Tuesday, June 20, 20172Saudi says captured 3 Iran guards from boat

Sanctionscould last years: UAE

Riyadh

Saudi Arabia said yesterday that it captured three

Iranian Revolutionary Guards aboard an explosive-laden boat heading to an oil platform in the Gulf.

The three “are now being questioned by Saudi authorities,” the information and culture ministry said in a statement, at a time of already-heightened tensions with Iran.

The latest statement came more than 12 hours after Saudi Arabia said it had seized weapons from a boat captured in the Gulf’s Marjan field at about 8:30 pm Friday.

Three small boats entered Saudi territorial waters at about 8:30 pm on Friday and “headed at speed towards platforms of (the) Saudi oil field of Marjan”, a government statement said.

Saudi naval forces fired warning shots at the boats, which were carrying “red and white flags”, and captured one of the vessels but two escaped, the statement added. (AFP)

Paris

Qatar’s diplomatic isolation could last years until it

abandons its support for jihadists, a United Arab Emirates minister said yesterday.

“We do not want to escalate, we want to isolate,” state minister for foreign affairs Anwar Gargash told journalists during a visit to Paris.

“This isolation can take years,” Gargash said.

“They support groups linked to Al-Qaeda in Syria, Libya... and in Yemen.

“This state is weaponising jihadists and Islamists, it is using this as a weapon of influence,” he added.

But by applying pressure on gas-rich Qatar through sanctions, “we have a golden opportunity to break this support”, he said.

In the next few days, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt will submit a list of demands to Qatar, which is likely to include the expulsion of radical individuals.

“There must be some people who are wise in Qatar and who will prevail, hopefully within the ruling family,” Gargash said.

“This is not about regime change, it is about behaviour change.” (AFP)

The fire was reported at around 4 am at the yard located near the factory of Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) in Askar.

Around 24 Civil Defence vehicles were also at the scene to help the firefighters extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported.

“Despite the spreading of the flames, the fire was contained and then the cooling operation and other firefighting procedures were taken,” Civil Defence General Director, Brigadier-General, Abdulaziz Rashid Al Amer said in a statement here yesterday.

The official explained that the operations room

received the call at 3:46 am, and the Civil Defence teams reached the scene within five minutes and started works to prevent the flames from reaching nearby factories.

Besides a large amount of smoke, there was no danger to the public or to businesses in the area.

“No casualties were reported and an investigation has been launched to find the reason for the fire,” Al Amer added. Interior Ministry later confirmed that the firefighters succeeded in extinguishing the fire.

Another fireMeanwhile, Civil Defence firemen extinguished another blaze that erupted at a house in Isa Town at around 12noon.

Interior Ministry clarified on its official Twitter page that “the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit”, adding that the damages were caused to the house, but no injuries were reported.

The High Criminal Court yesterday sentenced ten

men involved in the death of a Bahraini teacher and the injury of her three children in East Eker last year.

The court awarded death penalty to one of the accused, life imprisonment for another and three years jail for the rest, in addition to stripping the citizenships of two of the accused.

The defendants were involved in the terrorist explosion that occurred on Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah near East Eker last June, targeting security forces.

The explosion caused the death of Fakhriya Muslim, 42, while she was driving her vehicle with her three children seated.

Shrapnel from the bomb penetrated her head causing her to crash her car into an iron barrier in the middle of the road.

Three of her children who were with her in the car were injured. Muslim died before her children’s eyes.

As a result of intensified

investigations, the suspects were soon identified and arrested.

In the interrogation, they confessed to receiving military training by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

The accused were charged with premeditated murder, communication with a foreign state, possession and acquisition of explosives and weapons without authorisation, use of explosives resulting in the death of a human, endangering public and private transportation as well as training on the use of weapons and explosives to commit and participate in terrorist crimes.

Diplomats meet Russian officialDT News NetworkManama

The Ambassador of Bahrain, Ahmed Abdulrahman

Al Sa’ati, the Ambassador of Egypt, Dr Mohammed Al Badri, the Charge d’affaires of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Al Shimari, and the First Secretary at the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed Al Mansoori, met member of Russia’s Duma, Leonid Slutsky yesterday.

The four diplomats briefed him on the damage and losses suffered by their countries as a result of the support of Qatar for terrorist groups over the past years and the political efforts made by these countries to dissuade Doha from its aggressive policies, who did not respond to them.

This, they said, forced the four countries to take the decision to sever diplomatic relations with Qatar to protect their national security and the safety of their peoples and territories.

The policeman who was killed in a terrorist

explosion in Diraz on Sunday was laid to rest yesterday. Hundreds attended the funeral of Abdul Samad Haji, 31, at Hunainiya Graveyard in West Riffa.

Haji was killed and two other policemen suffered multiple injuries when the police patrol vehicle they were travelling in was targeted by a bomb near one of the entrances to Diraz village on Sunday night.

A reliable source told DT News that the injured policemen are in critical condition.

“The martyr just got his family to Bahrain only a few days ago and it is really unfortunate that he is no more,” the source, who wished not to be named, added.

The blast happened almost a month after a major security operation was carried out in Diraz to disperse an illegal gathering inside the village that lasted for more than 11 months.

Five individuals were killed and more than 30 policemen were injured in the operation, which resulted in the arrest of more than 280 people including escaped convicts and wanted terrorists.

Following Prince Salman’s directive

Ministry completesworks to ease traffic congestion

Manama

The Works Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry

yesterday announced it has completed the implementation of its first project to reduce traffic congestions across vital interchanges in the Kingdom. It is part of 11 projects designed to improve roads and connectivity in the Kingdom.

The move follows the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister to reduce traffic congestion across different parts in Bahrain.

Explaining, Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs & Urban Planning, Essam Khalaf said that the project provided an additional U-turn lane along the Financial Harbour Interchange. The project commenced in March and was completed in three months time.

The minister also announced that the improvement procedure, which

includes a U-turn lane and a central reservation, will also be implemented along the King Faisal Highway and the Financial Harbour Interchange soon. The move is expected to reduce trip time by 20 per cent. To do a U-turn, it takes 72 seconds now, while it took 93 seconds before, the minister pointed out.

Phase 2 of the work includes increasing the length of the additional lane up to the pedestrian bridge, once the electricity services conflicting with the work are transferred. Work is expected to commence in the fourth quarter.

