A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE ~ By: Pastor Todd Shipley

WHEN A CHILD LEAVES Oct 01, 2015 by M. Craig Barnes

We just took our son Karl to St. Olaf College for his freshman year. It was hard for me, scary and exciting

for him, and wounding for his mother.

I’ve been his stepfather for ten years, and he’s been woven into the fabric of my life. But my grief at his

leaving is different from his mother’s. I think of this transition as a necessary loss of which I am proud.

He got into a good school and will embark on a series of challenges that will help him find his life.

“That’s the way growing up in our society works,” I think. His mother agrees, but she already acutely

feels the loss of not having his dirty socks to pick up.

Part of what fascinates me about this dynamic is that she took the lead in helping him find the right

school. Two years ago she bought copies of books like America’s Best Colleges and went to the

seminars offered by Karl’s guidance counselors on college preparation. I went on a couple of the

college tours, but she hauled him around the country for most of them and did a second round after he

was accepted into his top schools. The evening he decided to go to St. Olaf, she eagerly took a picture

of him wearing a new St. Olaf T-shirt. She made a long list of things he would need for college,

accompanied him on countless trips to Target, shipped his new stuff to school, and helped him prepare

his dorm room after we arrived. All of it was a deeply satisfying, joyful experience of being his mom.

The last couple of weeks before he left, Karl was nervous that he would not perform well at college, that

everyone there would be smarter than he, and that he’d have to work too hard, go on to grad school, and

never again have any fun. These are the feelings of a 19-year-old. Through it all his mother consoled

and reassured him. He had no idea she was nudging him to rip out her heart and take it halfway across

the country.

She held up pretty well as we made our way through the various events of new student orientation. It

was particularly helpful that St. Olaf had a worship service for parents and students just before we drove

to the airport. We sang a hymn that began with the notation that all should sing in harmony on the first

verse. I was confused by the ordering of the verses, but my wife said that she appreciated beginning

with harmony, which is an entanglement of voices, and then moving on to have the parents sing a verse

alone, followed by students singing alone on the third verse. Finally, on the fourth verse, we found our

unison voice, no longer entangled.

The hard part for her came when we returned home. I was eager to get back to the safe place of

sanctuary and normality, but she dreaded it. She suggested that we go to a restaurant before returning

to the house. She was buying time. When we got home she loaded the family dog into her car and

drove around town for a while because it hurt too much to be in a house where she couldn’t find Karl.

After she posted some of her feelings on Facebook, she received many responses from other mothers

who have a child in college. One mother told her that she slept on the sofa while her son was a freshman

but would return to her bed when he was home for a visit. Another said it was important to leave the

light on in her son’s bedroom.

As a fumbling husband I asked my wife, “How can I help you through this?” She quickly responded,

“Please don’t try to rescue me from this hole.” It’s where she needs to be. It is what she signed up for on

the day she first cradled Karl in her arms.

She always knew this day was coming, but the knowledge waited in a dark corner of her heart,

distracted by the light of birthday candles, bedtime stories, Little League games, piano recitals, cross

country meets, high school prom, and teary conversations when he made a bad choice along the way.

And there were all of those delicious ordinary dinners, where Karl would take his turn saying the

blessing over the meal she made. She filled each of these moments with as much love as she had in her

heart. Now that she’s seen the fruit of her labors, how can she not be in a hole?

We all live with a variety of callings in our lives. All of them—including a mother’s calling to prepare her

child to leave her—are costly.

GEORGE’S HILL ~ by: Carol Dunn and Dawn Brezina

George’s Hill First Year Anniversary Luncheon was held on October 8th. Hard to believe a

year has already gone by. The Luncheon was well attended by outsiders from the Community

as well as all of our monthly attendees. Jeff Aube emceed the Program and led the group with

the Pledge of Allegiance. Our guest, Cecilia Burns from Vitas, played the guitar leading us all

in God Bless America, later following up with a Sing-A-Long. And what a great job Diane

Henderson did reading the poem “Beatitudes for Friends of the Aged.” Pastor Todd concluded the

program with an explanation of just who we are and what we do every month. Pastor Todd let all

attendees play one of the “mind activity” games we play each month so that everyone could get a feel

for how the program works.

Thank You Pastor Todd for all your time and energy you put into George’s Hill each month.

Many people have made this Program a success during the first year through donations and we would

like to give them a special thanks.

Was that snow we saw last week?? Get ready for a long winter … so they say.

B&G is looking for some volunteers for one time tasks that are better off being done during the week when unfortunately B&G members are either at school or work.

