Where Does the Term “IFC” Come From?
IFC stands for “Integrated Furnace Control”. Originally, furnaces had controls that operated the ignition and fuel burning separately from the Blower Motor. IFCs brought these functions together, so that one control monitors all functions.
IFC’s can:• Monitor flue blockage for safety• Operate an inducer motor• Provide gas ignition and monitor to ensure burning• Monitor furnace from overheating for safety• Turn the fan blower on and off at the correct time• Oversee all thermostat requests• Provide status codes to verify current state• Provide fault codes to help troubleshoot
50M56U-843
Universal Single Stage IFCs
TECH TIP: Universal IFC’s can replace more than 1 OEM control by being built to accommodate design differences, sometimes using adapter harnesses.
20
IFC History
1935 1968 1988 1990
Era when non-integrated controls operated furnaces
• An electric fan to distribute the heated air through ductwork of a coal fired furnace within the home is patented.
• Mechanical temperature switches are used to control when the blower turns on/off.
• An Intermittent Spark ignition system is introduced to replace Standing Pilot Systems.
• A Furnace Blower Control that uses a microprocessor to time the fan blower on & off instead of a temperature sensing control is patented.
• A fully Integrated Furnace Control that controls the gas valve, gas ignition, flame sensing, blower fan operation, induced draft sensing, & limit functions is patented.
• IFC’s can turn on blowers and turn off gas in an overheating event.

21
Ignition Types Gas Valve Stages Blower Motor Types
IFC Options / Differences
• Hot Surface Ignition is operated with either Silicon Carbide of Silicon Nitride.
• Direct Spark Ignition uses a spark probe to directly ignite burner gas.
• Proven or Intermittent Pilot first checks for pilot ignition prior to opening up the main gas valve.
The most popular Furnaces manufactured are single stage but are also made with 2 heating stages or more. The most common are:
• Single Stage use a single stage gas valve.
• Two-Stage use a 2-stage gas valve. Usually staged open at 40% and then 100%
• PSC or Permanent Split Capacitor motors were regulated out of new residential furnaces made after July 3rd, 2019
• ECMx or X-13 motors use a controller to maintain constant torque on the blower shaft.
• ECMv or Constant Speed motors use a controller to maintain a constant airflow speed.

22
Universal Control Coverage
One Control vs Multiple OEMSMultiple controls can be replaced with one Universal Control using different methods:
• Additional circuits within the control• Duplicate terminals for different
OEM’s• Adapter harnesses to connect to
different sku’s• Dipswitches located on the control• Jumper pins located on the control
White-Rodgers considers every aspect to make Universal Controls as versatile and broad in coverage as possible.
Exclusive patented dual plug-in ports
Pins for OEM circuit
Flame Sense in 11-Pin inline port and on individual spade
Wiring adapter harnesses
Dipswitches for Single or 2-Stage applications

TECH TIP: White-Rodgers simplifies methods to keep the installation as clear and easy as possible.
23
80v vs 120v Hot Surface Ignitors
From 1997 to 2006, a few furnace manufacturers used 80v AC to power Hot Surface Ignitors. However, there are no markings on these HSI’s to indicate voltage. To verify the correct existing HSI voltage, check the installed control board model.
If an HSI control board is 80v AC, it can be upgraded to 120v AC, but the ignitor and the control board should be replaced simultaneously. Failure to replace an 80v ignitor when upgrading the control to 120v will result in ignitor overvoltage and failure.
Hot Surface Ignitors generally have no special composition to make them furnace specific.
Replacement requirements:• Voltage matches the control board
HSI output• Ignitor location matches
OEM location
Even Silicon Carbide hot surface ignitors can be upgraded to Silicon Nitride with a White-Rodgers Universal HotRod Ignitor.
Universal Single Stage IFCs
TECH TIP: White-Rodgers offers a Universal Single Stage 80v HSI control to be able to change the control while leaving the ignitor.

Understanding Control Plug-In Variations
Universal Single Stage IFCs
Early IFC’s had fewer pins in connectors and more individual wires going directly to the board. More recent models utilize 11 or 12 pin connectors.

Testing Flame Current with 50X or 50M
Understanding Test Pins2 pins extend from the control board to the surface of the black cover.
To Test: • The furnace must have a call
for heat and the burners producing flame.
• Set a multimeter to vDC and place a meter probe on each pin.
• Convert vDc to MicroAmpsusing a 1:1 ratio.
• A good flame sense reading will be between 1.0 – 5.0 μA.

Twinning with 50X or 50M
• Two 50X57-843 OR two 50M56U-843 controls can be connected to operate simultaneously.
• Twinning requires a connection of the twin terminal on both boards using an 18ga wire.
• The board with the thermostat connection will fully function including the LED indicator and dipswitch settings. The twinned board will operate simultaneously.
• The twinned unit can be wired for heat to come on by utilizing the “W” terminal, either with the 1st unit or as a 2nd stage.

Roll-Out Jumper on 50X and 50M
Jumper PurposeAll Trane & American Standard units as well as York P3UR/PCLU units are manufactured without a separate rollout circuit.
To accommodate these units a jumper is required to complete the circuit that would otherwise be open in the 12 pin Molex connector.
Without the jumper, the control will flash 5 red flashes indicating the rollout circuit is open.

Troubleshooting with 50X and 50M
Troubleshooting is made easy with fault code labels right on the cover, and complementary Tri-Color LEDs.
A Fault button allows for:
• Recall of the last 5 faults• Fault code erasure• Place the control into
the Self Test mode