“King Faisal Highway is one of the vital highways impacting traffic in Manama Centre. By providing this additional lane, a smooth flow will occur for traffic coming from Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway and heading towards the Diplomatic Area, the Financial Harbour, Central Manama and Muharraq,” the Minister said.

London

British Prime Minister Theresa May vowed

yesterday to fight extremism in all its forms after a white driver ploughed his van into a crowd of Muslims near a mosque.

It was the fourth terror strike in a tumultuous four months in Britain.

Ten people were injured in the attack which took place yesterday after evening prayers in Finsbury Park, north London.

One elderly man, who had collapsed just before the incident, was pronounced dead at the scene, but it is not yet known whether his death was directly linked to the attack.

May condemned the assault as “sickening”, saying Britain’s determination to fight “terrorism, extremism and hatred... must be the same, whoever is responsible”.

The 47-year-old van driver was pinned down by people at the scene before being detained by police.

He was later arrested on suspicion of “the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder and attempted murder”, the police said.

The Finsbury Park Mosque said the van “deliberately mowed down Muslim men and women leaving late evening prayers” at the mosque and the nearby Muslim Welfare House shortly after midnight.

Security Minister Ben Wallace told BBC radio that the suspect was “not known to us”.

Car ploughs into police van in Paris Champs-Elysees ‘attack’Paris

A 31-year-old man on a jihadist watchlist rammed

a car loaded with guns and a gas bottle into a police van on the Champs-Elysees yesterday but inflicted no casualties, in the latest of a string of attacks in Paris, sources said.

The assailant died in the incident, although investigators offered no immediate details about the cause of his death. There was no early claim of responsibility for the assault.

The attack -- which occurred just a short distance from where a jihadist shot dead a police officer, two months earlier -- was carried out by an individual who had been on France’s security watchlist since 2015 for membership of “the radical Islamist movement,” sources close to the probe said.

They identified him as Djaziri Adam Lotfi, who had been raised in the hardline Salafi Islamic ideology, and did not have a criminal record.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said a car hit the leading vehicle in a line of police vans as they headed down the Champs-Elysees, near the Grand Palais exhibition hall.

“The security forces have been targeted in France once again,” he said.

Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said the car, a white Renault Megane, caught fire.

Video showed a thick orange smoke pouring from the car after the impact as the vehicle sat in the middle of the prestigious avenue which is lined with shops and cinemas.

Police sources said that they

found a Kalashnikov assault rifle, two handguns as well as a gas bottle on the car.

The “arms, explosives... could potentially blow this car up,” Collomb said. Sources previously said that there were multiple gas bottles in the car.

No police or bystanders were injured in the incident, which occurred near the Grand Palais exhibition hall.

“People were running every which way,” said a 51-year-old bystander who gave his name only as Alexandre. “Some shouted at me to get away.”

Anti-terrorism prosecutors have opened an investigation.

Police closed two of the Metro stations on the Champs-Elysees, but two hours after the attack tourists were back taking selfies of the Arc de Triomphe and visiting shops. (AFP)

London attacker who wanted to ‘kill all Muslims’ was saved by imamLondon

Worshippers leaving a London mosque yesterday were helping an

elderly man who had collapsed when a van deliberately rammed them, driven by an attacker who shouted: “I want to kill all Muslims”, witnesses said.

Shortly after midnight, the van swerved towards people who had just left prayers at the Finsbury Park Mosque and the Muslim Welfare House in north London and were assisting their stricken fellow worshipper.

The man who collapsed was pronounced dead at the scene and 10 people were injured, with eight taken to hospital.

But the driver, pinned to the ground and facing a mob beating, was saved by the Welfare House imam who ordered infuriated younger men to stand back.

Locals pounced on the driver and two or three men pinned him down, then others waded in, trying to punch and kick him.

Imam Mohammed Mahmoud then stepped in and, according to onlookers, saved the driver’s life by ordering angry bystanders to stand away.

Iran sends a message with missile strike in Syria

Egypt sentences policeman to 10 years over protester’s death

Tehran

Iran has targeted jihadists in Syria with missiles in retaliation for deadly attacks in Tehran, but the strike was also a message

to its regional rivals and Washington, experts say.Late Sunday, the elite Revolutionary Guards launched six

missiles from western Iran into Syria’s mostly Islamic State group-held Deir Ezzor province, hitting an IS command base, the Guards said.

The strike was “revenge” for twin attacks in Tehran on June 7 that killed 17 people in the first IS-claimed attacks inside the Shiite-ruled Islamic republic, a Guards spokesman added.

Cairo

An Egyptian policeman was sentenced to 10 years in jail yesterday for the deadly shooting of a protester during a

January 2015 rally, judicial and security officials said.Shaima al-Sabbagh was hit with birdshot pellets on January

24, 2015 on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the anti-Hosni Mubarak uprising as police dispersed a march.

Sabbagh, a 34-year-old mother, was with other activists carrying a wreath to Cairo’s Tahrir Square to commemorate the deaths of hundreds of protesters during the 2011 revolt.

“The ruling can be considered good and a victory, in the circumstances we’re currently living in,” lawyer Mohamed Abdelaziz, representing Sabbagh, said after the verdict.

Oslo

Religious leaders around the world met yesterday

in Oslo to urge further efforts to fight deforestation that is wiping out thousands of square kilometres of rainforests each year.

Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist and Jewish leaders are meeting indigenous people affected by deforestation as well as experts on climate change and human

rights over three days to devise an interfaith action plan for 2018.

It is thought to be the first time leaders from the world’s major religions have joined forces to protect tropical rainforests, “the most diverse, unique nature system on Earth”, said Lars Lovold, director of Rainforest Foundation Norway.

Rainforests are refuges of biodiversity that regulate the

climate and serve as home for “millions and millions of forest-based people”, he added.

While the rate of deforestation has slowed considerably in recent years, seven million hectares (70,000 square kilometres) of tropical forest were lost between 2000 and 2010, an area nearly the size of Ireland, according to figures from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Russia warns US after Syrian warplane downedBeirut

Russia day warned it would track US-led coalition

aircraft in Syria as potential “targets” and halted an incident-prevention hotline with Washington after US forces downed a Syrian jet.

