We Hold Two Sunday Services at Unity of the Valley

Our two services on Sunday provide powerful experiences, yet with contrasting styles. One is contemplative, and the other is more celebratory.

Our 9 am service, Anam Cara, is led by Revs. Sherry Lady and Inge Tarantola. Sharing that which is happy and good, we come together to listen

openly to words of inspiration, uplifting music, and meditative silence. We leave in recognition of each other as soul friends, walking a path that is sacred and love-filled. This we share with others in our lives.

Our 11 am service is an energizing celebration of our community, with uplifting music supported by the Unity music team and band.

Rev. Sherry, Rev. Inge, Jon West, and Special Guests provide powerful messages and heartfelt meditations.

Our Youth and Family Ministry provides a spiritual education program for children and young people during this hour.

Message from Our Co-Associate Minister Rev. Sherry Lady

Josephine Stout, of Chicago, always thought she was a U.S. citizen. Then, elderly and raising seven grandchildren after losing her three adult children in tragic circumstances, she was suddenly considered an illegal immigrant. It is a

story worth knowing. You can find it online by typing in her name, which will take you to the Chicago Tribune article and to the photo site of her grandchildren.

So, what does that have to do with the month of March? Josephine was born in Ireland, and each year in March I like to learn more about Irish contributions to the world, whatever the size of those contributions may be. I am more inspired by real-life stories than by any other kind, so I do a search each month to find my “person of the month.” Josephine wins hands-down for me this time.

Why? Because, in spite of its shining moments and its gifts, life can be quite a challenge. When I read about someone who was able to overcome incredible circumstances and never lose faith or the determination to succeed, I see what is possible for me also, and I am grateful for that inspiration. Josephine is 90 now, and some of her grandchildren are still at home with her. When they were shaping the Unity movement, Myrtle Fillmore asked, “Who will take care of the children?” She answered with “I will.” I think Myrtle Fillmore and Josephine Stout who also said “I will” would have liked each other. Both answered their call to service in incredible ways. And here at Unity of the Valley we also ask, “Who will take care of the children?” We need you. Talk to me!

With Love, Sherry

Prayer for March Joining Hearts and Voices

In Spirit, we are all one. There is no separation, nothing to keep us apart. Each of us contributes uniquely to the song of the world as we know it at Unity.

The song inside each of us is one of joy, peace, love, and praise for our spiritual home. Our song is guided by the spirit of love in our hearts.

As we share our song with others, we join our hearts and voices in loving harmony, and our community is uplifted.

The music of the winds of change is a composition filled with peace, hope, and the knowledge that all is well.

Thank you, Spirit, for the inspiration and joy of your song of possibilities.

Message from Our Co-Associate Minister Rev. Inge Tarantola

Dear Friends in Unity,

The topic for this month is Embracing the Winds of Change, and we are indeed facing major changes as we

go through this transition of finding a new minister. Our deepest gratitude goes to Reverend Ed for all the gifts he has brought us. We wish him the very best as he discovers the next steps on his journey. Change is a given. It is what it is, and we must grieve our loss as we adjust to the changes that are taking place. It is comforting to know that Ed will stay in Eugene!

This transition is yet another chance to pull together as a spiritual community an opportunity to minister to one another. Each one of us is invited to share our strengths, skills and talents, to contribute whatever makes our heart sing. Together, we will come out stronger in the end.

This is your opportunity to make a difference. Our commitment is to the Unity teachings and to one another in our spiritual community. We are family as we join together, United we stand in Unity!

God’s Richest Blessings, Inge

Prayer Shawl Ministry Tuesdays, 12:00-1:00 pm

Starting March 12

You are invited to join the circle to knit or crochet a prayer shawl. Don’t know how? No problem! We’ll teach you.

Out of a single stand of yarn, a flowing fabric emerges that will eventually wrap itself around another’s shoulders

and speak love into another’s heart, a visual enveloping expression of the Mystery of love.

These shawls will bless people who are going through a difficult time with a gift

they can wrap around themselves to bring comfort, love and peace.

The Power of Affirmative Prayer Dear Friends,

March: the month of endings and new beginnings. Standard time gives way to Daylight Savings Time. Winter’s roaring Lion becomes the gentle Lamb of Spring. Daffodils spring out of their winter beds into glorious gold in the garden. Lent, Palm Sunday, and Good Friday lead us into Easter’s celebration. These changes are noted on our calendars, visible to our senses. We are free to ignore or appreciate them. We can respond to them as just the same old stuff, maybe going to church for a change because it seems to be the thing to do at Easter. We can be glad that the rain is no longer as cold as it was in the winter OR,

We can take the outside inside. We can meditate upon the growth process of the daffodil as it rests in winter’s darkness, preparing itself to burst forth in ever expanding beauty in the spring. Is there a connection between us and the daffodil? Do we correspond in any way? Of course! All of creation takes place in, by, and of God. Humankind stands apart from the daffodil and other life forms only because our inheritance includes the power to reason and to choose our beliefs and actions, whereas the daffodil and similar life forms have no such choice. A daffodil must always be a daffodil. An animal relies upon instinct, a human upon intellect.

I choose to let go and let God express through me in wise, kind, and loving ways, so that peace and love and goodness really do begin with me. Care to join me?

