no acumular trabajo innecesariamente. La presentación es importante y debe estar
preparado y organizado profesionalmente. Debe incluir cada una de las secciones
debidamente organizadas y rotuladas.

1. Course Portfolio: Each student will prepare a portfolio to reflect on the course
topics and its progress. It is important that the student works on the portfolio starting
on the first week of class. The portfolio must be up-to-date at all times and be
available during each workshop in case the facilitator wants to review it. The
portfolio will be evaluated using the criteria presented in Appendix H. It should
include the following sections:
a. Weekly Assignments/Class Work: To design effective training and
development methods the student should be exposed to the theoretical
foundation of adult learning and be able to apply this knowledge to the
development of organizational instructional programs. The ability to
communicate complex information in writing is an essential part of this
process. As a result, this course relies on assigned written research
assignments as well as collaborative activities that must be completed in the
classroom. All assignments and class work will be evaluated based on its
![Page 13: Universidad Ana G. technical writing quality (grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure,
etc.) as well as its content. All assignments must be submitted at the
beginning of the workshop for which they had been assigned, whereas the
classroom work activities will be turned in at the end of the workshop.. The
facilitator will return the assignments / class work at the next workshop with
noted recommendations and comments. The student may revise, correct and
improve them based on the facilitator’s comments and what has been learned
in class. It is recommended to use Arial 12 font with a one space and onehalf
space between lines. Assignments should be written and presented in the
language of the workshop.
b. Reflective Diary (Appendix B): Each student will summarize the concepts
learned throughout the Workshop by completing the worksheet in Appendix
B. It must be redacted in the language of the workshop.
c. Essay in English (Instructional Design): Each student will write an essay
in English (minimum of 1,000 words) reflecting on the impact that “open
systems theory,” the concepts of “learning organization,” and “organizational
change” have on the development of effective instructional programs.
d. Essay in Spanish (E-Learning): Each student will write an essay in Spanish
(minimum of 1,000 words) comparing the effectiveness of the traditional
training model (classroom setting) with the dynamic model of distance
learning (e- learning).
The course portfolio must be submitted at the beginning of workshop five. The
student must be preparing it throughout the course to avoid last-minute, poor quality
work. The appearance of the portfolio is important and it must be prepared and
organized in a professional manner. Each section must be clearly organized and
labeled. It is recommended to use Arial 12 font type/size.
2. Training Plan (in class): The facilitator will divide the class into groups and assign
a training topic to each. For their assigned training topic, each group will formulate a
training design, select the appropriate facilitation technique(s) including sample
instructional materials, and facilitate a short training session.
![Page 14: Universidad Ana G. 3. Attendance and Participation: Attendance is mandatory and being on time reflects
professional courtesy and ethic. The facilitator will maintain an attendance/tardiness
record of each student. The student is expected to come prepared to class
(assigned readings, assignments, case studies, etc.) and to actively participate in
class discussions. The facilitator will evaluate attendance and class participation at
the end of the course utilizing the criteria presented in Appendix J. He/she will
consider the degree of student participation, class preparation and contribution to
class discussions. Class participation throughout the course should be in both
English and Spanish
4. Final Project: The objective of the final project is to provide students with the
opportunity to interact among themselves and apply the concepts learned
throughout the course in the design and facilitation of a training program. Each
group will choose a training topic for the list presented in Appendix F. Each group
will be composed on no more than four (4) students. The project consists of two
parts: (1) a written report in English where students will completely document the
design of the training program, and (2) an oral presentation of 30 minutes in Spanish
where all group members will participate in the facilitation of the training session
documented in the written report. All group members must equally
contribute/participate in developing the written report and facilitating the training
session. The written portion of the project will be evaluating following the criteria
presented in Appendix C. The oral presentation will be evaluated following the
criteria presented in Appendix K.
Description of course policies
1. Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory. If the Facilitator excuses an
absence, the student must make up for all presentations, papers, or other
assignments due on the date of the absence. The Facilitator will have the final
decision on approval of absences. He/she reserves the right to accept or reject
assignments past due, and to adjust the student’s grade accordingly.

2. Oral presentations and special activities cannot be remade. If the student
provides a valid and verifiable excuse (Ex. medical or from a court), he/she will
be summoned for a written test on the activity in which he/she did not attend.
3. The course is conducted in an accelerated format and requires that students
prepare in advance for each workshop according to the course module. Each
workshop requires at least ten hours of preparation.
4. It is expected that all written work will be solely that of the student and should not
be plagiarized. That is, the student must be the author of all work submitted. All
quoted or paraphrased material must be properly cited, with credit given to its
author or publisher. It should be noted that plagiarized writings are easily
detectable and students should not risk losing credit for material that is clearly not
their own.
5. If the Facilitator makes changes to the study guide, such changes should be
discussed with the students during the first workshop. Changes agreed upon
should be indicated in writing and given to the students and to the program
administrator.
6. The facilitator will establish the means and way of contact with the students.
7. The use of cellular phones is prohibited during sessions.
8. Children or family members are not allowed to the classrooms.
9. Workshops will be facilitated in English and Spanish in alternate days, in keeping
with the format established in this module. Students may interact and ask
questions in the language of their preference, but generally it is expected that
they use the language of the specific assignment. Each course will have an
equal balance of Spanish and English usage.
10. All students are subject to the policies regarding behavior in the university
community established by the institution and in this course.
11. In group works, except under exceptional circumstances, it will be considered
that all the members of the group perform work and thus they will be evaluated
equally.