The United States moved quickly to contain an escalation, with a top general saying Washington would work to relaunch the “deconfliction” hotline with Russia that was established in 2015.

The downing of the jet and Russia’s response came as the US-led coalition and allied fighters battle to oust the

Islamic State jihadist group from its Syrian bastion Raqa.

Analysts say neither Washington nor President Bashar al-Assad’s regime appear to be seeking further confrontation, although the risks remain high in Syria’s increasingly crowded battlefields and airspace.

Russia’s foreign ministry accused Washington of failing to use the hotline before downing the plane near Raqa, and called for a “careful investigation by the US command” into the incident.

“Any flying objects, including planes and

drones of the international coalition, discovered west of the Euphrates River will be tracked as aerial targets by Russia’s air defences on and above ground,” it warned.

“We will work diplomatically and militarily in the coming hours to re-establish deconfliction,” said US General Joe Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, referring to the hotline.

Russia to track coalition planes in Syria, halts US hotlineRussia’s defence ministry yesterday condemned the

US downing of the Syrian plane and said it would now track all coalition flights west of the Euphrates river, while suspending its use of a military hotline for avoiding incidents in Syrian airspace.

Moscow accused the US of failing to use the established communication hotline to warn Russia about the downing of the plane on Sunday.

“The command of the coalition forces did not use the established communication channel for preventing incidents in Syrian airspace,” the defence ministry said. (AFP)

Octopus inspires S. Korea ‘breakthrough’ adhesive patchThe clinging power of octopus tentacles has inspired a breakthrough new adhesive patch that works on wet and oily

surfaces with potentially huge medical and industrial uses, according to South Korean researchers.

Small ballsAfter conducting studies, the team found its impressive suction power was thanks to small balls inside the suction cups that line each of their tentacles.

It can also be used repeatedly, with one patch surviving more than 10,000 cycles of attachment and detachment without losing its suction power, he said.

This octopus-inspired system exhibits strong, highly repeatable adhesion to silicon, glass, and rough skin surfaces under various conditions -- dry, moist, underwater, and under oil

The research

team expect it to take around

three years for

the break-through to come into

commercial use.

The patch could be used for medi-cal purposes, including to help suture wounds, as they do not contain any chemical adhesives so will not irritate skin. There is currently no adhesive system that can maintain its grip in water without using strong chemicals.

The new “wet-tolerant” adhe-sive patch has been hailed as a breakthrough by the coun-try’s science and technology ministry and there are hopes it will be able to be used for everything from heavy indus-try to dressing wounds.

New patchThe team had managed to fabricate poly-mer patches covered with micro suction cups with suc-tion patch so strong that a patch the size of a thumbnail could lift an object of up to 400 grams (14.1 ounces) in water.

Boeing announced yesterday what it claims

will be the most efficient jet yet in the highly competitive civil aviation market as it tries to claw back market share from rival Airbus.

“Today, it is our pleasure to officially announce the newest member of our 737 family, the 737 MAX 10,” Kevin McAllister, head of the company’s commercial aviation division, told journalists as the Paris Air Show got under way.

It quickly announced

more than 100 orders worth some $13.5 billion (12.1 billion euros), although some were customers changing their selection of models from previous orders.

The MAX 10 will be the largest of the updated 737 series, which competes head on with Airbus’s A320 neo family. With the latest advances in engines and aerodynamics, they promise significant fuel savings to airlines, which have responded with hundreds of orders for single-aisle airlines that are the workhorses of

their fleets. Airbus, which moved first

to update its aircrafts used in most midrange flights, now has a 60 per cent market share.

The 737 MAX 10, which can carry up to 230 passengers, is the largest in the class, and Boeing said it would be five per cent cheaper to operate than the Airbus A321neo. As these planes can carry more passengers, they have attracted interest from low-cost airlines as well as carriers looking to exploit their range that allows them

to make flights across the Atlantic.

McAllister said the 737 MAX 10 will be “the most efficient single-aisle airplane in the skies”.

Boeing has a test version of the 737 MAX 9 on display at Le Bourget airport north of Paris, which hosts the air show.

For its part, Airbus announced orders for over 100 planes in its A320neo family, including at least a dozen of the latest A321neo model, worth over $11.5 billion. (AFP)

Lockheed Martin has agreed with Tata Advanced

Systems Ltd to jointly build F-16 fighter planes equipped with new-generation electronics in India, both companies said yesterday.

The fighters are of the Block 70 type, “the newest and most technologically advanced F-16 ever”, they said.

“The F-16 Block 70 is ideally suited to meet the Indian Air Force’s single-engine fighter needs and this unmatched US-Indian industry

partnership directly supports India’s initiative to develop private aerospace and defence manufacturing capacity in India,” said the statement, released on the Paris air show’s opening day.

The Indian air force does not currently use F-16s, but industry experts say that local production would be a strong argument in favour of the US plane against its rivals, including French company Dassault’s Rafale, in future procurement decisions.

Brussels

Britain and the European Union finally began

formal Brexit negotiations yesterday, vowing to work constructively for a deal despite disarray in London over whether to go for a “hard” or “soft” divorce.

Almost exactly a year after Britain’s seismic referendum to leave the bloc, the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier of France, welcomed his counterpart David Davis with a cheery handshake at the European Commission in Brussels.

The smiles belied the fact that at stake is not just Britain’s future but also Europe’s postwar political order and its place in the

world, which could be fatally undermined without an agreement by the March 2019 deadline.

“We must first tackle the uncertainties caused by Brexit,” Barnier said, citing the rights of EU citizens in Britain and the possible impact on the open border between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

“I hope today we can identify priorities and a timetable that would allow me to report to the European Council (summit) later this week that we had a constructive opening of negotiations,” added the former European commissioner and French foreign minister, speaking

against a backdrop of British and EU flags.

A key issue he did not mention was the EU’s bill for Britain to leave, which Brussels estimates at a colossal 100 billion euros.

Davis, a prominent tough-talking figure in the “Leave” campaign, sounded a positive note, saying that while there would “undoubtedly be challenging times ahead” he wanted a good relationship with the EU.

