on the HAT, demanding a better fit of

learning experiences and content assimilation based on university data and individual data

• In need of co-created experience of learning rather than being passive

• Education tomorrow • knowledge as liberation rather than content being

'deposited' • Personalised education • Contextual learning through internet connected

objects • Assessment and gamification converge

• Jobs and skills • Outcomes that are both intrinsic (knowledge for its

own sake) and pragmatic (jobs) • Discovery of potential for a diverse job market

where skills and content are less aligned • Matching becomes algorithmic

Page 19: UNIVERSITY AND THE INTERNET-OF-THINGSThe internet-of-things, the internet-of-everything The Internet of Things (IoT, sometimes Internet of Everything) is the network of physical objects

University as a designed knowledge-based experience

• Curated content for education embedded into knowledge based objects • Anything can hold data (wearables etc.) • Everything can be a source of information eg tablet, smartphone, AR glasses,

surfaces, objects • Professors as enablers rather than depositors (analogy: museum tour

guides instead of teacher) • Contextual learning becomes possible with content enabled objects that

become knowledge based internet connected objects. • The university evolves to become

• Knowledge-based experiences through various medium (VR, AR, MOOCs) • Customised medium and content tailored for individuals and yet scalable • Contextual and co-created learning at time, space that is relevant • the designed experience that is fully customisable for every student. Students

evolve with their HATs and come with data from interactions, digital assets (books read, movies watched, interests)

• Fit of medium to student for learning driven by sophisticated algorithms
