Thailand Rice: Production Forecast Lower as Acreage Declines

USDA forecasts 2014/15 milled rice production in Thailand at 19.5 million metric tons, down

1.0 million or 4.9 percent from last month and down 4.7 percent from last year. Harvested area is

forecast at 10.5 million hectares, down 0.4 million or 3.7 percent from last month and 3.8 percent

from last year. Yield is estimated at 2.81 tons per hectare, down 1.3 percent from last month and

0.9 percent from last year. Government restrictions on irrigation water distribution and falling

domestic rice prices caused farmers to reduce rice area during the winter or dry season. The dry

season crop is the second of two annual rice crops, with the summer wet season crop accounting

for 72 percent of total production. Satellite imagery analysis has confirmed that rice area in

Argentina Corn: Recent Rain Showers Promote Crop Progress

The 2014/15 Argentina corn crop is forecast at 23.0 million metric tons, a 4.5 percent increase

from last month but a 12 percent drop from last year. Recent rains have reversed the dryness in

the south, including central Buenos Aires, La Pampa, and western Cordoba and in the northern

and western fringes of the agricultural regions. Harvested area forecasts remain unchanged from

last month at 3.0 million hectares, a 12 percent drop from last year. Yield is forecast at 7.67 tons

per hectare, up 4.6 percent from last month and 0.3 percent from last year. Only about half the

corn crop was seeded by the first week of December and crop stage varies across the country.

The crop condition is reported as excellent around the delegation of Marco Juárez within the

province of Cordoba, where some corn was planted later and is just now entering the late

vegetative stage into pollination. In the drier region of Entre Rios, early planted corn is ready for

harvest. (For additional information, please contact [email protected].)

Ukraine Corn: Bumper Harvest Stands as Second-Highest on Record

USDA estimates Ukraine corn

production for 2014/15 at 28.5

million metric tons, up 1.45 million

from last month and second only to

last year’s record output of 30.9

million. The month-to-month

change is based on preliminary data

released by the State Statistical

Committee of Ukraine. Harvested

area is estimated at 4.6 million

hectares, which, like the estimated

output, is the second-highest level

on record. Yield is estimated at 6.15

tons per hectare, up 4.8 percent

from last month, down 3.9 percent from last year, and 13 percent above the 5-year average.

A steady increase in the use of imported hybrid seed over the past ten years has been largely

responsible for a concurrent increase in yield, and seed imports for the 2014/15 crop increased by

about 20 percent from the previous year. The year-to-year drop in yield, despite the higher seed

imports, is attributed to two factors, hot and dry weather conditions and high input prices.

Although the overall weather during the growing season was not remarkably unfavorable, the

corn crop in several key territories in central and south-central Ukraine was subject to stress due

to hot and dry August weather. In addition, prices for mineral fertilizer and imported agricultural

chemicals increased by an estimated 25 percent this season following a significant drop in the

value of the hyrvna (UAH). As a result, imports of agricultural chemicals decreased by 15

percent from the previous year, including a 21-percent drop in herbicide imports, according to

data from the Global Trade Information Service. (For more information, please contact

Argentina Soybeans: Recent Rains Replenish Soil Moisture, Encourages Planting

USDA estimates the 2014/15

Argentina soybean production

at 56.0 million metric tons, up

1.8 percent from last month

and 3.7 percent from last year.

Harvested area is estimated at

20 million hectares, unchanged

from last month but up 1

percent from last year. Yield

is estimated at 2.80 metric tons

per hectare, up 1.8 percent

from last month and 2.7

percent from last year.

Slow planting progress was

reported in the north western

part of the country due to

dryness. Recent scattered rains

increased soil moisture for

crop emergence and

establishment in some regions

but additional favorable rain is

needed to ensure heathy,

vigorous crop stands in

western and southern regions. Soybeans in southern Cordoba are experiencing good growth, as

recent timely rainfall aided plants entering pod set. Progress is slower in the province of Santa

Fe, where second-crop soybeans are slow to reach a complete canopy cover due to excessive

moisture on no-tilled wheat stubble where soybeans were directly seeded. High rainfall in

northern areas resulted in some crop disease showing up in fields with heavier soils. (For

additional information, please contact [email protected].)