“There is more that unites us than divides us”, Davis said, referring to the latest reported terror attack overnight in London and the loss of lives in forest fires in Portugal. (AFP)

Saudi stocks soar before MSCI decisionDubai

Saudi Arabia’s stock market surged yesterday after a

regulatory official was quoted as predicting the bourse would enter MSCI’s emerging market index sooner than most investors had expected, while the rest of the region was subdued.

Mohammed El-Kuwaiz, vice chairman of the Capital Market Authority, was quoted as saying by the Asharq al-Awsat newspaper that he expected the Saudi market to be included in the index by the end of 2018.

MSCI will announce later today whether it is putting Saudi Arabia on a list for possible index inclusion. Most funds think Riyadh has done enough to be included, but if MSCI follows its usual timetable, actual entry would occur in mid-2019. However, MSCI has the flexibility to move faster if it wishes.

The Saudi stock index rose 2.4 per cent, its largest single-day gain since November, although trading volume was only moderate.

Meanwhile, Dubai’s National Central Cooling Co (Tabreed) surged its 15pc daily limit to 2.12 dirhams after French power and gas group Engie agreed to buy a 40pc stake for 2.8 billion dirhams ($763 million) from Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala.

Mubadala will convert its mandatory convertible bonds

into shares, with 1.086bn shares to be transferred to Engie at about 2.62 dirhams

each. The Abu Dhabi fund will keep 42pc after the deal has been approved by

regulators.DSI expects to complete

a plan to reduce its capital by 75pc by the end of the third quarter, deferring the process by one month, its chief executive said.

The Dubai index added 0.4pc. Qatar lost 1.3pc with commodity-linked companies some of the worst performers as Brent oil stayed near its 2017 lows. Drilling rig provider Gulf International Services declined 4.0pc and petrochemical maker Industries Qatar fell 2.7pc.

From “The Jetsons” to “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”, flying cars

have long captured the imagination. While several futuristic projects

are under way in different countries, a Dutch design may be the first one sold and soaring into the skies.

After years of testing, the PAL-V company aims to pip its competitors to the post. It is poised to start production on what they bill as a world first: a three-wheeled gyrocopter-type vehicle which can carry two people and will be certified for use on the roads and in the skies.

“This kind of dream has been around for 100 years now. When the first airplane was invented people already thought ‘How can I make that driveable on the road?’,” chief marketing officer Markus Hess said.

The PAL-V (Personal Air and Land Vehicle) firm, based in Raamsdonksveer in the Netherlands, is aiming to deliver its first flying car to its first customer by the end

of 2018. The lucky owner will need

both a driving licence and a pilot’s licence. But with the keys in hand, the owner will be able to drive to an airfield for the short take-off, and after landing elsewhere drive to the destination in a “door-to-door” experience.

Different versions of a flying car are being developed in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Japan, China and the United States.

But final assembly on the PAL-V will start in October, with the company seeking to be the first to go into commercial production.

‘No falling from sky’ The PAL-V uses normal unleaded petrol for its two 100-horsepower engines, and can fly 400 to 500 kilometres (248 to 310 miles) at an altitude of up to 3,500 metres (11,500 feet).

On the road it has a top speed of around 170 kilometres an hour.

In 2019, the company expects to produce between 50 and 100 vehicles, before ramping up to “quite a few hundred” in 2020.

It won’t be cheap. The first edition, the PAL-V Liberty, costs 499,000 euros ($599,000), while the slightly cheaper PAL-V Liberty Sport, to be made next, has a price tag of 299,000 euros.

PAL-V was founded in 2007 by Robert Dingemanse and pilot John Bakker.

“In the beginning it was, let’s make a gyrocopter d r i v a b l e , ” said Hess.

But the company , w h i c h has some 40 to 50

e m p l o y e e s , realised the weight and length of a gyrocopter’s blades gave the vehicle a high centre of gravity when driving,

especially taking corners. They have designed the car so at the

flick of a button the blades fold

down and gather like a bat’s wings on the top. And they have

incorporated into the

car a 2005 b r e a k t h r o u g h

-- when the Dutch company Carver

invented a tilting system for three-wheelers -- to counter the high centre of gravity and make it roadworthy.

The company insists the PAL-V is not a helicopter, in which the blades are powered by an engine. It is a gyroplane, in which the blades rotate thanks to airflow.

Even if both engines cut out, the blades will still turn, so “even if you go at zero speed it still keeps rotating and you are not going to drop out of the sky,” said Hess.

‘Selling a dream’While he refused to divulge how many orders they have, he said the company “was more than satisfied”.

Clients put down a non-refundable

deposit of 10,000 to 25,000 euros depending on the model. A third option is to put 2,500 euros into an escrow account, which secures them a place in the line.

“In some senses we are selling a dream,” Hess said, standing next to the sleek, black first model developed in 2012 which has already put in “substantial hours” of flying and driving time.

Parts are on order, with the first already in stock. Once built, the vehicle will have to complete at least 150 flying hours, and undergo extensive tests to receive its certification from the Cologne-based European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

Hess defended the hefty price tag. It’s not a lot more than “a super-duper sports car with a few extras,” he said.

“Considering the extra certification standards we have to go through for aviation, and that a super-duper sports car can’t even fly, we think it’s actually a bargain.”

The PAL-V staff know many inventors in other countries also developing flying cars, but remain unconcerned by the competition.

And Hess laughs when asked whether the skies will become too crowded.

People at first “cannot even imagine flying cars. Then suddenly when they start imagining it, they see millions of flying cars in the air.”

That new reality, for the time being, is still a long way off, he said. (AFP)

Tuesday, June 20, 2017 11Ford Motor Co. has increased the power and cut the

weight of two of its largest nameplates -- the F-150 pickup and Expedition SUV -- thanks, in part, to more efficient transmissions and lighter aluminum bodies. The freshened F-150 will feature a new entry-level 3.3-liter V-6 with a six-speed transmission. It will get 290 hp at 6,500 rpm and 265 pounds-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm, the automaker said. Ford is also updating its 2.7-liter EcoBoost, 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 5.0-liter V-8 engines, and is pairing its 10-speed transmission with all three. Since its release late last year, the 10-speed has been available only with the 3.5-liter. (autonews)

Actor Brad Pitt, who is caught up in a battle for custody of

his children with former wife Angelina Jolie, got an early Father’s Day gift by getting to spend time with their six children.

Together, Jolie and Pitt were raising Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Vivienne and Knox.

