Introduction/Anticipatory Set: Teacher will define and explain why sequencing is important. Students will view video from Disney’s Special Agent Oso

Activity: Teacher will read a real life scenario . Students will act out the scenario in the correct order.Small group activity: Students will put together a picture PowerPoint. The power point will describe how to do something in 3 steps. Students must use time order words to help transition each picture.

Teacher will explain that it is important to know the order or sequence that events take place in a story. It helps you understand what you read.

Teacher will read the first set of story scramble cards. Teacher will explain that the story doesn’t make sense because it’s not in the correct order. This makes it hard to understand what the author is trying to say. We must place these cards in order. This will help us understand the idea that the author is trying to convey.

Materials: PBS kids Arthur Story Scramble Game/ Sequence Task Cards/ Sequence Graphic Organizer/ Microsoft Word Smart Art

Vocabulary: Beginning/End/ First, Next, Last, Before, After, Finally

Intro/Anticipatory Set: Teacher will explain that it is important to know the order or sequence that events take place in a story. It helps you understand what you read. Teacher will also review vocabulary words and allowing students to discuss them.

Teacher Model:

Teacher will pull up Story Scrambler game from: http://pbskids.org/arthur/games/storyscrambler/scramble.html

Teacher will read the first set of story scrambler cards. Teacher will explain that the story does not make sense because the sentences or ideas are not in the correct order. This makes it hard to understand what the author is trying to say. We must place these cards in the correct order. This will help us understand the idea that the author is trying to convey.

Teacher will place the cards in the correct order. Teacher will reread the sentences for understanding. She will then ask the students to explain what the author is trying to tell us.

Guided Practice:

Teacher and students will read the next set of story scrambler cards. Students will discuss where each card should be placed. Students should be allowed to explain their thinking along the way. Teacher can ask questions like: Why would we place this card in the first box instead of the last box? Students need to be able to give and justify their answers.

Teacher will explain that during teacher led small groups, students will continue to explore the skill of sequencing this week.

Small group Instruction

Students will continue to use story scrambler. However, as students are placing the sentences in the correct order, they will write them down in their reading tablet. They must also include time

order words like, first, next, and last. Students should be allowed to discuss their reasoning with each other.

Closing/Assess: Informal- observation of students during whole and small group instruction will allow teacher to see if students understood the day’s lesson.
