Credit Union Awards – 2011

• The National Credit Union Awards for Excellence from Unity Trust Bank is a set of awards to recognise outstanding contributions to credit unions.

• Now in their second year, the awards are designed to champion and pay tribute to the extraordinary work of the countless unsung individuals who give their time and expertise to the credit union movement.

Credit Union Awards – 2011

• There are 11 categories and a special award which is presented to the person or credit union who has done the most to promote the concept of credit unions.

• Winners of the awards are selected by an eminent panel of judges and the winners of the inaugural awards were announced at a ceremony hosted in the House of Lords.

• The 2011 winners will be announced at a ceremony at the House of Lords on 18 April 2012.

How to enter•Entry is open to ANY credit union in the UK and NI, whether or not it banks with Unity Trust•Entries can be made in as many categories as appropriate and specific projects can be entered in more than one category.•Entries must be submitted using the Credit Union Awards application form and in accordance with the guidelines detailed on our website.

Tips on entry•The judges will be looking for examples of outstanding projects, performance and results, backed up by hard evidence of success, and how the credit union has benefited both the company and the not-for-profit organisation that they were working with.

•Successful entries will be specific and economical with words.

Eligibility•Entry to the awards must be based on work substantially completed during the period 1 October 2010 to 30 November 2011. In exceptional circumstances, work started before this date, but which has been significantly developed during the period above will be considered.

Credit Union Development Fund

• Established over 13 years ago

• Set up to aid the growth of the credit union movement

• Assists both new and existing credit unions with their marketing and publicity costs

What is the Credit Union Development Fund?

• Credit Unions encouraged to put surplus funds into a deposit account with Unity

• The account provides instant access to the funds and pays interest twice yearly

• Unity pay an amount currently equivalent of 0.125% of the combined balances into the grant fund

How does it work?

• Credit Unions can apply for grants of up to £1,000

• An independent panel consider all applications and if successful award grants

• The Credit Union must hold a bank account with Unity to be eligible to apply for a grant

• Over £100,000 in grants awarded to date, including £22,000 this year

• Currently reviewing arrangements, but likely to be:

• Grants only available to Credit Unions with < 4,000 members

• Grants available for amounts between £3,000 - £5,000

• A smaller independent panel chaired by Steve Johnson of Advice UK will consider all grant applications