Jolie filed for divorce last September after two years of marriage and a 12-year relationship. The two then got involved in a custody battle over the children, before reaching a temporary custody agreement that Jolie would have their custody while Pitt would have “therapeutic visitation” with them.

Ahead of Father’s Day, their children spent several hours at Pitt’s house on June 17. They later returned to Jolie’s home, from where they headed out to take a flight to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, reported eonline.com. (IANS)

Singer Amy Lee had to struggle hard to get into the movie songwriting business.

The 35-year-old recently penned the song called “Speak to me” for actress Emilia Clarke’s upcoming thriller “Voice from the Stone”, but it has taken Lee a long time to get her work noticed.

A lot of her work was rejected before, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“I felt like movie song writing was a very hard wall to knock down. I’ve been trying to write music for film for sometime and it’s very difficult. I’ve been trying for a long time. I’ve written for many many a film and the song didn’t get used. But it’s happening more for me now,” Lee told BANG showbiz. (IANS)

Filmmaker Michael Bay says he prefers dirty and sloppy stunts.

He says that the “Mummy” stars including Tom Cruise’ stunts are a bit too polished for his liking.

“We’ve talked but I told him, ‘Tom (Cruise), I know you rehearse your stunts over and over, but I like sloppy stunts.’ So that would be the rub working with us, I wouldn’t let him rehearse as much,” he said.

“I like my stunts to be dirty and messy. With ‘Mission: Impossible’ I understand you need very choreographed stunts...” he added. (IANS)

You might feel a bit restless today. You may want to get the word out to others. Unfortunately, your tongue may be tied and it could be hard for you to express yourself exactly the way you want. Balance is key. You should work to foster harmony among your associates. This is a good time to get out and be social.

If you keep waiting for things to happen, you may wake up one morning and realize that your life has passed and you never did half the things you dreamed of doing. The time to take action is now. Put your plan into effect. You may need to make some compromises, but you will find that, in general, people will follow your lead.

Remind your loved ones how much they mean to you today. Words are especially powerful. Don’t use them lightly. Be thoughtful about how you treat others. Do your best to maintain peace. It isn’t a good idea to hold grudges or carry hatred for anyone. Good manners and a neat appearance are key elements to the day.

Feel free to express your independent attitude today. Break out of any restrictions that might be keeping you from doing what you want to do. Also, make sure you aren’t compromising your own needs for those of others. Things should naturally flow your way, and you should be in a good mood for most of your waking hours.

Have fun today and don’t be so serious about anything. This is a good time to lay low and enjoy the scenery. Go to a movie or see a play. Go to a party and celebrate. Dress up in your most attractive garb and go in for the kill. This is a day to be talkative, lighthearted, and social. Heavy emotional issues will only weigh down the positive mood.

You can do no wrong today. In fact, you can navigate through the cracks without anyone noticing. You may find that you would rather be up on centre stage. This is fine, too, just as long as the choice is yours. Independence is a key theme for you today. You will find that the more you can break free, the better your mood will be.

Have some fun today. It’s time to balance all the work you’ve been doing with a little bit of fun. Yesterday’s honest efforts are turning into today’s rewards. There’s no need to be shy when it comes to receiving what is rightfully yours. Be proud of your accomplishments. If you can’t find someone to take you out to dinner, take yourself out!

The pace will be jumping today and your wit and cheerful words will be welcomed in almost every setting you enter. Do things with others and see what kind of “trouble” you can stir up together. This is a time to get out and be social. Beautiful things and relaxing music are all favoured on a day like this. You can do no wrong by just being your usual, outlandish self!

Today is apt to be favourable for you. You should keep the lines of communication open so you can spread your knowledge to others and receive the important information that is due to come your way. Your energy might come in erratic yet powerful bursts. You should find that your ego and emotions are quite strong.

Many people may have a great deal to say today, but you could find that you’d rather sit and listen. Feel free to do so. A lot of what’s going around is gossip, so you might not want to get involved at all. This is probably a wise move. Keep your nose clean and simply absorb what you hear. Feel free to filter out anything that doesn’t sit right with you.

Don’t be selfish today. This is a time to think about others. Instead of ploughing ahead with a project by yourself, consider enlisting the help of a partner or friend. Things are better accomplished cooperatively, regardless of how badly you may want to do something on your own. The effort put out by a team will produce unexpected results that prove quite favourable.

If you don’t say exactly what you mean today, you might get into trouble. Don’t compromise your values just to maintain the peace. Bali

Four foreign prisoners have tunnelled out of jail on

Indonesia’s tourist island of Bali, including an Australian man who was going to be freed within months, police said yesterday.

The escape is the latest in a spate of audacious prison breaks in country, where last week dozens of inmates swam out of a facility on another island during a flood.

An Australian, Bulgarian, Indian and Malaysian are

missing from the Bali jail, police said, adding they are believed to have fled when Muslim prisoners were performing the dawn prayer.

“It seems that they have escaped through a 50 x 75cm (20 x 30 inch) hole at the prison’s outer wall which have led to their escape,” Bali police spokesman Hengky Widjaja said.

Increased checks in the airport, port and bus terminals are being launched to apprehend the prisoners.

Singapore

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong apologised to

Singaporeans yesterday for a bitter family feud over his late father’s legacy, saying it had damaged the country’s reputation.

Lee and two younger children of revered founding leader Lee Kuan Yew have been attacking each other on Facebook and international media for days as a dispute over the patriarch’s estate became public, a spectacle that has shocked Singaporeans.

“I deeply regret that this dispute has affected Singapore’s reputation and Singaporeans’ confidence in the government,” Lee said in a statement he read in a pre-taped video aired by national broadcaster Mediacorp.

“As your Prime Minister, I apologise to you for this.

“And as the eldest of the siblings, it grieves me to think of the anguish that this would have caused our parents if they were still alive.”

The London Mosque attack was a reminder that terror-ism, extremism and hatred take many forms and our determination to tackle them must be the same, whoever is responsible.”

EU warns of ‘united response’ to cyberattacks

Malaysia said it had found the wreckage of a tanker which sank last week with six crew on board as officials battle to control an oil spill.

The European Union warned yesterday that a cyberat-tack on any one member state could merit a response by all members of the bloc, amid growing fears of hack-ers holding governments to ransom.

