The Vice President of University Advancement oversees a team that manages the University’s programs in Development, University Communications and Alumni Relations. The Advancement program at Fresno State is among the four top-tier and mature programs in the CSU, along with San Diego State, Long Beach State and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. We are the second CSU to launch and complete a comprehensive fundraising campaign (Cal Poly in 2004).

Helen BaileyHelen Bailey is an Administrative Support Coordinator and maintains the calendar for the Vice President for Advancement. She also coordinates and completes the VP’s travel and other arrangements, coordinates and schedules meetings with campus community, and organizes and arranges meetings and special events with community leaders, luncheons and receptions for donors. UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT

VICE PRESIDENT

PAULA CASTADIO

KEY OPPORTUNITIES• Leveraging the excitement and enthusiasm of the

first change in presidential leadership in 22 years.

• Maximizing momentum of recent success in the Campaign for Fresno State. In the most difficult of economic times, our first-ever campaign raised $214.2 million, 7 percent beyond the goal.

• Measuring and growing Fresno State’s culture of philanthropy. The principal non-monetary goal of the Campaign for Fresno State was to create a culture of philanthropy on campus. There is ample evidence this occurred, but now it needs to be nurtured.

KEY CHALLENGES• Preparing for a second comprehensive campaign

by investing appropriately in Advancement and implementing the five-year plan called for in the report of the Commission on the Future of Development. Our program is still the lowest funded of the top-tier campuses in the CSU.

• Creating and sustaining a campus-wide model of student and alumni engagement. Our alumni association recently dropped its dues program in order to shift resources and energy to aggressive engagement of students, young alumni and mature alumni.

• Adapting our models of philanthropy, communication and engagement to the changing profile of our alumni population. The student body is now majority minority, and soon our alumni and donor population will reflect this trend.

• Extending the reach of our Advancement efforts beyond the Central Valley to Southern California, the Bay Area and key cities in the U.S. where we have noteworthy concentrations of alumni.

KEY INITIATIVES• Collaborating with Academic Affairs to understand

its vision for the next five to 10 years, and preparing for a campaign to secure private support to fund those initiatives.

• Implementing a Parent and Discovery program. Our parent program has enormous potential for growth, in terms of parental involvement in advocacy and fundraising. We are launching a Discovery program to connect with thousands of non-donor, unassigned alumni throughout California.

• Expanding the pool of identified and qualified prospects for our development efforts. Recently acquired tools and technologies have made it possible to identify thousands of high-wealth alumni who heretofore have not been identified or assigned to development staff.

• Continuing to roll out our new branding and integrated marketing program. This award-winning program has not only provided a unified theme and direction for the campus, but it has been used as an example of how to correctly approach a rebranding effort at many conferences and workshops around the country.

PRIDE POINTSUnit managers will list pride points for their programs in the pages to follow. From the vice president’s perspective, my single greatest pride point is a staff of talented and dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to advance the mission and message of Fresno State.

Denise Nunez

Denise Nunez is an Administrative Assistant responsible for managing the campus operator line, the University Advancement student assistant(s), office inventory and Advancement listserv. She also provides assistance to the Vice President for Advancement. She works in the Henry Madden Library, 4thFloor.

KEY OPPORTUNITIES• Fresno State Magazine: The bi-annual

magazine affords the opportunity for the FSAA to secure advertising revenue to assist with supporting its mission and objectives. One of the most popular sections of the magazine has proven to be the Class Notes section about alumni.

• Chapters and Clubs: Both of these groups provide the FSAA with a vast menu of events that engage and connect with alumni and friends on a face-to-face basis.

• The Bulldog Byte: Each month, the FSAA designs and distributes an award-winning e-newsletter to alumni and friends, as well as to faculty and staff, which includes a Class Notes section about alumni.

KEY CHALLENGES• Sustainability: Securing sustainable funding

is of utmost importance. Maintaining and/or increasing student and alumni services with a growing population of 5,000 graduates each year.

• Data: Funding email appends for an increasing audience base on a regular basis.

• Staying relevant: The changing world has embraced online engagement and social media for virtual connections, and the FSAA needs to continue to embrace this rapidly evolving technology.

• Chapters and Clubs: Both of these groups require a tremendous amount of staff support, from data needs to assistance with publicity, deposits and check requests.

