Concerning item 7 of the provisional agenda
List of exonyms of the German Democratic Republic
Prepared by the Surveying and Mapping ,Ydministration of the. . Ministrv of the Interior of- the German Democratic Reoublic
Introduction
Pursuant ‘to the definition of the term "exonyms" (tradi-
tional names),/of resolution No. 28 of the second United Nations
Conference on'the Standardization of Geographical Names and the
extended tasks according to resolutions fti 18 and 19 of the thirc
Conference, the regulations concerning tho determination of
exonyms have been reviewed in the German Democratic Republic.
The list is available in its revised form. The GDR has already
reduced the number of exonyms according to the above resolution:
It was felt that there shauld be*a general. accordance between -
the reduction of exonyms while safeguarding the national intett
:-es t s of the country on whose territory the geographical object
to be named is situated and the reduction of exonyms while
safeguarding the own interests. .I
As to the. snelling of the names of settlements, the general
use of the particular national names in the GCR is stipula, ted. ,
Exemptions are only made as far as the names of capitals of
states and some other names of important towns are concerned.
They E re ir!c.?;.cdod in t!7C list.
In this connection, the following forms are applicable:
- the national spelling, e.g. Praha,
- the national spelling and the German name in parentheses, e.g.
\’ 750046/2 Gr. \ ti r a h a (Prag), and in special small-scaled cartographic
products the German name only, e. g. Pra g.
The German spelling of names for physical-geographical objects ii
proceeds,. intef: alia, from the fact that .
a) in names which consist of a proper name and a generic term,
the generic term should be given in German, e. gF Kai
N a w a r i n (not mys Nawarin);
b) names consisting of an adje.ctive and a generic term should
be regarded as a unity and thus should not be partian! trans- #i
lated into German, e. g. R o c k y M 0 u n t a i n s (not
Rockygebirge);
c) proper names which are adjectives should be used as nouns
together with the German generic term, e. g. Momage-
b i r g e (not p‘iomski chrebet).
The follov;i g list ivcludes those geographical names which r 1, -._ 'can also be spelled in German or have also a spe'lling which
is i'n common use in international .trade and communication. The
list is classified as follo?Js: names for settlements, arms of
oceans,'lakes, rivers and canals, mountains, peaks and capes,
landscapes and peninsulas, islands.
The list dq,es not include any names of.states, meiber states,
federal states, republics of a union, international ocesans, arm
.- Ptf_oceans and undersea reliefs. . ___-.. _
