Foreword

Finland values education and training. It is a society where culture and sciences are an integral part not only of economy but of everyday life and well-being. Our universities continue to make a crucial contribution to this vision of a good life.

Finland strives to grow as a knowledge society. We have substantially increased investment in research and development in recent years. In 2007, R&D expenditure amounted to 3.5 per cent of the GDP, which put Finland among the top OECD coun-tries. The Government aims to raise the share of R&D expenditure of the GDP to 4 per cent over the next few years.

The Finnish innovation system relies on the uni-versities’ basic research. This remit will be further enhanced in the university reform currently under way. The draft law will further extend the autono-my of universities by giving them an independent legal personality, either as public corporations or as foundations under private law. At the same time, the universities’ management and decision-making system will be reformed.

In the years to come, we will have fewer institutions of higher education with better resources to take charge of their education and research. New institu-tional structures will be in place by 2012.

But don’t wait until 2012 to make your way here. We have a lot to offer already, as you will find on the next pages.

Welcome to Finland! CIMO Communications

Aalto University

The University of Art and Design Helsinki TAIK draws on almost 140 years of history in leading art and design education. We are a unique meet-ing point for design, media and art, excelling in workshops theory and collaboration with diverse partners. Our more than 30 Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programmes range from product and strategic design to fine arts, new media, and film and art education. This makes us one of the largest design universities in the world. An international spirit and the English language are part of our everyday life. Almost 19 per cent of our students come from abroad: TAIK is clearly Finland’s most international university.

Our leading position in art and design appeals to international researchers and doctoral students. Of our 220 PhD candidates, 18 per cent represent a nationality other than Finnish. Since 1991, over 70 students have gained their doctorates in Arts (DA).

Our research is highly versatile, relating to fields of design, art education, visual culture and audiovisual representation, and digital media.

We make a tangible contribution to many interna-tional networks such as CUMULUS, the Interna-tional Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media. Co-ordinated by TAIK, this is the only global discussion forum for more than 140 universities of art, art education, design and new media. While it is an important player in modern art and design education, CUMULUS also provides an ideal environment for developing mod-els, methods and standards for doctoral education, research and further development.

We are also involved in the Nordplus network CIRRUS within the Nordic region and numerous bilateral collaboration agreements with universities all over the world. With 20 member universities, CIRRUS promotes student and teacher exchange as well as other forms of research and project collabo-ration.

International students have good reasons for choosing to study at Helsinki’s University of Art and Design: some seek an unforgettable cultural experience, and others are drawn by Finnish design and designers. Students are also attracted by the prospect of working in ambitious projects under tu-telage of top-notch professionals from leading Finn-ish and international companies. The work at TAIK is based on close collaboration with the world’s best universities, companies and cultural institutions.

A small but lively community, the Academy provides ample opportunities for national and international networking for the artists of tomorrow.

Sibelius Academy

Sibelius Academy, a unique music university

We draw our strength from artistic work and in-novative research. As an internationally acclaimed university, Sibelius Academy fosters and renews the musical tradition in Finland. Our excellent results have made us one of the cornerstones of Finnish music culture.

The Sibelius Academy offers education from Bach-elor’s to Doctoral degrees in almost every field of music. This includes performing studies in classi-cal instruments, conducting, folk music, jazz and church music to teacher training, arts management and music technology. Artistic productions and practice-based research create an educational cli-mate of free entrepreneurship, critical thinking and social responsibility. Every year, we arrange more than 600 concerts.

Based on traditional music conservatory ideals, music education today is highly international. Next to the Erasmus programmes, which mostly focus on European exchange and mobility, we have devel-oped Nordic joint programmes in folk music and jazz. Similar programmes in early music and world music are under construction.

The Sibelius Academy offers ten degree pro-grammes. Of these, Arts Management is conducted entirely in English. It is possible to study in English in all our degree programmes with the exception of Music Education and Church Music.

In the last few years, we have made a concerted and successful effort to increase our links to the USA and the Far East. We now have partner agreements with some 100 universities in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and North America.

The University of Helsinki has strong international connections, with more than 100 co-operation agreements with universities on different con-tinents. Our researchers are in great demand as experts in international scientific communities, meetings and publications. In addition to bilateral agreements, we make an active contribution to many exchange programmes such as Erasmus. Every year, we send and receive close to 1 000 students on exchanges.

Our experts and alumni are the best and most eloquent testimony to the University’s prowess. The University of Helsinki is the alma mater of, for example, seven of Finland’s eleven presidents; Jorma Ollila, former CEO of Nokia; and Linus Torvalds, the brain behind the Linux operating system.

Opening up inter-national horizons

In 2010 the Turku School of Economics will merge with the neighbouring University of Turku. This will strengthen our national and international position as a significant multidisciplinary research university with outstand-ing curricula, extensive business competence and effective capitalisation of innovations.

In shaping the future, the Turku School of Economics produces and applies business knowledge and fosters entrepreneurship. We conduct both basic and applied research, and offer graduate, postgraduate and continuing educa-tion. Expert consulting services are a key part of our remit.

Our core area of expertise is business studies, which comprises accounting and finance, management and organisation, marketing, international business, IT management, and economics. Other areas in which the School has specialist resources are Euro-pean studies, small and medium-sized enterprises and entrepreneurship, international business and logistics, and futures studies.

A high standard of research is maintained not only by the departments within the school but also by the special units such as the Finland Futures Research Centre, Business and Innovation Develop-ment BID, the Centre for Research and Education CRE, and our Pori Unit.

One of our top priorities is collaboration with local and international businesses and universities. In-ternationalisation is an increasingly important part

of our work; we can offer student and researcher exchange agreements with over 80 universities in 30 countries worldwide. In addition, a wide range of our modules are taught in English.

Students are offered a modern and demanding environment to grow and develop. This is a solid scientific community in which they can and should think in new ways.

The University of Vaasa is a multidisciplinary uni-versity offering degrees at all academic levels from Bachelor’s to Doctor’s. Its 5 000 students enjoy one of Finland’s newest maritime campus areas. The University values internationalisation in both its degrees and research.

The University is geared around four faculties. We focus our teaching and research on business studies, administration, technology, and languages and cul-ture. Flexible opportunities of study are among the prime strengths of our academic community.

Finland’s geographical position and Nordic in-novation have introduced unique nuances into our academic education and research. In addition to Nordic economics, we specialise in the Eastern Eu-ropean economic region. Another field of expertise is the comparative study of the structures of the Nordic welfare state from an international angle. We can also offer our students a natural bilingual environment for the study of the Swedish and Finn-ish languages and cultures.

The University of Vaasa has busy student exchange, with partnerships in more than 35 countries worldwide. We also offer five Master’s programmes for international students and several non-degree programmes for exchange students.

International students and teachers bring a multi-cultural spirit to the campus. About 30 per cent of Vaasa’s annual student intake complete part of their studies abroad. About one in ten of all our students come from abroad.
