Objective:
Students are expected to:
•Use present participle form as an adjective for active
sentences.
•Use past participle form as an adjective for passive
sentences.

What is adjectives:
Adjectives are words that modify nouns.
Look at these examples in the box:

Comparing between:• Present participle:
Use: Present participle is a category that we use to express continuing actions and also we can use it for describing subjects "active actions”.
Form: Verb + ing
ex1: she is watching T.V now.
(Express continuing action)
Ex2: The boy watching the film is my brother.
(Describe a subject)
• Past participle:
Use: Past participle is a category that we use to express completed actions and we can use it for describing object” passive actions
Form: ”. Verb + ed or en as an example
ex1: The book is written.
(Express a completed action)
Ex2: The book written by Ali was amazing
(Describe an object)

Using “ing” form – Present participle
We can use “ing” form to express an adjective for active actions.

So we can say that by adding (ing) to the verb it becomes adjective.
1 - Many adjectives are made from the -ing forms of verbs.
2 - When -ing forms are used as adjectives, the meaning is active.

Using “ed” form – Past participle
We can use “ed” form to express an adjective for passive actions.

1. Here are some tried and tested pieces of advice.
2. It was quite expensive to repair the broken window.
So we can say that by using (past participle) it becomes adjective expressing passive action.
1. These adjectives are made from the past participle forms of verbs.
2. When past participles are used as adjectives, the meaning is passive.

Notice this?
• Do you think all past participle end with “ed” ?
Sure Not!!
We have to save the past participle of irregular verbs to modify.
We use “ed” in regular verbs just
Ex: go – went - gone