KEY INITIATIVES• Students: The FSAA has developed new

programs to connect with students before they graduate. Included in these programs is a texting acquisition campaign.

• Young alumni: This constituency group desperately wants jobs and welcomes internship and mentoring opportunities. The FSAA is looking to assist in connecting students with alumni who have such opportunities available.

• Victor E. Preferred Partners: The FSAA is establishing a list of preferred vendors that will be showcased and highlighted via FSAA publicity streams.

PRIDE POINTS• Smittcamp Alumni House: The opportunity

to secure off-campus rentals has proven to be an untapped revenue source. Highlighting the venue for weddings is currently being promoted.

• Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala: For more than 80 years, the FSAA has been producing this event, which showcases distinguished alumni of Fresno State. The event attracts nearly 1,000 attendees and is held at the Save Mart Center each fall.

• Student Scholarships: The FSAA maintains a $2.2 million endowment that provides, on an annual basis, more than $125,000 in student scholarships. FSAA scholars are also recognized at the Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala. The FSAA is proud to lead all of the alumni associations in the 23-campus CSU system with student scholarship giving.

• Board of Directors: The FSAA attracts diverse leadership to its board. It is now looking to add a larger student and young alumni representation, as well as leaders from chapters and clubs.

• Awards: In the past year, the FSAA has won awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), Fresno Advertising Federation (ADDY) and the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).

14

KEY CHALLENGES• Improving internal communications: Faculty and staff are not fully engaged in communications issues

within the university community. A work group has surveyed the campus and is developing recommendations.

• A changing media landscape: News outlets have fewer resources, resulting in reduced coverage of university events beyond major announcements and issues.

• Changing information consumption patterns: We are working to make all products mobile accessible.

• No advertising/marketing budget: This prevents us from strengthening our brand and driving messages we want to keep before the public in a sustained, consistent manner.

KEY OPPORTUNITIES• Media interest and community interaction with our new president will allow us to showcase Fresno State’s

16

UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT

17

KEY OPPORTUNITIES• Potential donors: We have a large number of alumni, most of whom have not been solicited. Our recent

analysis identified more than 3,000 high-wealth, high-propensity prospects, most of whom are not currently managed as prospects.

• Growth in research: Cohort hiring of faculty and an increased emphasis on research affords us great openings to discuss philanthropic funding with related corporations, foundations and interested individuals.

• Clear fundraising priorities: We undertook a comprehensive planning process to identify key philanthropic priorities for the next five and 10 years. These priorities will help us pursue prospects for specific initiatives, making our prospecting more efficient.

KEY CHALLENGES• Gap in alumni data and history of contact: Prior to the 1990s, little investment was made in maintaining

good records. Furthermore, we often find that our contact with 60+ year-old graduates is the first they have heard from us. We are rapidly trying to build engagement with limited resources.

• Historic misunderstanding of the need for support: California’s groundbreaking Master Plan of 1960 created an expectation among citizens that our universities would be state-funded. Graduates from the 1960s and thereabout need to be educated on the small percentage of funding that comes from the state, and the role that private philanthropy plays in excellence for Fresno State.

KEY INITIATIVES• Leadership structure: Last year we reorganized our unit development team by identifying top performers,

promoting them to Senior Director of Development and giving them a role in the management of the Development function. This provides a career ladder and offers incentive for performance, while providing a structure for mentorship of junior staff. It furthermore fosters collaboration in development efforts, which is vital for future success.

• Technology infrastructure: We have made investments in technology to make all staff more productive and to better identify potential prospects. This includes a state-of-the-art constituent database, a tool that identifies likely donors and a marketing program for our planned giving unit.

• Goal setting and performance metrics: We put in place a system to set progress goals for each unit, based on the objective need in each case. These goals include not only funds raised, but focus on the development of a sustainable prospect pool for future giving.

PRIDE POINTS• Campaign success: Successful completion of Fresno State’s first-ever comprehensive campaign: more than

$214 million raised; more than 7 percent over goal.

• Campaign Dynamics: The campaign was largely cash-funded rather than long-term pledges, which avoids a long delay in future fundraising.

• Efficient use of resources: Our team returned more than $7 per dollar invested over the course of the campaign, an ROI higher than CSU and national averages.

KEY OPPORTUNITIES• Offering better response to staff and administration

requests for research on prospects.