We are in need of a person/persons to:

Dispose of all the old flammable items that have been in storage for years.

Make a dump run

Volunteer to clean the carpet in the sanctuary (we provide equipment) If you can help – please contact B&G.

We will be adding mums to the outside for a nice fall look!! Church is looking good.

We are in process of getting quotes for both the repaving of the back drive (will also make the back entrance handicap accessible) and a bathroom remodel. Once the figures are in hand they will be presented to Council and the Congregation.

Here is your 12 point checklist to prepare your home for winter:

Get your mind in the gutters. Inspect and clean gutters and downspouts.

Button up your overcoat. Seal gaps and cracks around windows and doors with weather-stripping

and caulk.

Get on top of roof problems. Inspect your roof for damaged or curled shingles, corroded flashing,

or leaky vents.

Walks the walks (and drives). Take steps to repair damaged sidewalks, driveways, and steps.

Chill out. Drain and winterize outdoor faucets and irrigation systems.

Freshen your filter. Clean or replace dirty furnace filters.

Give your furnace a physical. Have a professional inspect your heating system.

Gather round the hearth. Check fireplaces for soot or creosote build-up. Better yet, schedule a

visit from a reputable chimney sweep.

Keep the humidifier humming. Clean the plates or pads to ensure efficient operation.

Head-off gas problems. If you have a gas-fired room heater, have it inspected by a pro. Also,

perform any routine maintenance recommended by the maker.

Keep the wood fires burning brightly. Wood stoves are making a comeback. To avoid a deadly

situation, be sure to inspect yours before firing it up.

Keep your family safe at home. A home safety check should be an annual ritual in every

household. Test smoke and CO monitors, inspect (or install) fire extinguishers, review fire escape

plans, and rid your home of old newspapers and other fire hazards.

Be safe, Keep warm, God bless - Sharon

HEALTH REMINDERS: SPACE HEATERS AND FLU SHOTS ~ By: Louise Evans, R.N.

"KEEP SAFE, WHILE YOU KEEP WARM THIS WINTER"

Space heaters can be a quick way to heat up a room. However, they can be as dangerous as they are

convenient if used improperly. Space heaters cause 25,000 home fires a year, and 6,000 emergency

room visits, according to the Harvard University Environmental Health & Safety group. Approximately

one third of all house fires nationwide happen during the cold home heating months between December

and February. Equipment that is intended to add a little extra warmth, such as space heaters, is the

leading cause of these fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPE).

As part of its Teach Learn Care TLC campaign, Safe Electricity urges everyone in the home understand

the importance of using space heaters safely. Some cities have banned the use of many types of

portable space heaters. Before purchasing or using any type of space heater, check with your local fire

department to find out if it is legal in your community.

Safe Electricity offers the following precautions when using electric space heaters and electric blankets:

Purchase only space heaters that have been safety tested and UL approved. Make sure the unit is

equipped with an emergency tip over shutoff feature and heating element guards. Read and follow

all of the manufacturer’s instructions for operation and care.

Before using a space heater, make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in good

working condition.

Check to make sure the heater is clean and in good condition, and have all problems professionally

repaired.

Place heater out of high traffic areas and on a level, hard, nonflammable floor surface—NOT on

carpets, furniture or countertops.

Space heaters have one purpose —to provide supplemental heating. Never use them to thaw pipes,

cook food, or dry clothing or towels.

Remember to keep space heaters at least three feet from combustible liquids like fuel, spray cans

and paint, as well as flammable items such as draperies, blankets and sofas.

Never allow pets or children near an electric heater. Accidental contact could result in serious shock

or burns.

Do not overload circuits. Never use extension cords or multiple plugs with a space heater, and make

sure the unit is not plugged into the same circuit as other electric appliances.

If your space heater is plugged into a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) and the GFCI trips, don’t

assume there is something wrong with the GFCI. Immediately stop using the heater until it can be

checked by a professional— if not, a serious shock could occur.

Never leave space heaters unattended. Turn off your space heater and unplug it before leaving the

room or going to bed.

Replace older space heaters with newer, safer models.

Many people also use electric blankets to keep warm during cold winter nights. Before plugging in

electric blankets, check for any damage and inspect cord for frays, cracks or cuts. Electric blankets

should not be tucked under the mattress and nothing should be placed on top of the blanket while it’s

in use, including comforters and bedspreads.

Pets should never be allowed to sleep on the electric blanket.

ANNUAL FLU SHOT REMINDER It's time to get your annual flu shot. Get it

from your doctor, the flu clinics that are advertised or from your super market

or pharmacy. They are easy to get and are covered by Medicare and most

other insurances.
