The certificates and documents required to be carried on board ships certify that the ship comply with the requirements of the regulations for classification, construction, machinery and equipment.

They comply with the provisions of international conventions concerning safety of life at sea (SOLAS), tonnage (Tonnage Convention), prevention of pollution (MARPOL) etc..

The Certificate of Registry

The Certificate of Class is issued by classification society.
The required standards are ensured by the surveys of classification society.

Tonnage Certificate states the vessel's principal dimensions, particulars of her tonnage.
It is for ships of 24 m in length and above, the gross and net tonnage of which have been determined in accordance with the International Tonnage Convention (1969).
The validity of this document is unlimited providing that there are no alterations in structure

An International Load Line Certificate points out that the freeboards have been assigned and load lines have been marked in accordance with the International Convention on Load Lines (1966).
It is valid for 5 years.

An International Load Line Exemption Certificate shall be issued to any ship to which an exemption has been granted in accordance with LL Convention.

Intact Stability Booklet; all ships of 24 m in length and above shall be inclined on completion and the elements of their stability determined.
The master shall be supplied with a Stability Booklet.

Minimum Safe Manning Certificate certifies that the vessel is considered to be safely manned and carries the numbers and grades of personnel required.

An Exemption Certificate is issued only when a ship doesn't comply with certain requirements of the SOLAS Convention.

Certificates for Master, Officers or Ratings shall meet the requirements for service, age, medical fitness, training, qualifications and examinations in accordance with the provisions of the STCW Code (1978).

An International Oil Pollution Prevention Certificate (IOPP) is issued under the provisions of the MARPOL to any tanker of 150 GT and above and any other ships of 400 GT and above. It is valid for not more than 5 years.

Oil Record Book is issued under MARPOL to any tanker of 150 GT and above and every ship of 400 GT and above.

Damage Control Plans and Booklet; there shall be plans showing for each deck and hold the boundaries of watertight compartments, openings, positions of control units and the arrangements for the correction of any list due to flooding.

A crew List is a document where the master enters the names, nationality, and the qualification of crew members;
ship’s declaration list, passenger list (for cargo ships), ship’s store list which are declared by
the master to the port authorities in accordance with FAL Convention.

FOR PASSENGER SHIPS
In addition to the certificates and documents mentioned above, passenger ships must carry the certificates and documents below:
A Passenger Ship Safety Certificate shows that a ship complies with the provisions of the SOLAS Convention.
It is valid not more than 12 months.

An Exemption Certificate is issued when an exemption is granted to a ship in accordance with the provisions of SOLAS 1974.
Special Trade Passenger Ship Certificate is issued to any special trade passenger ship under the provisions of the Special Trade Passenger Ships Agreement (1971).
Search and Rescue Cooperation Plan; passenger ships shall have on board a plan for cooperation with appropriate search and rescue services in an event of emergency.

FOR CARGO SHIPS
In addition to the certificates and documents listed above, cargo ships must carry the certificates and documents below:
A Cargo Ship Safety Construction Certificate certifies that a ship's hull, machinery and equipment condition has been surveyed in accordance with the provisions of the SOLAS Convention.
It is valid for 5 years.

A Cargo Ship Safety Equipment Certificate covers the inspection of all life-saving appliances and proves that the ship complies with the requirements of the conventions.
It remains in force for 2 years.

A Cargo Ship Safety Radio Certificate shows the compliance of radio equipment and it is valid for one year.