Brazil Soybeans: Production Decrease Due to Dry January Weather

USDA estimates 2014/15 Brazil soybean production at a record 94.5 million metric tons, down

1.0 million from last month but up 7.8 million tons or 9.0 percent from last year. Harvested area

is estimated at a record 31.5 million hectares, unchanged from last month but up 1.4 million or

4.7 percent from last year. Yield is estimated at 3.00 tons per hectare, down 1.0 percent from

last month.

Brazil’s soybean yields have decreased due to drier weather in Goias, Minas Gerais and southern

Bahia. These states account for roughly 18 percent of Brazil’s soybean production. Rio Grande

do Sul has experienced above normal rainfall and potential increase in yields that should help

offset some of the losses in the drier areas. Soybean harvest is now 6 to 8 percent complete, with

the bulk of the harvest to occur in February. (For more information, please contact

Malaysia Palm Oil: Production Forecast Lower

USDA forecasts 2014/15 palm

oil production in Malaysia at a

record 20.5 million metric tons,

down 0.75 million from last

month but up 0.3 million

compared to last year. Mature oil

palm area is estimated at 4.69

million hectares up 0.16 million

or 4 percent from last year.

Government authorities have

indicated that torrential rainfall

and flooding caused lower than

expected crop yields and harvest

activity in the past few months.

December rainfall was especially

high, with up to 1,750 millimeters or 70 inches of rain occurring in important growing areas in

peninsular West Malaysia. The heaviest accumulations occurred in the states of Pahang,

Terengganu, and Kelantan.

The Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) reported in January that approximately 184,000

hectares of oil palm plantations were affected by flooding, representing about 18 percent of total

planted area in the affected states. Malaysia is currently in the low seasonal production period

(Jan-Apr), with yields expected to improve over the next 6 months. However, industry observers

also reported that a shortage of skilled plantation labor is hampering harvest operations, while an

aging tree population is contributing to lower national yields. Malaysia will soon be entering the

period (March-November) when palm oil yield rises. (For additional information, please contact

[email protected].)

Argentina Wheat: Harvest Closes with Mixed Results

USDA forecasts Argentina wheat

production for 2014/15 at 12.5

million metric tons, up 0.5

million tons or 4.2 percent from

last month and 19 percent from

last year. Area is estimated at 4.2

million hectares, up 2.4 percent

from last month and up 20

percent from last year. Yield is

forecast at 2.98 tons per hectare,

up 1.7 percent from last month

but down 0.8 percent from last

year. Fluctuating temperatures

throughout the season, sporadic

rainfall, and uneven stand

establishment all contributed to

the final estimate of area

harvested and yield as well as to the grain quality. The central and southern growing regions

experienced a warmer than normal season punctuated with brief episodes of cold weather,

hastening the wheat pollination phase and reducing grain yield and quality. Some areas in Santa

Fe, Entre Rios, and Buenos Aires had intense rainfall during much of the season, resulting in

localized disease and loss of nitrogen fertility from fields prior to pollination and grain fill. In

the northern wheat regions as well as into Cordoba, dry conditions prevailed, negatively

affecting pollination and subsequent grain fill. (For additional information, please contact

TABLE 18 The table below presents a record of the differences between the February projection and the final Estimate. Using world wheat production as an example, the "root mean square error” means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the current forecast will not be above or below the final estimate by more than 0.6 percent. Chances are 9 out of 10 (90% confidence level) that the difference will not exceed 1.0 percent. The average difference between the February projection and the final estimate is 2.5 million tons, ranging from 0.0 million to 7.3 million tons. The February projection has been below the estimate 25 times and above 8 times.