Teaching Philosophy and Methodology
This course is grounded in the learning theory of Constructivism. Constructivism is a
philosophy of learning founded on the premise that, by reflecting on our experiences, we
construct our own understanding of the world in which we live.
Each of us generates our own “rules” and “mental models,” which we use to make
sense of our experiences. Learning, therefore, is simply the process of adjusting our
mental models to accommodate new experiences. As teachers, our focus is on making
connections between facts and fostering new understanding in students. We will also
attempt to tailor our teaching strategies to student responses and encourage students to
analyze, interpret and predict information.
There are several guiding principles of constructivism:
1. Learning is a search for meaning. Therefore, learning must start with the issues
around which students are actively trying to construct meaning.
![Page 17: Universidad Ana G. Méndez School of Professional Studies 720 o…

Prep. 02-22-05. Esther A. Rubio Negrón, MA Rev. 01-04-06. Orlando Portalatín
2. Meaning requires understanding wholes as well as parts. And parts must be
understood in the context of wholes. Therefore, the learning process focuses on
primary concepts, not isolated facts.
3. In order to teach well, we must understand the mental models that students use
to perceive the world and the assumptions they make to support those models.
4. The purpose of learning is for an individual to construct his or her own meaning,
not just memorize the "right" answers and regurgitate someone else's meaning.
Since education is inherently interdisciplinary, the only valuable way to measure
learning is to make the assessment part of the learning process, ensuring it
provides students with information on the quality of their learning.
5. Evaluation should serve as a self-analysis tool.
6. Provide tools and environments that help learners interpret the multiple
perspectives of the world.
7. Learning should be internally controlled and mediated by the learner.
Workshop One Specific Objectives
At the end of this workshop, the student will:
1. Explain the concept of a learning organization and its importance to
organizational development.
2. Reflect on open systems theory and how it applies to the development of
organizational development and training strategies.
3. Understand change and its impact on individuals, groups, and organizations.
4. Describe the importance and the need of training programs in competitive
organizations.
5. Understand the strategic competencies required for the training and instructional
design methodology.
6. Define and explain relevant management concepts such as competitiveness,
training, stakeholders, needs analyses, and the relationship among these
concepts.

![Page 32: Universidad Ana G. Méndez School of Professional Studies 720 o…

Puntuación final:____________________puntos obtenidos de 50 Anejo C/Appendix C The Essay
An organized essay consists of an introductory paragraph, three or more paragraphs
supporting the essay’s main idea, and a concluding paragraph. All paragraphs contain
a thesis statement typically located at the beginning of each paragraph. They also
contain secondary statements or sentences that support, explain and expand the thesis
statement.
Introductory Paragraph
The introductory paragraph should first contain suggestive sentences that are related to
the main idea and trigger the reader’s interested in the essay. Then, the main idea
should be explicitly presented through a declarative sentence or thesis statement. The
thesis statement defines the ‘what’ and ‘who’ of the essay’s issue or main idea. It also
provides the framework to the rest of the arguments presented int the essay. The
introductory paragraph contains the thesis to be demonstrated, may include a personal
opinion or the opinions of others as related to the main topic of the essay.
Supporting Paragraphs
The body of the essay is where the thesis presented in the introductory paragraph is
developed and defended. It should contain no less than three supporting arguments
that refute, prove, and evidence what was formulated in the introduction. For each

supporting paragraph, there should be a central idea. For each central idea, there
should be various secondary ideas that support and sustain the central idea.
Conclusion
The concluding paragraph of an essay should present the following:
- A summary of the main points presented in the essay
- A reaffirmation of the thesis defended by the author
- The possible solutions to the problem or issue presented
- The new positions, proposals or findings that support the author’s thesis
and refute opposing views.

A: 100 – 90
B: 89 – 80
C: 79 – 70
D: 69 – 60
F: 59 – 0

This technique allows for an informal interaction of ideas encouraging active
participation and communication among group members. It also encourages group
members to quickly reach an agreement.
Recommended Steps:
• Explain the process
• Determine the composition of each team
• Present the topic or issue to discuss
• Instruct them that they only have six minutes to write the general position or
conclusion. They must also provide an example.
• Explain that they will only have six minutes to present to the rest of the group.
Note: This exercise can be done with less than six people in a team. The facilitator has
the discretion of adjusting the time in accordance to the number of members.
