26. Significance ARCHITECTURE, RELIGION, SOCIAL. German immigrant and merchant Louis

Silverstein organized Temple B'nai Isreal in 1865. The congregation, reorganized in

1892, met in various locations u n t i l Victoria contractor Joseph Gruy completed the

classically-inspired brick temple in 1923. Victoria's Jewish community has used the

temple continuously since that time.
