Our History

The more you know about history, the

better you will come to understand our

mission and place in the large field of

academic life.

The University was founded in Bucharest

in 1948, under the name of Petroleum

and Gas Institute and it had at the time

two faculties: The Faculty of Drilling-

Production (later on named The Faculty

of Reservoir Engineering and at present

the Faculty of Petroleum and Gas

Engineer ing) and the Faculty of

Petroleum Refining (later on named the

Faculty of Petroleum and Gas Processing

and Chemistry and at present the Faculty

of Petroleum Refining and Petro-

chemistry).

In 1950, the following faculties were

added: the Faculty of Oil Machines and

Equipment (later on named the Faculty of

Technological Equipment, and at

present, to better express the field of

activity and its specialties, the Faculty of

Mechanical and Electrical Engineering),

t h e Fa c u l t y o f E c o n o m i c s a n d

Organization of Petroleum Industry (it

functioned until 1968) and the Faculty of

Petroleum and Gas Deposits Geology

(later on named the Faculty of Geology

due to extending the field of activity after

the transfer, in 1957, of the Faculty of

Geology from the Geology and Mining

Institute of Bucharest).

In 1957, because of these structural

changes, Petroleum and Gas Institute

changed its name into Petroleum, Gas

and Geology Institute of Bucharest.

Between 1967 and 1975, Petroleum, Gas

and Geology Institute of Bucharest was

transferred to Ploieşti under the name of

Petroleum and Gas Institute, except for

the Faculty of Geology, which became

part of the University of Bucharest in

1975.

In 1968 short-term (3 years) university

training programmes were set up, and in

1972, evening courses education

programmes started. Between 1978 and

1989 the academic s t ructure of

Petroleum and Gas Institute practically

remained unchanged.

In 1992 The Faculty of Letters and

Sciences was set up and Petroleum and

Gas Institute changed its name into

University of Ploieşti.

Since the former institute used to be

known worldwide for its tradition, the

board of the university decided to

rename University of Ploieşti into

Petroleum - Gas University of Ploieşti, a

name that shows both that new faculties

were set up, thus creating a ‘university’,

but also that the old faculties set up in the

late forties were still there.

Since 1997 the technical faculties have

been included in the FEANI index.

Graduates can be registered in the FEANI

register getting the title of European

Master of Science EURING, according to

the conditions imposed by FEANI.

In 1998 A Teachers’ Training Department

was set up to deliver courses for teachers’

basic and continuous education and in

2001 Open and Distance Learning

courses started. In 2002, since the Faculty

of Letters and Sciences had a significant

number of students, splitting it into two

faculties was needed. Thus, in 2002

Petroleum - Gas University of Ploieşti

included among its faculties the Faculty

of Economic Sciences, which took over all

the economic specializations formerly

subsumed to the Faculty of Letters and

Sciences.

In the academic year 2005-2006

Petroleum - Gas University of Ploieşti

restructured the curricula for all its

faculties and specializations to meet the

European requirements stipulated for

academic institutions by the Bologna

Project.

In 2000, the postgraduate College of

Economic Arbitration Management was

founded.

In the field of postgraduate and doctoral

studies, Petroleum - Gas University of

Ploieşti has had a rich tradition ever since

1950 and has obtained outstanding

results. Between 1966 and 1982 the

university organized postgraduate

UNESCO courses in Petroleum Geology

(1966-1967; teaching language: French)

and in Petrochemistry (1968-1982;

teaching language: English).

Ever since 1951, Petroleum - Gas

University of Ploieşti has organized

doctoral studies and it also obtained the

right to grant PhD degrees and the title

of Doctor Honoris Causa. At present,

doctoral studies are organized in the

field of Engineering.

In the academic year 2015-2016, the

university has 7537 students and 281

academic staff.

At present, our University organizes:

! Bachelor Degree Programmes;

! Master Degree Programmes;

! Doctoral Degree Programmes;

! Further Education Programmes;

! Part-Time Learning Programmes;

! Open and Distance-Learning Pro-

grammes.

Dear graduates of Petroleum and

Gas University of Ploiesti,

Our university, which proudly

bears the name of Petroleum and Gas,

counts its merits through its students

and graduates.

In its 68 years of existence, the

university has trained tens of thousands

of students from Romania or over 70

countries in its amphitheatres, lecture

rooms and research laboratories. All

these graduates were successful in their

careers, irrespective of the country they

had come from or worked in. Many of

our graduates had or sti l l have

important positions in their companies

or even in the governmental admin-

istration.

No matter what specialisation of

the three technical faculties they

graduated from, drilling – production,

oil and gas transportation; electro-

mechanics, electronics, automatics; oil

and gas processing, all our graduates

are part of “the great family of

petroleum engineers”, and that is

because their diploma was issued by

Petroleum and Gas University of

Ploiesti.

All graduates who have ever

worked or are still working abroad are

real ambassadors of our university and

of our country, Romania.

They have managed to trans-

form the name of our university into

an international brand.

Dear graduates, the university

is proud of you all and we would be

extremely honoured if you are also

proud of the university you have

graduated from. We sincerely hope

that you will never forget that you are

“petroleum engineers” who gradua-

ted from our university.

We invite you to join us in our

endeavour to promote our university

and to contribute to strengthening

Degrees from Africa have studied

and graduated from different

specializations of Petroleum and Gas

University of Ploiesti, or benefited

from other training here.

Their names and the faculties/

specializations they graduated from

are presented in this booklet. They

have brought great honour to their

country and their families.
