This document helps you to learn about Universal Tracer which addresses the basic steps to perform communication exchanges.

AudienceThis document is intended for:

■ Technical marketing people. These people frequently need to personalize the content of a SIM card’s file system, and to rapidly prototype SIM Toolkit applications.

■ People involved in mobile testing.

PrerequisitesThis document assumes that you are familiar with the operating systems and with Java Card, Open Platform (OP), 3GPP Specifications and Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM) specifications.

Setting Up the Universal Tracer

Hardware RequirementsThe following hardware is required to use the Universal Tracer:

■ A workstation with:

– Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, 2.0 GHz or faster.

– A minimum of 1 GB of RAM (2 GB is recommended).

– 400 MB of available disk space for installation.

– USB compliant port (USB 2.0 or higher is recommended).

■ A data source (such as the mobile-SIM connector (MSC), PC/SC-compatible smartcard reader or card simulator).

■ A set of four probes for MSC

■ A (U)SIM card adaptor1

■ A Smart adaptor1 The usage of this hardware is only required when tracing is done using other smartcard reader.

Software RequirementsUniversal Tracer runs under:

■ Microsoft® Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (32-bit).

■ Microsoft® Windows Vista (32-bit).

Setting Up the Universal TracerDepending on the data sources you are working with, multiple tracing sessions are allowed to conduct different traces simultaneously. There are different ways to conduct a trace and these are listed in the following.

You must install the driver for MSC device before the MSC device can communicate with the Universal Tracer.

To install a MSC device driver:1 Plug in the MSC device to the USB port of your PC or laptop.

2 Your MSC device will be detected automatically and you will be led to the Found New Hardware Wizard window.

3 Select No, not this time and click Next to proceed to the next step.

4 Choose Install the software automatically (Recommended) and click Next to continue.

5 Click Continue Anyway to verify the compatibility of MSC driver on Windows XP.

Stopping the installation exits the wizard and the driver will not installed.

6 Click Finish to close the wizard. Once the driver is installed successfully, a small pop-up window is displayed in the taskbar to notify you that the hardware is installed and ready for use.

4 Universal Tracer Getting Started

To trace between a (U)SIM card and a ME:1 Plug in the MSC device to the USB port of your PC or laptop.

2 Insert a (U)SIM card to the (U)SIM card adaptor.

3 Use the MSC probe to connect the ME and MSC device.

4 Insert the (U)SIM card adaptor with the (U)SIM to the MSC device.

5 Run the Universal Tracer application and select the MSC device from the drop-down list on . The Universal Tracer will then trace the communication between the (U)SIM card and ME.

To trace between a (U)SIM card and a PC/SC smartcard reader: 1 Run the Universal Tracer application.

2 Plug in the Gemalto USB card reader to your PC or laptop.

3 Insert a (U)SIM card to the card reader.

4 Select the PC/SC smartcard reader from the drop-down list on . The Universal Tracer will then trace the communication that occurs in the PC/SC smartcard reader.

To trace between other smartcard reader and a (U)SIM card:1 Plug in the card reader to your PC or laptop.

2 Use the MSC probe to connect the Smart adaptor and MSC device.

3 Insert a (U)SIM card to the MSC device.

4 Insert the Smart adaptor to the card reader.

5 Run the Universal Tracer application and select the MSC device from the drop-down list on . The Universal Tracer will then trace the communication that occurs in the card reader.

To trace communication in card simulator: 1 Run the card simulator.

2 Run the Universal Tracer application and select the corresponding card simulator from the drop-down list on . The Universal Tracer will then trace the communication that occurs in the card simulator.

Note: The list of card simulators supported is limited to the card simulators provided in the Gemalto Developer Suite version 3.4 or Gemalto Simulation Suite 2.4 onwards.

Product LicensingA 20-day tryout license is available and this trial period starts from the day you installed the Universal Tracer.

To continue using Universal Tracer after the trial license expires, you need to initiate a product activation sequence to obtain a full license.

Product activation works by verifying that a Universal Tracer product profile file, which is an export file generated, has not been registered on more personal computers than intended by its license.

To initiate the product activation, you need to provide the product profile file to enable you to request the license file from the License Key Manager via an email as follows:

1 Select Gemalto > Licensing from the menu bar.

2 To generate a product profile file, select Export Profile to input your personal information in the required fields. You may also provide the product profile file that is generated previously. Alternatively, if a product profile file has been generated previously, you can skip step 3 and send a request to the License Key Manager at tools_licensing@gemalto.com.

Note: After the expiration of the trial license, new traces cannot be created. However, you can still view and interpret existing traces.

3 Click Save & Send to request a license file from the License Key Manager via an email.

4 Once the license file is received in the form of an email, select Import License from Gemalto > Licensing. With this, the product activation of Universal Tracer is completed.

To renew your license, you may send a request to the License Key Manager at tools_licensing@gemalto.com or check with your Gemalto Technical Consultant for more information.

Product RegistrationRegister your Universal Tracer online to receive notifications on product updates and access to download updates and upgrades.

To register your product:1 Select Gemalto > Register Product from the menu bar.

2 Enter the information required and submit by clicking Register Now.

3 A confirmation window is displayed. Click OK in the confirmation window to complete the product registration or Cancel to save the information you have just entered and register it later.

Working with the Universal Tracer

The Universal Tracer enables you to trace APDU communication exchanges between a PC application and a PC/SC-compatible smartcard reader or card simulator to debug or check compliance with established standards. When used with a special USB mobile-SIM connector (a MSC device), the Universal Tracer can also track the APDU exchanges between a mobile equipment (ME) and a (U)SIM card. These communication exchanges are subsequently logged and interpreted.

The Universal Tracer user interface consists of three main parts:

■ Trace Area

■ Action Bar

■ Start/Stop

The Trace Area displays the traced data and the Action Bar contains the buttons that allows you to perform different operations on the trace. Use the Start button on the toolbar to initiate a trace session and Stop to end the trace session.

Working with the Universal Tracer 11

Using the TracerBefore you can begin working with the Universal Tracer, you must define the data source you want to work with. The media can be connected to your PC via the following sources:

■ A mobile-SIM connector (MSC)

■ A PC/SC-compatible smartcard reader

■ A card simulator

In the Universal Tracer, the format of the respective data source is displayed in the following order:

To see the data sources that are connected to your PC, click the drop-down list on .

To start a trace session:1 Connect the data source.

2 Run a PC application to be used for tracking the APDU exchanges between the media and the PC application.

3 Click to start the trace session. Perform the sequence of commands to be traced in the PC application. The trace information and any returned APDU response are displayed in the Trace area.

4 To interpret the trace information, click and the interpreted trace file shows the APDU commands that are sent to the card and the responses returned by the card.

5 At any time, you can:

– Click on the toolbar to temporarily suspend the trace session. The trace session is suspended until is pressed again to restart tracing.

– Either click on the toolbar to stop tracing and close the trace session.

6 Enter the name of the new trace and click to save the trace information.

7 To close the trace session at any time, click .

Alternatively, you can load a trace file (in .xti or .per format) to track a pre-recorded session by clicking .

There are options to copy, extract selected items, clear a trace and search a trace via right-clicking any row in the trace session or in the interpreted mode. For more information about the use of these options, click the Help button in the respective contextual help window.

To switch between the different tracer windows, click the drop-down list on the right-hand side of the Tracer window and click the preferred window as shown in the following.