Bamako

Mali’s government said yesterday five

suspected jhadists were in custody after an assault on a popular tourist resort near the capital, Bamako, which left two civilians dead.

Four attackers were killed at the scene, Security Minister Salif Traore said, while 36 hostages were freed following the incident at the Kangaba Le Campement resort on Sunday afternoon, the majority of them French and Malian.

Jihadists constantly target domestic and foreign forces in Mali’s troubled north

and centre, but attacks on civilians in and around the capital are much rarer, with the last major incident in November 2015 when gunmen stormed the Radisson Blu hotel.

That attack, which killed 20 people, caused the government to instate a state of emergency which has been in place more or less ever since.

Residents living close to the Kangaba resort had first reported the attack after hearing shots while smoke billowed into the air, with at least one building ablaze, Traore said.

India’s ruling party yesterday named a lawyer

from the lowest Dalit caste as its candidate for president, a move seen as an attempt to reach out to the marginalised community.

Ram Nath Kovind, 71, is likely to take up the largely ceremonial post when the term of Pranab Mukherjee ends next month, becoming the second Dalit to be India’s head of state.

The president is voted in by an electoral college comprised of federal and state lawmakers, and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is thought to have the support it needs to push its candidate through.

“Ram Nath Kovind has always fought for the betterment of the Dalits and

other backward castes,” BJP chief Amit Shah said at a press conference to announce the party’s candidate.

“The BJP ... hopes that a person born in a poor family of low-caste Dalit community will be a consensus candidate for the president’s post.”

Kovind, a two-time parliamentarian and current governor of the eastern state of Bihar, is a lifelong supporter of the Hindu nationalist BJP and a relative unknown in Indian politics.

He has also headed groups that work to improve the conditions of Dalits, previously known as untouchables, who lie at the bottom of India’s deeply entrenched social hierarchy.

If elected, he will be India’s second Dalit president after

K R Narayanan, who served from 1997 to 2002.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that Kovind would “make an exceptional president” and “continue to be a strong voice for the poor, downtrodden and marginalised”.

The opposition, led by the Congress Party, will reportedly meet on Thursday to decide whether to name a separate candidate or support Kovind. But political observers said it could be difficult for rival parties to oppose a Dalit candidate.

India’s prime minister wields most of the executive power, but the president can send back some parliamentary bills for reconsideration and also plays a guiding role in the process of forming governments. (AFP)

Mumbai

An Indian woman gave birth to a baby boy on an

international commercial flight as it flew at 35,000 feet, the airline said yesterday.

The unnamed woman, in her 20s, went into premature labour on Sunday’s Jet Airways flight between Damman in Saudi Arabia and Kochi in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

“The guest delivered a baby boy at 35,000 feet,” Jet Airways said in a statement, adding that a paramedic on board and airline staff helped with the delivery.

The Boeing 737 flight, which had 162 passengers on board, was diverted to Mumbai where the woman and her newborn

were rushed to a hospital near the airport.

An official at Mumbai’s Holy Spirit hospital said that both the mother and baby boy were doing well.

The woman was believed to

have been around 32 weeks pregnant when she gave birth.

Jet Airways said it was the first time a baby had been born on one of its flights and that it had given him free travel for life on the airline.

as deadly forest fire rages

Pedrógão Grande

More than 1,000 firefighters yesterday continued to battle a giant forest fire that swept through

central Portugal at the weekend, killing at least 62 people.

The country was in mourning after the deadliest such disaster in its recent history, with many victims burnt as they were trapped in their cars around the epicentre in Pedrogao Grande.

“Portugal weeps for Pedrogao Grande,” said the I newspaper while mainstream Publico’s headline simply read “Why?”

“The fire has reached a level of human tragedy that we have never seen before,” said a visibly moved Prime Minister Antonio Costa, who announced three days of mourning from Sunday.

Portugal’s national Route 236 was transformed into a road of hell as the ferocious blaze ripped through the wooded countryside.

Although the searing temperatures had dropped slightly yesterday, the fire was still raging, spreading to neighbouring regions of Castelo Branco and Coimbra.

Firefighters were also continuing a grim search for bodies, with Costa warning on Sunday that the death toll could still rise.

The international community has stepped in to help, with Spain, France and Italy sending water-bombing planes. The European Union has also offered help and Greece said it could send firefighters if needed.

“I am shocked and horrified by the many lives claimed by today’s devastating fires,” said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who comes from Portugal.

“The United Nations stands ready to assist in any way possible.” (AFP)

79 people presumed dead in London tower block fireLondon

Seventy-nine people are dead or missing and presumed

dead following a devastating blaze in a London tower block, police said yesterday, as Britain held a minute’s silence for the victims.

“I’m afraid to say there are now 79 people that we believe are either dead or missing and I sadly have to presume are dead,” police commander Stuart Cundy told reporters.

Police had earlier put the toll from Wednesday’s inferno at 58 presumed dead.

He said only five people had been formally identified so far by police. Officers had earlier warned that some

may never be identified due to the condition of their remains.

Cundy said the search

and recovery operation was ongoing in the tower, which was built in 1974 and had received a major refurbishment

that was completed last year. “This is an incredibly

distressing time for families and they have my commitment

that we will do this as quickly as we possibly can,” he said.

Cundy promised an

“exhaustive” criminal investigation into the fire that would also look at the refurbishment.

Images inside show ‘indescribable’ scenesLondon

London police Sunday released images taken

within Grenfell Tower following its devastating fire, as a police chief said conditions inside verged on the “indescribable” and warned the death toll would rise further.

Photos and videos published by the Metropolitan

Police show the gutted wreckage of apartments within the 24-storey tower block after Wednesday’s fire.

With blackened rubble strewn across the floor and exposed pipes, one room is unrecognisable as a home until a bath and sink come into view -- the dividing wall destroyed completely by the fire.

The remnants of an exercise bike, an oven and washing machine point to the lives of residents now shattered by the blaze.

“The conditions due to the fire damage verge on indescribable,” said police commander Stuart Cundy, explaining that a full search of the building will take weeks.

Yoga enthusiasts across the world yesterday

performed various asanas at iconic places in several countries ahead of the third International Yoga Day.