• Providing more staff training and professional development.

• Inconsistency in gift or pledge documentation — All affiliated and fundraising support organizations need to use standard gift agreement templates and provide complete information for our central database.

PLANNED GIVING

24

DEVELOPMENT - PLANNED GIVING

KEY INITIATIVES• Supporting the development officers and volunteers: Providing confidential technical and strategic

support to the Development Team and all affiliated units within the university is the primary function of this office. Planned Giving receives no direct monetary “credit” for personal production, as the individual units are credited with gift activity.

• Identification of new planned giving prospects: Marketing of planned gifts is difficult at best. Ruffalo Cody’s senior call center specialists provide (through our call center contract) a specialized “planned giving survey” that successfully identifies those who have already included us in their wills and those who are interested in learning how to do so. The next survey is scheduled to begin in September. Prospects derived from this survey will be contacted as time permits over the following weeks and months.

• Heritage Society stewardship: Those alumni and friends who have notified us that they have included Fresno State in their estate plans are automatically members of the Fresno State Heritage Society. One of our primary responsibilities is to nurture each of these relationships (presently 118) until the death of the donor.

The Campaign for Fresno State, the first comprehensive campaign in Fresno State’s 103-year history and among the largest in the California State University system, raised a total of $214,222,190 in support of scholarships, faculty, programs and facilities. The final figure is more than 7 percent above the $200 million goal set in 2005.

During the nearly eight-year campaign, 34,629 donors made a total of 163,212 gifts. Donations ranged in size from $25 gifts from alumni just embarking on their careers, to multimillion dollar gifts that established programs, named colleges, created endowments and built new facilities.

Highlights of the Campaign for Fresno State include:

• $29.5 million from the Jordan family to the Ag One Foundation in support of the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology

• $10 million from William Lyles and his family to the Lyles College of Engineering

• $10 million from the Table Mountain Rancheria to the Henry Madden Library

• $6 million from an anonymous donor to establish the Beck Endowed Scholarship Fund

• $3.5 million from Jan and Bud Richter to create the Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning

39

The fundraising total was announced April 20, 2013, in conjunction with a gala at the Save Mart Center celebrating the career of President Welty, who retired that summer.

When the campaign launched in 2005, community leaders Jan and Bud Richter volunteered to lead the effort as co-chairs. In 2009, alumni Omel Nieves (1983) and Dennis Woods (1969) took over as co-chairs of the drive.

One of the most noticeable examples of philanthropy on campus is the Table Mountain Rancheria Tower at the Henry Madden Library. The Table Mountain gift financed the design, landscaping and furniture enhancements that make the tower an architectural landmark, and also funded the new directional signage system for the campus.

The Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology attracted the most money, raising more than $51 million. The gift from the Jordan family was the largest single cash gift in the history of the CSU and will finance a 30,000-square-foot research center now under construction. Donations to the college also paved the way for the new Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market and Foster Farms Poultry Education and Research Facility. Both buildings opened in March 2013.

Fresno State Athletics generated more than $45.8 million in support during the campaign. The program received nine gifts of more than $250,000, including support from the Chukchansi and Tachi Yokuts tribes. Student-athletes were also enriched by the Meyers family, whose generosity made way for the state-of-the-art Meyers Family Sports Medicine Center that opened in 2013.

William Lyles and his family forever changed engineering education in Central California with $10 million contribution to what is now the Lyles College of Engineering.

A multitude of centers and programs were born out of the campaign, including the Center for Creativity and the Arts, the Gazarian Real Estate Center and the Dandoy Center for Excellence which supports faculty development and leadership in education.

The university’s faculty leadership grew thanks to two Bronco Wine Chairs in the Department of Viticulture and Enology, the Roshan Professorship in the College of Arts and Humanities, the Robert Duncan Nicol Endowed Chair in the Silent Garden for the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Studies and the Pistachio Physiology and Pomology endowed professorship from the California Pistachio Research Board.

Opportunities like the Husband-Boeing Honors Scholars program in Engineering, the Smittcamp Family Honors College, Jensen scholarships, Cook nursing scholarships, Brown liberal arts scholarships, Alice and Paul Vincent scholarships, Verna Mae Brooks scholarships and Harvey scholarships provide life-changing support to students every year.
