Types of energyEnergy is the ability some objects have to change things around them. Energy produces a change or a transformation. For example, when we leave an object in the sun, after a while we notice that its temperature changes; that transformation is the result of the sun energy.

What is energy? And types of energy

Page 5: Unit 6: The energy

Energy can be:

• Mechanical or kinetic energy

• Light energy

• Sound energy

• Electrical energy

• Thermal energy

• Chemical energy

• Nuclear energy

Page 6: Unit 6: The energy

• Mechanical or kinetic energy. Objects moving have this kind of energy. For example, a car riding.

Page 7: Unit 6: The energy

• Light energy. This is the energy of the objects that give light, like the sun or the light bulbs.

Page 8: Unit 6: The energy

• Sound energy. It is generated by the objects that give sound, like the musical instruments.

Page 9: Unit 6: The energy

• Electrical energy. It is the energy used by electrical objects, such as mixer or a computer.

Page 10: Unit 6: The energy

• Thermal energy. It’s the energy that emerges from an object as heat, for example from a stove.

Page 11: Unit 6: The energy

• Chemical energy. It is the energy given by food, batteries or fuel.

Page 12: Unit 6: The energy

• Nuclear energy. It is the energy given by chemical elements such as uranium and plutonium.

Energy transforms One type of energy can transform into a different type of

energy. For instance, when we turn a toaster on, the electrical energy transforms into thermal energy; or our bodies transform chemical energy from food into mechanical energy to move.

Some of these changes of energy are very simple. For example it is very easy to transform kinetic into sound energy when we clap our hands, but it is more difficult to transform sound energy into movement.

Page 14: Unit 6: The energy

ElectricityElectricity comes from other types of

energy existing in the nature, such as the kinetic energy of moving water and wind, or the chemical energy of coal.

Page 15: Unit 6: The energy

Electricity is very useful.• We can transport it easily through wires in power

lines.• It transforms in other types of energy, for

example, into light energy through a light bulb, or in thermal energy trough a heater.

ACTIVITIES

• Name things that use electricity• Choose the correct words:

There are different types of energy. Mechanical energy is related to static/moving objects. Light/Sound energy comes from the sun. Musical instruments emit chemical/sound energy. Fire gives thermal/ electrical energy. Food and fuel/wind generate chemical energy. Chemical elements like uranium or water/plutonium generate nuclear energy.

• Match the words to the pictures.Electrical energy sound energy chemical energy