Dressed in white T-shirt and trouser, people stretched themselves in various postures at Yoga events held in the US, Japan, China, Pakistan and other countries.

This year, the United Nations will also issue special stamps commemorating Yoga Day. The UN

postal agency, UN Postal Administration (UNPA) will issue the new special event sheet to commemorate the day that has been marked annually since 2015. The special sheet consists of stamps with images of the sacred Indian sound ‘Om’ and various yogic asanas.

June 21 was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2014. Over 190 countries, including 40 Islamic nations, supported the move to have a special day for yoga.

Following this, the first International Yoga Day was observed across the world on June 21 for the past two years.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi will lead a crowd of over 55,000 people, including students, teachers, yoga practitioners, officials, differently abled, policemen, politicians, ministers and other dignitaries, in Lucknow. Across the world, several countries are gearing up to celebrate the day.

Egypt has several events lined up across the country, with celebrations expanding to Alexandria and Ismailia in addition to Cairo.

China has planned to organise scores of events across the country, which officials say will make it the second biggest celebrations of the day in the world after India. China also backed India’s move in the UN to make June 21 as International Yoga Day, giving a fillip to hundreds of yoga clubs and organisations.

In Japan, the Indian Embassy celebrated the Yoga Day at the Taimei Elementary School in Tokyo.

While the Bahrain Tennis Club members

and guests were enjoying their annual Ramadan and Awarding Ceremony on Sunday night at its premises in Juffair, news filtered through that a former ITF Junior Champion in Bahrain had won the prestigious Aegon Nottingham Open in the United Kingdom.

The player in focus was Osijek born Croatian National Team player Donna Vekic who had just beaten the top seed from Great Britain Johanna Konta 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 in the final, and unseeded herself defeated the fifth and sixth seeds on the way.

This victory for Vekic gave her an all-time best overall ranking of 58 on the women’s circuit.

The story of Vekic goes back to 2009 when as an unseeded player at the age of 13 defeated Egyptian top seed Yasmin Ebada 6-1, 6-2 in the final of the First Zain Bahrain ITF Girl’s Junior Championships

hosted by Bahrain Tennis Club at its premises in Juffair.

During her run to the title she defeated Bahrain’s Marwa Mohammed 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, then fourth seed Sara Serif of Egypt 6-3, 6-1 in the Round of 16, then Australia’s sixth seeded Skye Hopper 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter finals and then Turkey’s Ekin Bahitli 6-3, 6-3.

“I sent a message to Donna wishing her the best in the final and she thanked me for it and

then when she won a further message of congratulations was sent,” said Bahrain Tennis Club General Manager, Hamdi Abdul Jawad.

Abdul Jawad expressed his happiness at her victory, “It is great to know that a junior champion at our courts in Juffair has really made the big time, looking back to the time she won here in Bahrain, it was thought she was a special talent and just as then and now she was unseeded and knocked out two seeds on

the way to the final and then toppled the top seed. It is a proud moment for myself and the club that a player of this talent has graced our courts in the past and is now one of the world’s top women’s players,” concluded Abdul Jawad.

Since her Bahrain success, Vekic has represented Croatia in the Federation Cup and made her debut in 2012 against Bosnia-Herzegovina and has played all ‘Four Grand Slams’ in Australia, France, US and Wimbledon since 2013.

Un d e r - p e r f o r m i n g African giants Al Ahly

of Egypt will reach the CAF Champions League knockout stage for the first time in four seasons if they beat Wydad Casablanca in Morocco Wednesday.

Since winning the elite African competition a record-extending eighth time in 2013 by overcoming Orlando Pirates of South Africa, the Cairo “Red Devils” have fallen on hard times.

They failed to reach the group stage the following two years and a third-place mini-league finish last season spelt an earlier-than-expected end to their campaign.

Ahly coach and former player Hossam el Badry has acknowledged that supporters are growing impatient for another Champions League title and a shot at the FIFA Club World Cup title.

“It is not a secret that our supporters are demanding that we win the Champions League this year,” he told the Egyptian media before leaving for Morocco.

“We want to add a ninth star to our shirts and to play again in the FIFA Club World Cup, where we have not performed to our full potential in past appearances.

“Our ambition is to win every competition we play in. Only trophies are a stake for us -- nothing less,” added the 2012 Champions League-winning coach.

Ahly and Zanaco of Zambia top Group D with seven points after three rounds, 2016 semi-finalists Wydad have three and Coton Sport of Cameroon none.

CAF victories for clubs visiting Morocco are rare, but Ahly edged Wydad 1-0 in Casablanca at the same stage

last year thanks to a Ramy Rabia goal.

Ahly comfortably overcame Wydad 2-0 in Cairo this month thanks to goals from Moamen Zakaria and Nigerian Oluwafemi “Junior” Ajayi.

Zanaco hope Ahly collect maximum points because victory over Coton in northern Cameroon city Garoua would then guarantee the Lusaka outfit a quarter-finals place too.

The Zambians won the first encounter against the 2008 Champions League runners-up 2-1 with Diddy Kitumbo nodding the winning goal five minutes from time.

Esperance of Tunisia are another team one win away from the knockout stage, and that could come at home Wednesday in Group C against title-holders Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.

The two-time African champions are favoured having won 2-1 in Pretoria this month thanks to a brace from in-form Tunisian international Taha Yassine Khenissi.

If Sundowns fail and second-place Saint George of Ethiopia win at V Club of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the defending champions’ chances of survival would greatly diminish.

Leaders Zamalek of Egypt, runners-up to Sundowns last year, visit 2015 beaten finalists USM Alger of Algeria for a Group B top-of-the-table showdown.

Al Hilal of Sudan surprisingly held Group A pacesetters Etoile Sahel in Tunisia and hope sauna-like heat and an intimidating Omdurman cauldron can help them win.

Halle Westfalen

Roger Federer is in action at Halle this week as the Swiss legend puts

the finishing touches to his assault on an eighth Wimbledon title.

Federer, who made his comeback after skipping the entire clay court season at Stuttgart last week, faces Lu Yen-Hsun, Taiwan’s world number 73 on Tuesday.

The ring-rusty 18-time Grand slam winner was knocked out in the first round in Stuttgart to 39-year-old Tommy Haas.

Haas, a former world number two but now down at 302, won 2-6, 7-6 (10/8), 6-4 for just his fourth victory in 17 meetings against his close friend.