Love and Blessings, MaryEllen

Message from Our Music Director

Jon West

In January, I had the joy and honor of joining Revs. Sherry and Inge for our first meeting as a ministerial team. Many other people are essential to our team, but this was just a nuts-and-bolts talk about the immediate needs we needed to fill in the wake of Rev. Ed's

upcoming departure. One need was a theme for the month of March. Sherry suggested Embracing the Winds of Change. Inge and I, knowing better than to argue with divine insight, quickly agreed.

When I think of embracing the winds of change, I envision standing on the bow of a sailing vessel as it glides and plunges ahead toward unknown waters. The sky above is of the deepest blue, with a mountainous cloud or two glinting gold in the sun. The world I knew has broken free of its moorings, and it's all beauty in motion, yet grounded in the invisible, unspeakable power of Spirit. The air is ocean-fresh, and I cannot seem to breath enough of it until I realize that the aching in my chest is not for oxygen. It is the awakened rumbling of the Spirit within. It is the thundering of divine love for all of Life, for existence itself, of which I am a pure spark.

This is the opportunity we are each given: to face the vastness before us with our sails fully raised, receiving every ounce of lift and guidance the winds of Spirit are offering. Our church community is itself a vessel through which we can support each other on this path of transformation. Working together as a committed crew, there is no limit to the number of lives we can change.

My own inspiration of late has been to write some new music for our children to sing with us at the start and end of Sunday services. We are all on this amazing adventure together, each of us with precious gifts to share. I am so looking forward to sharing the ride with you!

With Love, Jon

A Note from Your Administrator Géna Duel

“Embracing the Winds of Change.” The only constant in life is change. Yet, allowing and flowing with change oftentimes brings up a lot of resistance, especially when I don’t feel I have all the information I “want” to move

through that change. I find myself saying, “Please, God, can’t I have a little consistency?” And, indeed, the consistency is change.

When bigger changes appear, it’s easy to get caught up in, and get more intense with, the day-to-day “to dos” and “lists” I think I “have to” start and finish. Yet, taking a few moments to just STOP, close my eyes, take a few deep breaths, and connect with Spirit completely changes (that consistency thing again) the way in which I am feeling internally about my “to dos,” “lists,” and “have tos” which begins to change how I go about viewing them and doing them. I start to feel more spaciousness internally, which allows me to connect with how I might be viewing the bigger changes happening around me and in me.

So, I say, “Thank You God for change.” I will continue to STOP, close my eyes, take a few deep breaths, and connect with You. I will continue to listen for Your guidance in how to embrace and flow through and with the changes with even more ease.

Here at Unity of the Valley, we are being gifted with another opportunity to flow with change. May we embrace it with love and compassion in our hearts, gratefulness for the gifts Rev. Ed brought to us, and the wisdom and wonder to embrace and explore this newest opportunity of change together with grace and ease.

Hugs, Géna

News from Youth & Family Ministry

Thank you, Galileans, for your loving exchange of kind words and beautiful red roses with the residents of Good Samaritan Care Center in February. Eyes were bright and hearts light as you returned from that time of giving, and it was easy to see how Spirit worked in and through you that day. Thank you, Alison, for being the devoted leader of these sparkling youth – and for providing the exciting Lumindorf curriculum.

Unikids – it was delightful to watch you smile as you shared all the things and people that you are connected to in your lives. Your work displayed on the wall in the Garden room is delightful. I know you are also enjoying the stories told through the parables in the Bible. Your time of meditation, which includes your Unitots friends sitting in the circle with you, is so special and peaceful and reverent. Thanks, Mark and Barbara, for adding the musical portion to the hour of being together. We appreciate you! Lee, thank you for reading the Bible stories so well. Thank you, Karen, Whitney, and Casey for being so present with the children, and, of course, thank you June, for your quiet, gentle ways and all the planning you do, along with Alison!

Sally and Raymond – Thank you for caring so much about our Uniteens. The difference you are making in their lives is felt and deeply appreciated by all.

Y.O.U.ers We know you are out there, and we haven’t forgotten you. Won’t you help us find that perfect person(s) to be with you and expand your group?

We are here to support you in having what you would like to have for your experience at Unity, and we could use your assistance in making it happen.

Parents – Thank you for sharing your children with us. It is our pleasure to be with them. Won’t you join us? You’ll be glad you did!

To quote a saying from the past: We are making the best better! Love, Sherry Lady

Sister Helen Prejean Comes to Unity Author of Dead Man Walking Sunday, March 17–10 am

Special Presentation

Sister Helen Prejean has been instrumental in sparking international dialogue on the death penalty and helping to shape the Catholic Church’s newly vigorous opposition to state executions. At the age of 40, she realized that being on the side of poor people was an essential part of the Gospel. She moved into the St. Thomas Housing Project in New Orleans and began working at Hope House. During this time, she was asked to correspond with a death row inmate. She agreed, and became his spiritual adviser.

A dying man is alone, except for the love of a Catholic sister. He is a castaway, considered untouchable and worthy of death by his society. The nun comforts him and says, "I can't bear the thought that you would die without seeing one loving face. I will be the face of Christ for you." She is Sister Helen Prejean, a Sister of St. Joseph of Medaille. He is one of four convicted of murder whom she has accompanied to the death chamber in Louisiana.

She is the author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States, published in 1993. The book became a best seller, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, and spawned an Oscar-winning movie and an internationally-acclaimed opera.