It was just the second defeat of 2017 for the 35-year-old Federer, who

claimed the Australian Open for his 18th major in January.

Federer, aiming for a ninth title at Halle, has won all three of his match-ups against Lu.

He turns up in the Westfalen town after recharging his batteries at home in Switzerland. “I’ve got high hopes of playing better here than in Stuttgart last week,” the world number five said, adding that he was “in 100 percent form for the grass season”.

The 35-year-old followed up his Australian Open triumph with wins at Indian Wells and Miami, before taking a two and a half month ‘time-out’ to ensure he was fit and fresh for Wimbledon.

If he gets past Lu, Federer could face Mischa Zverev in the second

round.Zverev’s 20-year-old younger

brother Alexander, German tennis’ latest prodigy and world number 12, opens his tournament against Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi.

Japan’s Kei Nishikori, beaten in the French Open quarter-finals by eventual winner Rafael Nadal, opens against Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

France’s Lucas Pouille arrives in Halle hot foot from his success on the grass at Stuttgart on Sunday where he came from behind to beat Spain’s Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.

The 23-year-old, who reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals last season, plays local hope Jan-Lennard Struff, the German he beat in the first round last week. (AFP)

The league will be held under the patronage of HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, Honourary President of the Bahrain Disabled Sports Federation, from July 24 to August 23. Under the slogan #meeting_of_generations, the league is part of the sports and humanitarian initiatives, organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs in cooperation with the Media Office of Shaikh Khalid.

The meeting will be dedicated to presenting a detailed explanation of the regulations and arbitral matters by Jassim Mahmoud, Director of the referee’s department and he will address several aspects of the regulations or the laws of the game and its recent amendments.

It is noteworthy that the Committee adopted the character of “Nabil” as the name of the character for the league, which was painted by the Bahraini artist Turki Rashid. The character is based on the best player in the category of people with disabilities in the fourth edition of Khalid Bin Hamad Futsal League for Youth Centers, People with Disabilities 2016, as Nabil Al Dossari was chosen as the best player.

The league will be held this year at the Khalifa Sports City Hall. This year’s edition will witness the participation of 36 youth centers out of 36 official centers representing the various cities and villages of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Bayern rubbishes Ronaldo rumours

Berlin

Bayern Munich yesterday rubbished reports

they are set to swoop for world superstar Cristiano Ronaldo -- with the German giants’ chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge insisting it’s pure fantasy.

The 32-year-old Real Madrid star has threatened to leave Spain after running into problems with tax authorities.

Italy’s ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ had speculated that Bayern is set to swoop for Ronaldo so he can link up with the German club’s former Real coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The report by the Italian daily was then carried by several German media outlets.

But Bayern took the unusual step of posting an article on their website to deny the rumours -- alongside the picture of a duck -- titled ‘Duck of the day’. “We are accustomed to intensive speculation on possible arrivals and

d e p a r t u r e s during the

transfer period,” wrote Rummenigge in the statement.

“As a rule, we do not comment on these rumours.

“But now in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, we want to clarify once and for all that this rumour has no basis and must be referred to in the realm of fables.”

German daily Bild speculate Ronaldo would cost Bayern an astronomical 200 million euros ($223.6m) transfer, plus an annual salary of 35 million euros per year. The speculated transfer figure would be more than twice the record 94 million euros Real paid Manchester United for Ronaldo in 2009.

London

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga got back on track

after his French Open nightmare as the

world number 10 eased into the Queen’s Club second round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Adrian M a n n a r i n o yesterday.

Tsonga’s strong

start to his grass-court campaign was the perfect way to erase the painful memory of an embarrassing first round exit against unheralded Argentine Renzo Olivo on the clay at Roland Garros.

That was the first time Tsonga had lost in the opening round of a Grand Slam in 35 appearances, but there was no hangover in the west London sunshine as he brushed aside fellow Frenchman Mannarino in just 66 minutes.

Fifth seeded Tsonga, a Queen’s runner-up in 2011, won the first set after securing the key break at the end

of a marathon sixth game, despite a worrying tumble when he slipped after making a shot behind the baseline.

Shaking off that injury scare, the 32-year-old won seven games in a row and even found time to high-five a ball girl as he avenged his loss to Mannarino in Monte Carlo earlier this year.

Tsonga, who has won titles in Lyon, Marseille and Rotterdam in 2017, will play Gilles Muller or Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round of the Wimbledon warm-up event.

Grigor Dimitrov is another who excels on grass and the Bulgarian

world number 11 cruised into the second round with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Ryan Harrison of the United States.

Dimitrov is the only player other than reigning champion Andy Murray to win the Queen’s title in the last four years and he looks in the mood to push the world number one for the crown this year after crushing Harrison in 54 minutes.

The 26-year-old, who made the Australian Open semi-finals in January, faces French qualifier Julien Benneteau or British wild card James Ward in the last 16.

finished second overall (15 hours 56 minutes 30 seconds in general classification after the fourth and last stage of 158.2 kms of the Tour of Slovenia from Rogaška Slatina to Novo Mesto in Dolenjska region, where they did five laps around the picturesque city.

The race winner was Poland’s Rafal Majka (15:56:23) and third place went to Australian Jack Haig (15:56.40).

Soon after the start, six riders made a breakaway and they held the gap until the final five laps in Novo Mesto. Bahrain Merida Team again controlled the race and Sonny Colbrelli came first in the peloton to Novo Mesto, as planned. Unfortunately, riders from Bahrain Merida split one lap before the finish line, where Colbrelli took the fifth position some 500m to finish. The sprint in downtown Novo Mesto was not easy on the cobblestone cubes and Colbrelli finished third and lost the expected jersey.

Visconti said, “I am happy with my performance even if I didn’t win. The team worked very well and now that I proved my physical condition, I can hardly wait for National Championship with high morale and motivation.”

“We had higher expectations from this Tour at the beginning. We are also sorry and sad to have Kanstantsin Siutsou in the hospital with a bad injury. We wanted to win at least one stage of this race but overall we are satisfied and positively surprised with Giovanni Visconti’s performance, especially on the queen stage, which brought him second place in general classification,” said the Tour of Slovenia Sports Director, Gorazd Štangelj.
